Structural adverse childhood experiences associated with suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and repetitive nonsuicidal self-injury among racially and ethnically minoritized youth
CONCLUSION: Reducing structural ACEs may reduce SI, SA, and repetitive NSSI among ethnoracially minoritized youth populations. Disaggregating diverse youth groups revealed variations in these outcomes that remain hidden when subpopulations are aggregated.PMID:38651757 | DOI:10.1111/sltb.13084 (Source: Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior)

Vaccine coverage among children born to immigrant parents in Norway, 2000-2020
This study examines pertussis and measles vaccination coverage among six immigrant groups in Norway. These vaccines are normally administered as part of different combination vaccines and their coverage rate indicate the national vaccination coverage against a range of additional infections.METHODS: Data from the Norwegian National Population Register were linked at individual level with vaccination data from the Norwegian Immunisation Registry. The final sample consisted of 53,052 children born during 2000-2018 in Norway to parents who were born in Iraq, Lithuania, Pakistan, Poland, Somalia, or Vietnam. Vaccination covera...

Treatment of resistant Paecilomyces lilacinus keratitis with topical voriconazole and oral itraconazole: a rare case report from Somalia
CONCLUSION: For the treatment of Paecilomyces lilacinus keratitis that is unresponsive to conventional antifungal medications, voriconazole may be helpful. Early organism detection and the appropriate therapy are necessary for the management of keratitis.PMID:38576982 | PMC:PMC10990336 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001925 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

The Association Between Perceived Discrimination, Age and Proportion of Lifetime in the United States Among Somali Immigrants: A Cross-Sectional Analysis
We examined whether age or proportion of lifetime in the United States was associated with perceived discrimination among Somali immigrants. Guided by Intersectionality, we described a secondary analysis of Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS) survey data from theHealthy Immigrant Community study. Younger participants (  ≤40 years) experienced more discrimination than older participants ( >40 years). Higher education, being male, and earning $20,000-$39,999 was associated with more perceived discrimination. These findings suggest that Somali immigrants who are younger, more formally educated, male, and/or earn $20,...

Spatial variation and associated factors of inadequate counselling regarding pregnancy danger signs during antenatal care visits among pregnant women in Ethiopia: a Geographically Weighted Regression Model
Conclusion Inadequate counselling service regarding pregnancy danger signs in Ethiopia varies across regions and there exists within country inequality in the service provision and utilisation. Prioritisation and extra efforts should be made by concerned actors for those underprivileged areas and communities (as shown in the maps), and health extension workers, as they are found in the study. Knowledge-attitude and practice of Anthrax and brucellosis: Implications for zoonotic disease surveillance and control in pastoral communities of Afar and Somali region, Ethiopia
ConclusionOur study revealed significant under-reporting of Anthrax and brucellosis, and weak prevention and response in humans, mostly associated with poor disease knowledge of healthcare providers. Ability to respond to animal outbreaks was limited by vaccine and drugs availability, timely vaccine administration and the mobility of pastoralists. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Participatory epidemiology on major camel calf health and management problems in pastoral and semi-pastoral zones of Somali region, Ethiopia
by Hassan Abdi Hussein, Abdifetah Mohamed, Juhar Mohamed Ahmed A cross-sectional study was conducted from May 2017 to March 2019. A participatory epidemiological appraisal was used to gain a rapid overview of the range of camel calf health problems and traditional management, a measure of the importance that people place on each of them, and to identify and p rioritize economically important diseases in target zones. The most important constraints to camel production were identified to be the widespread prevalence of diseases such as camelpox, contagious ecthyma, calf scour, ticks, and nonspecific pneumonia; poor manageme...

Genetic Factors and MicroRNAs in the Development of Gallbladder Cancer: The Prospective Clinical Targets
Curr Drug Targets. 2024 Mar 27. doi: 10.2174/0113894501182288240319074330. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGallbladder cancer (GBC) is an uncommon condition in which malignant (cancer) cells are detected in gallbladder tissue. Cancer is often triggered when normal cells turn malignant and begin to spread. Cancer can also be caused by genetic anomalies that result in uncontrolled cell proliferation and tumor development. MicroRNAs (also known as miRNAs or miRs) are a group of small, endogenous, non-coding RNAs of 19-23 nucleotides in length, which play a key role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. These miRNAs serve as ...
