Clinical Application of Tonsillectomy with Preservation of Capsule and Support Tissue
CONCLUSION: Tonsillectomy, preserving the tonsillar capsule and scaffold tissue followed by punctate suturing, offered several advantages: it resulted in less intraoperative blood loss and postoperative pain. Patients could resume a normal diet 6 hours after the surgery without an increased risk of complications. Moreover, it significantly reduced the risk of postoperative bleeding.PMID:38466063 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Metabolomic profiling of pediatric post-tonsillectomy pain: A  proof-of-concept study
CONCLUSION: This study identified novel candidate biomarker panels that effectively differentiated varying severity of post-tonsillectomy pain. Further research is needed to validate these data and to explore their clinical implications for personalized pain management in children undergoing painful surgeries.PMID:38466029 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14876 (Source: Paediatric Anaesthesia)

The utility and accuracy of ChatGPT in providing post-operative instructions following tonsillectomy: A pilot study
CONCLUSION: Although ChatGPT can provide accurate answers for common patient questions following tonsillectomy, it sometimes provides eloquently written inaccurate information. This may lead to patients using AI-generated medical advice contrary to physician advice. The inaccuracy in pain management answers likely reflects regional practice variability. If trained appropriately, ChatGPT could be an excellent resource for Otolaryngologists and patients to answer questions in the postoperative period. Future research should investigate if Otolaryngologist-trained models can increase the accuracy of responses.PMID:38447265 | ...

Pediatric Ambulatory Surgery: What ’s New, What’s Controversial
This article aims to review recent innovations and trends in ambulatory anesthesia through the lens of the pediatric ambulatory population and strategizes the feasibility of implementation for individual ambulatory sites.Recent FindingsReducing greenhouse gasses via total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) and/or low fresh gas flows (FGF), the expansion of 23-h stays, and increasing prescriptions for GLP-1 agonists are all contemporary issues with relevance to pediatric ambulatory surgery.SummaryPediatric patients present unique challenges for environmental stewardship. It is likely eliminating nitrous oxide and using low flows...

MRSA throat carriage in two healthcare workers
We describe two Norwegian healthcare students with persistent MRSA throat carriage. After several eradication failures, MRSA eradication was successful only after tonsillectomy.INTERPRETATION: Tonsillectomy is not the solution for persistent MRSA throat carriage in healthcare workers. However, their stories illustrate the challenges they faced during repeated eradication attempts. They suffered considerable psychological stress due to the risk of study disruption and limited career options. The impact of laws and strict guidelines for MRSA-colonised healthcare workers, needs to be re-assessed in order to reduce transmissio...
