TheE/Z isomer ratio of lycopene in foods and effect of heating with edible oils and fats on isomerization of (all ‐E)‐lycopene
This study clarified the foods richly containing Z‐isomers of lycopene and demonstrated thermal Z‐isomerization of (all‐E)‐lycopene contained in tomato puree with edible oils and fats. These findings will contribute to effective intake of lycopene and the development of facile isomerization of (all‐E)‐lycopene to Z‐isomers in the fields of food, drink, and dietary supplement manufacturing, as well as for daily cooking at home. Prepartum maternal diets supplemented with oilseeds alter the fatty acid profile in bovine neonatal plasma possibly through reduced placental expression of fatty acid transporter protein 4 and fatty acid translocase.
Abstract In the present study, we determined the effects of maternal dietary fat and the type of fat on plasma fatty acids and the expression of placental fatty acid transporter genes. In Experiment 1, Holstein cows in the last 35 days of gestation received diets containing sunflower seed (n=8; high in linoleic acid (LA)), canola seed (n=7; high in oleic acid (OLA)) or no oilseed (n=7; control). Fatty acids were quantified in dam and neonate plasma at calving. In Experiment 2, placental cotyledons were collected (LA: n=4; OLA: n=4; control: n=5) to quantify gene expression. Maternal long-chain polyunsatura...

The effect of grain supplementation on alpaca (Vicugna pacos) production and meat quality
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of grain supplementation on alpaca production and meat quality, from animals raised under a pasture based system in Australia. A total of 56 castrated male alpacas were randomly assigned to one of eight groups (n=7 per group). The eight groups represented two nutritional treatments (pasture-only or pasture+grain supplementation), with each treatment having four replicates. Supplemented animals were incrementally introduced to the ration over a two week period and fed a total grain ration (calculated on 300g/animal/day fed on a paddock basis to reflect commercial feed...

Pros and cons of the supplementation with oilseed enriched concentrates on milk fatty acid profile of dairy sheep grazing Mediterranean pastures
Publication date: Available online 1 December 2016 Source:Small Ruminant Research Author(s): Andrea Cabiddu, Margherita Addis, Myriam Fiori, Simona Spada, Mauro Decandia, Giovanni Molle The aim of this research was to study the effects of dietary supplementation on the composition and fatty acid (FA) profile of milk from grazing dairy sheep. Forty-eight lactating Sarda ewes were randomly allocated to four homogeneous groups: PAS – control group grazing for 22h/d without supplementation; NFS – group supplemented with a cereal based concentrate; SLNA – group supplemented with a concentrate enriched with sunflow...

Methylamine-modified graphene-based solid phase extraction combined with UPLC-MS/MS for the analysis of neonicotinoid insecticides in sunflower seeds.
Abstract In this paper, methylamine modified graphene (CH3NH-G) was synthesized and used as solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent to cleanup the acetonitrile extract of sunflower seeds for the determination of neonicotinoid insecticides by UPLC-MS/MS. The effects of the type of extraction solvent, pH, the amount of CH3NH-G sorbent as well as the type and volume of eluent on the extraction efficiency were evaluated. Good linearity was obtained for the analytes with coefficient of determination (R(2)) in the range of 0.9986-0.9998. LOD (S/N=3) and LOQ (S/N=10) were below 6 and 20ngkg(-1), respectively. Method...

Movement deficits and neuronal loss in basal ganglia in TRPC1 deficient mice.
In this study, we reported that TRPC1 deficiency caused movement disorder as measured by swimming test, modified open field test and sunflower seeds eating test. Immunofluorescent staining showed significant loss of both NeuN-positive cells and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) -positive cells in the caudate putamen (CPu), the external globus pallidus (GPe), and the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) in 5-month-old TRPC1 knockout mice (TRPC1-/-) compared to the wild type (WT) mice. TUNEL staining further revealed that TUNEL-positive cells were significantly increased in the CPu, GPe, and SNr of TRPC1-/- mice. Taken together, t...

In vitro mutagenicity assay (Ames test) and phytochemical characterization of seeds oil of Helianthus annuus Linn é (sunflower)
The objective of this research was to investigate the genotoxic potential of the oil of H. annuus L. (sunflower) seeds via the Ames test as well as its oxidative properties and lipid composition. The pre-incubation method, system metabolic activation (S9 fraction) and five S. typhimurium strains (TA97, TA98, TA100, TA1535 and TA102) were employed for the Ames test. The oxidative stability and fatty acid composition were analyzed by standard methods and gas chromatography. A revertant analysis showed no significant differences between the treatment doses (10–200μl/plate) and the negative controls, regardless of S9+ and S...
