My life leading to hysterectomy – Lucy ’ s story
So I’ve decided to write about my ‘journey’….. I hate how that sounds!!….OK I’ll call it my experiences. Now I’m happy I’ve renamed it my ‘experiences’ I can start this. I am 38 years old, 23 years ago I was told I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). This was following 3 years of erratic, heavy, painful, periods. I was prescribed the combination pill to regulate my cycle and told if I wanted babies I’d likely need fertility treatment. Fast forward a couple of years…… I was still suffering heavy painful periods, only now they were regular! I made the decision to stop t...

Proof opiates are useful for chronic back pain 'lacking'
Conclusion This systematic review found no evidence that opioids provide a meaningful effect on chronic non-specific lower back pain. Opioids are often used as a last resort for people who have not responded to other painkillers. But these results found opioids gave only half the size of the effect that would be needed to make a real difference – about a 10-point score difference, rather than 20. On the whole, the body of evidence was high quality. A large number of trials where identified, and most were multi-centre trials with good sample sizes carried out in the US, Canada, Australia and Europe. This means the find...

Is there a “best” pain reliever for osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis (OA) affects tens of millions of Americans and is a leading cause of disability and reduced quality of life across the globe. Other than joint replacement surgery, there is no known “cure” for OA, and most treatments focus on relief of symptoms such as pain. Often, the first step is non-medication-based approaches such as physical therapy, exercise, and weight loss. Most patients, however, will eventually use pain relievers such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Other kinds of medication, such as opioids, have also been tested as treatments for OA, and there is ongoing debate about what ...

Cure: A Journey Into the Science of Mind Over Body review – can illness be ‘all in your head’?
From placebos and ‘kissing it better’ to hypnosis and Lourdes – a level-headed look at alternatives to prescription drugsThere are certain kinds of illnesses that seem to cause great distress to doctors; and there are certain kinds of patients that medicine seems almost incapable of helping. It can seem to some people that doctors are almost hostile to them. We often read in illness memoirs of doctors who have been dismissive, and patients being told: “it’s all in your head”, “you’re imagining it”, “your symptoms aren’t real” (whatever that means).I have in mind a patient I saw last Monday morning. ...

Psychiatric Medicines Are Not All Good or All Bad
To take or not to take psychiatric medicine? That is the question. Far too many people answer yes and take meds they don't really need for problems that would get better just with the passage of time and/or brief counseling. More than 20 percent of Americans are on at least one psychotropic drug (sometimes several), too often not for real mental disorders, but for transient emotional distress or for the demoralization that comes from difficult life circumstances. Meds that are very helpful for clear-cut psychiatric disorders usually do more harm than good when used for the everyday difficulties that life throws at us. ...

Study: Florida's Crackdown On 'Pill Mills' Is Working
State officials have been cracking down on Florida's "pill mills" over the past five year to prevent pain clinics from dispensing large quantities of prescription opioids to residents without following proper protocol–and their efforts seem to be paying off. Drug overdose deaths in the United States skyrocketed to 47,000 in 2014, mainly due to opioid painkillers and heroin, according to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). There were 18,893 deaths involving prescription opioids in the country in 2014, up 16% from 2013. There were 10,574 heroin-related deaths in 20...
