Cost-minimisation analysis of oritavancin for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections from a United Kingdom perspective.
Conclusion: Oritavancin, used to support ED, is associated with lower costs compared with dalbavancin and reduced treatment duration relative to all comparators. Its use would support an ED approach in MRSA ABSSSI management. (Source: Current Awareness Service for Health (CASH))

Mobile phones as a vector for Healthcare-Associated Infection: A systematic review.
Conclusions: The use of mobile phones by healthcare workers without proper disinfection may imply a risk for nosocomial infection. A direct relationship however, remains unproven. Healthcare workers are recommended to include proper handling of mobile phones in their ' classic ' hand hygiene routine as proposed by the World Health Organisation. Determination of Virulence Factors and Resistance Profile of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Strains among Different Types of spa, agr, and SCCmec
The objective of this study was to determine virulence factors and resistance profiles of MRSA strains among spa, agr, and SCCmec types. In total, 55 MRSA isolates were collected from clinical specimens. The MRSA isolates were characterized by antimicrobial susceptibility testing, virulence genes, agr typing, spa typing, and SCCmec typing. According to our findings, all MRSA strains were resistant to cefoxitin; 88% and 86.7% of which were resistant to erythromycin and clindamycin, respectively. Type II agr was predominant with 54.54% frequency. Among 27 different spa types, type t030 was most frequently (25.45%). Most MRSA...

High levels of discordant antimicrobial therapy in hospital-acquired bloodstream infections is associated with increased mortality in an intensive care, low antimicrobial resistance setting.
In this study we aimed to investigate proportions of patients that received discordant empirical antimicrobial therapy and its association to mortality. Methods: A retrospective cohort study model was undertaken to outline BSI in an intensive care, single centre, and low antimicrobial resistance prevalence setting. We used descriptive statistics to delineate proportions of patients that received discordant empirical antimicrobial therapy, and a correlation model and a logistic regression model to calculate the association with mortality and predictors of receiving discordant therapy, respectively. Results: From 2014 to 2...

Assessment of the effect of hand dryers used in shopping malls on hand hygiene
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of hand dryers used in the restrooms located on the food court floor s in shopping malls in Turkey on hand hygiene. Hands were washed for at least 20 seconds by following hygienic hand washing procedures of the World Health Organization. Swab samples were taken from the wet hands after hand washing, then from the dry hands, which were dried under the hand dryers and from the air blowing part of the hand dryers. Samples were cultured on agar plates that were directly exposed to the air-blowing part of the hand dryers. It was found that total coliform bacteria were 0.000 col...

Answering the Challenges Posed by Antimicrobial Resistance
We are failing to take antimicrobial resistance seriously, perhaps because it is not glamorous and relatable. Credit: Bigstock.By External SourceSep 21 2022 (IPS) Staphylococcus aureus is the source of a skin infection that can turn deadly if drug resistant. Estimates regarding the most common resistant variation, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), exceed 100,000 deaths globally in 2019. But up until recently, we did not have a solid grasp on how much of a problem MRSA—or any other antimicrobial resistant pathogen—was in Africa. It turns out, after testing 187,000 samples from 14 countries for antibiot...
