The relationship between posttonsillectomy bleeding to hemogram and coagulation parameters
ConclusionsAge, high WBC and neutrophil levels were determined as possible risk factors for PTB. Seasonal and gender distribution, aPTT and INR values were similar in the two groups. In order to prevent and predict bleeding, detailed infection investigation should be performed and the risk of bleeding should be considered to increase with increasing age. Superior Parathyroid Masquerading as Retropharyngeal Lymph Node
We report a case of incidentally discovered parathyroid gland located in the retropharyngeal space at the level of the oropharynx.Case PresentationThe patient in this report was a 60-year-old female with squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil T2N0M0 with MRI showing a hyperintense ovoid structure, medial to the carotids at the level of the oropharynx, corresponding to the location of the lateral group of retropharyngeal lymph nodes. Patient underwent transoral ultrasonic radical tonsillectomy along with a retropharyngeal lymph node dissection by the transcervical route. Postoperative histopathology revealed the retropharyng...

The Median Effective Dose of Dexmedetomidine for the Inhibition of Emergence Delirium in Preschool Children Undergoing Tonsillectomy and/or Adenoidectomy: A Retrospective Dose-response Trial
Dose Response. 2024 Apr 19;22(2):15593258241248919. doi: 10.1177/15593258241248919. eCollection 2024 Apr-Jun.ABSTRACTThe incidence of emergence delirium (ED) is higher in preschool children undergoing tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy. The purpose of this study was to determine the median effective dose (ED50) of dexmedetomidine (DEX) for the inhibition of ED in preschool children by using probit regression analysis. A total of 140 anesthesia records were retrieved and divided into seven groups based on the infusion rate of DEX: .2, .25, .3, .35, .4, .45, and .5 μg·kg-1·h-1. The Pediatric Anesthesia Emergence Delirium ...

Tympanoplasty can be Concurrent with Adenoidectomy. Tube Factor Assessment
AbstractTo assess changes in middle ear pressures following adenotonsillectomies in children, and to evaluate the possibility of performing tympanoplasty at the same surgical time. Prospective study in which tube function was assessed using tympanometry on the first postoperative day and on the seventh postoperative day after adenotonsillectomies. A total of 39 children aged 6.8  ± 2.6 years were evaluated. On the first postoperative day, 79.5% presented with changes in middle ear pressure. On the seventh postoperative day, only 12.8% maintained this change. Tube dysfunction following adenotonsillectomy is transient a...

Depression risk in chronic tonsillitis patients underwent tonsillectomy: a global federated health network analysis
Conclusion: This real-world analysis found tonsillectomy was associated with a 30% higher 5-year depression risk versus matched non-tonsillectomy patients with chronic tonsillitis. Further mechanistic research is needed to clarify the pathophysiologic association between depression and tonsillectomy. Depression is not commonly mentioned in the current post-tonsillectomy care realm; however, the outcome of our study emphasized the possibility of these suffering condition after operation. Attention to psychological impacts following tonsillectomy is warranted to support patient well-being, leading to better management of pos...

Advancing Pediatric Care: The virtualKIDS Experience in Nursing-Led Audio-Visual Clinical Services
Creat Nurs. 2024 Apr 11:10784535241245667. doi: 10.1177/10784535241245667. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, the escalating trend of pediatric patients, particularly non-urgent cases, going to the emergency departments (EDs) in New South Wales, Australia, prompted the establishment of virtualKIDS, a nursing-led telehealth service. This service, initiated in June 2021, operates 24/7 and provides comprehensive care through audio-visual consultations emphasizing a patient-centered approach. Three elements-COVID-19 Outpatient Response Team (CORT), virtualKIDS Acute Review (vKAR), and Virtual Urgent Ca...

Should paediatric tonsillar asymmetry be an indication for tonsillectomy? A single centre experience
CONCLUSION: Clinical size difference is a poor predictor for true tonsil volume difference. We advise that assessment of tonsil size should be performed in conjunction with the examination of gross visual abnormalities and lymphadenopathy to guide clinical decision making.PMID:38603788 | DOI:10.26635/6965.6386 (Source: New Zealand Medical Journal)
