Independent Contractor Practice...
Any thoughts, or experience, with an independent contractor model of practice within a hospital system? I've been offered a position within a hospital to set up a pain program using their space, staff and equipment, but I remain private practice and I only bill professional fees. Overhead would be malpractice, health insurance, and my own biller. Seems like a fairly low overhead way of developing a practice, vs. totally solo-office based? Any experiences, pros, cons? Thank you! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What info is needed for buying a practice?
I was approached by a a doctor who wants to sell his Solo practice. He wishes to work for a few more years full time (4.5 days) and then work just s couple days a week in future years. He owns the building but isn't selling and will rent it to me. He had an appraisal and that person give him this formula: He will take the last 3 years of income, average them, and I'd pay 40% of that number. This will instantly make me a 40% owner in the practice and I'd get 40% of the income (of both... What info is needed for buying a practice? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Part time income?
I'm a PGY-2 and while I still respect the importance of good psychiatric care I don't feel the passion for the field I did as a student. Already starting to daydream about going part time after residency. I'm fortunate that I don't have a big debt burden and am wondering about what kind of earnings I could expect working about 3 days per week in a private practice (group or solo) or CMHC. Can anybody offer insight there? I plan to work hard and serve my patients well while I'm at work, but... Part time income? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Private practice salary offer...is it fair?
I recently was offered an associate position from a solo practitioner in a local suburb far from the city. The base salary is $70,000, with bonus of 10% after making 3x base. This practitioner will pay for CME, malpractice, professional membership fees. No health insurance. 2 weeks sick/vacay. Practice is very busy, practitioner averages ~45 pts/day and there are nearby hospitals with very few podiatrists taking call, thus growth potential can be very fast and high. There's also option to... Private practice salary offer...is it fair? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Theoretical new practice
Out of curiosity, if one were to graduate from fellowship today and go to open their own practice with the mission to ethically treat patients with a combination of interventional and conservative techniques and medications, what would their day-to-day look like? Obviously they'd have to borrow a sizable chunk of money, maybe they'd prescribe some opioids, maybe they wouldn't. Just sort of curious what the life of a new solo practicioner would look like. What sort of challenges would need to... Theoretical new practice (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Good reads on how to run a practice
Does anyone here have any books, articles or educational resources they'd recommend on how to best run an efficient practice? I don't mean the part that I do in the office, I mean how to best utilize, manage and train staff, how to manage a budget, etc. I'm curious both about dealing with a job (large hospital, locums, HMO) and an environment that you really own (solo practice, partner in a group). Starting in private practice
Hey guys So recently a lot of pain docs have been telling me their biggest regret was not starting private practice (solo or one other partner) earlier. Honestly this seems super daunting and all I Know is academia. I like the idea of solo or a small private practice a lot but am scared to take a huge loan and I get tired thinking of all the business aspects that I'd have to learn. Also I like the idea of having a safety net after fellowship and colleagues I can bounce ideas and... Starting in private practice (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Private GYN Walk-In Clinic
Previously, I posted a question on different career options in OB/GYN, that allowed one to opt out of OB. My question was, in part, motivated by my experiences working as receptionist for a solo gynecologist who dropped OB as her patients aged. Recently, we were discussing patients who insisted on needing immediate appointments, even if their problems had persisted for multiple weeks or cycles. Our conversation piqued my interest in different practice models. Are there urgent... Private GYN Walk-In Clinic (Source: Student Doctor Network)

So much for gloomy career prospects?
Interesting article from Doximity showed up in my mailbox (link here). Essentially, it shows that the job market and salaries for physicians are actually on the rise despite all the gloom and doom that seems to surround the field. What stuck out most to me, especially since they counter many of the common talking points, were that: - Starting salaries for primary care fields and specialists on the rise - Solo practices appear... Major flaw in 2010 study showing independent CRNA practice is safe
This study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20679649 They basically gathered data from medicare claims, and assumed that QZ billing was independent practice, and compared that to MD only as well as care team model. They analyzed mortality and complications rate and reported no difference in solo CRNA vs care team vs solo MD. This is one of the principal paper... Is private practice still a realistic option for new graduates?
I understand, the billing/coding needs to be precise in order to make this happen, but with guidelines becoming more stringent how realistic is it to still come out of residency and open up a practice (solo or group) or buy into a partnership/take over an existing one and still make a decent living ~200k in mid-sized area population.
