MRSA throat carriage in two healthcare workers
We describe two Norwegian healthcare students with persistent MRSA throat carriage. After several eradication failures, MRSA eradication was successful only after tonsillectomy.INTERPRETATION: Tonsillectomy is not the solution for persistent MRSA throat carriage in healthcare workers. However, their stories illustrate the challenges they faced during repeated eradication attempts. They suffered considerable psychological stress due to the risk of study disruption and limited career options. The impact of laws and strict guidelines for MRSA-colonised healthcare workers, needs to be re-assessed in order to reduce transmissio...

Predictors of Success of Adenoidectomy in the Treatment of Pediatric Chronic Rhinosinusitis
Conclusions: Adenoidectomy is a good first-line surgery for children aged 12 years and younger, especially in the 6 to 12 years group which had a high rate of success with 68% experiencing remission of symptoms after surgery.PMID:38400707 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241232879 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Appraising and highlighting gaps among prophylactic intervention studies for reducing the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting in children: a systematic review
Conclusion Monotherapy pharmacological prophylaxis is more effective than placebo in reducing the incidence of paediatric PONV, with the efficacy increased further by using combination pharmacotherapy. Further research must compare multiple treatment arms of pharmacological and non-pharmacological prophylaxes for PONV to identify the optimal multimodal prophylaxis regimen. Successful Antiviral Treatment for Chronic Adenoiditis Caused by Herpes Virus in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report
CONCLUSIONS Direct visualization of the postnasal space, with a transoral mirror or 120-degree endoscope, prior to adenoidectomy can aid diagnosis. Adenoiditis may be caused by a wide range of organisms, including herpes virus. Active mucopurulent discharge should raise concern for infection by bacteria, fungi, or virus. Previous research on viral infection of the adenoids have been in asymptomatic patients with presumed latent infection and undergoing elective adenoidectomy. To our knowledge, this is the first paper to report on successful treatment with antiviral medication alone.PMID:38366584 | DOI:10.12659/AJCR.942418 (Source: Herpes)

Endoscopic Evaluation after Conventional Adenoid Curettage
Conclusion Endoscopic evaluation of the nasopharynx following conventional adenoid curettage provides important data regarding adenoid remnants, injury to the surgical field or nearby structures, and bleeding points, which aids in the provision of optimal care and in the achievement of a better outcome. Oropharyngeal Stenosis Caused by Significant Scar Hyperplasia Following Tonsillectomy: A Case Report
Ear Nose Throat J. 2024 Feb 15:1455613241233750. doi: 10.1177/01455613241233750. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOropharyngeal stenosis (OPS) is a relatively rare long-term complication of tonsillectomy in children, resulting from the narrowing of the upper aerodigestive tract between the soft palate, pharyngeal sidewalls, and base of the tongue. This is the first reported case of OPS due to significant scar hyperplasia; however, whether it is as prone to recurrence as skin scar hypertrophy remains unknown. In this article, we present the case of a 5-year-old girl who presented to our otolaryngology clinic with sleep snoring...

Surgical Training Using Augmented Reality-Based Optical Head-Mounted Displays: A Pilot Study
In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of a holographic AR-based surgical training in tonsillectomy. Two otolaryngologists, 1 trainee and 1 instructor, performed 5 tonsillectomies using an AR headset (HoloLens 2, Microsoft, USA). The trainee wore the AR headset to share the surgical view through front camera while the instructor remotely accessed the device using the Microsoft Teams program and provided real-time guidance. The AR-based surgical training offered several advantages, including direct real-time guidance for the trainee and clear instructions without disturbing the surgical process. However, there were a...

Pediatric chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionsPCRS is very common in children causing poor QOL for these children. Medical management remains the main stay of treatment with attention to management of co-morbidities that may contribute to the disease severity. Making the correct diagnosis will help with the choice of surgical intervention if medical management fails. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Spontaneous Oropharyngeal Bleeding Caused by Lingual Artery Pseudo-Aneurysm
Ear Nose Throat J. 2024 Feb 6:1455613231226045. doi: 10.1177/01455613231226045. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSpontaneous oropharyngeal bleeding is an uncommon but serious medical emergency mainly caused by accidental trauma or post-tonsillectomy. In extremely rare cases, it can be attributed to arterial pseudoaneurysm (PA) of head and neck vessels. The authors present the case of a young female patient presenting with recurring spontaneous oropharyngeal bleeding who was found to have a lingual artery PA on angiography. Due to the active nature of the hemorrhage and extensive blood loss, embolization of the tonsillar branc...
