Are the 500K+ days in derm over...
Pardon my grave and innate illness of gunneria, but in all seriousness, as you resident studs continue to evaluate your future after residency and/or converse with your fellow peer practicioners, how is the income outlook in derm? I suppose in light of the new health care reform, we will start to see new trends (i.e.- closing down of the solo practicioner era in favor of a multi-specialist approach) that I was just curious as to whether or not that goldmine 500k earning potential was still... How do you deal with the paperwork in family medicine/primary care
Hi guys, I am a 3rd year med student who really likes outpatient medicine, and is highly considering family medicine. What gets me down is hearing the huge amount of paperwork that is somehow more unique to primary care. However, there may be hope as I hear conflicting things on the amount of bureaucracy/paperwork/pre-authorizations/ traditional primary care jobs have (not DPC, solo practice, concierge medicine) on this thread. Some have mentioned that they only spend 30 mins after the... How do you deal with the paperwork in family medicine/primary care (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How a doctor makes money?
Going to try something new here Based on recent threads about salaries, I think we should start a thread on a topic that is really important but is often never taught in medical school and/or residency - the business aspect of medicine. So lets start with this scenario and question, have other members answer, and see if we can make this educational and informative. Feel free to answer, and ask questions. (ie socratic method) So topic 1: You are a solo practitioner, in your own... How a doctor makes money? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Private Office Location
Skip to the bolded portion if you're in a hurry. I'm looking for opinions regarding the location of a solo private practice. I graduated from an upper level residency program in 2017. Since that time I have been spinning my wheels as an associate working for straight percentage with an older pod in a declining practice. (Same 'ol story...things haven't been anywhere near what I was told to expect). I haven't left my current position yet. However, I have already walked through a few... Resources on the Business of Private Practice
Anyone have any good resources (books, blogs, websites, etc) on the business of private practice and the considerations/problems that private practice docs encounter? As someone struggling with decision between private practice vs academics, it would be nice to have all the info about the realities of private practice. Thanks in advance. Edit: sorry just realized there was another recent thread with an excellent blog about solo practice. I'm looking for info about large multispecialty (or... Everyone (PA, RN, NP, PT, PharmD) wants a piece of our pie
I do not understand why MD's are not more protective of their turf like other professionals ( dentists, lawyers, etc) . You don't hear of dental hygienists carrying out root canals or paralegals practicing law. I am not even sure in the near future that I will have a job, given all this encroachment. Sad! "We can now have a situation where a patient is seen solo by a nurse practitioner in the clinic, who then refers the patient to a nurse who performs surgery solo, assisted by operating... Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon - ask me anything
Hello everyone, About me: I am an attending physician specializing in orthopaedic surgery with fellowship in spine surgery. Currently in solo private practice, on staff at a community hospital. I don't have much experience with academic medicine, but I maintain research projects based on my community setting. An employee of mine who is a medical school applicant suggested I create an account on this website to try helping others who are going into the medical field. I'll be answering... APA Salaries in Psychology
Has APA's latest salary report been referenced on SDN yet? http://www.apa.org/workforce/publications/2015-salaries/report.pdf It looks like the median salary for self-employed, non-incorporated psychologists is $120,000. The mean salary for that population is $139,591. Am I misunderstanding what APA means by "self-employed, non-incorporated psychologists"? They are talking about solo practitioners, yes? Obviously, there are many people who go into this field thinking they will... APA Salaries in Psychology (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Solo VS Group Practice
I've worked group PP before and I have some opportunities to do that again. This is a side gig for me though, and when you're not seeing that many people, it really eats into your income to give up 40-60% of your income. My question is about the administrative side of things. What would I have to think about if I go solo? Obviously rent, etc, scheduling, billing....I'm mostly curious about billing and paying taxes since the office staff did that for me at the group practices. I imagine I'd... When your doctor isn't a doctor

I'm really glad that this story combined with the other one in pediatric dentistry are gaining traction in the media...makes me hopeful that it's only a matter of time before they shine a light directly on the prevalence of nurses administering solo anesthetics. why would anyone with a brain go into Primary Care?
So, i have been contemplating Family practice or primary care for a while, but after shadowing a solo DO today, at her family practice. I don't see how it;s a viable choice, i mean we went over the financial side of the equation, she stated having trouble making ends meet. Thus will be switching to a direct primary care model, under-which no insurance company will be involved!! At the end of the day, i couldn't help it but connect the dot between dying podiatry practice and family care. I... why would anyone with a brain go into Primary Care? Future of Midlevels in EM and Implications For Attending Workload
Dreamingthelive's post in the academic vs. community thread about the supervisory role of academic attendings raised some interesting points when dovetailed with the current discussion regarding the soul of EM. Right now the majority of us work at places with an attending/midlevel ratio >1. Anesthesia is frequently cited as a model for future staffing and the ACT model seems to be most commonly 1:4. Given that it's harder for midlevels to make the leap to solo practice in EM due to... Future of Midlevels in EM and Implications For Attending Workload (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Uh, Am I Missing Something?
Just came across an old thread where someone wrote: "I sometimes want to restart my old solo practice, complete with counselor and PT, and make it a cash-only pain practice. No opioids whatsoever. You can come in as many times as you want - and much of the time I would see them and defer to PT or counselor depending on the current problem. I'll do as many injections as you want, within medical standards. PT and counseling will see you as much as they need to. $5K/person per year. Pay the PT... Uh, Am I Missing Something?
