Phenolic content and in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory evaluation of Algerian Ruta graveolens L
Chem Biodivers. 2022 Jul 22. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202200545. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPlants constitute a valuable source of natural antioxidants such as polyphenols and are responsible for exhibiting many biologically significant functions. Ruta species including Ruta chalepensis L. and Ruta graveolens L are widespread species in Algeria and are used as medicinal plants to treat various diseases; however, so far, most of the conducted studies focused on analyzing alkaloids and essential oils mostly on R. chalepensis. The aim of the present research is to investigate the phenolic profile of the aerial parts of Ruta grave...

Ruta graveolens, Peganum harmala, and Citrullus colocynthis methanolic extracts have in vitro protoscolocidal effects and act against bacteria isolated from echinococcal hydatid cyst fluid
In this study, the in vitro activities of methanolic extracts of Ruta graveolens, Peganum harmala aerial parts, and Citrullus colocynthis seeds against protoscolosis and isolated bacterial strains from hydatid cysts were assessed using disc diffusion methods and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC). The chemical composition of three methanolic extracts was studied using LC-MS. After 3 h of exposure to 40 mg/mL R. graveolens extract, a tenfold protoscolocidal effect was seen when compared to the convintional medication (ABZ) for the same duration (P < 0.05). The bacteria listed below were isolated from hydatid cyst flu...

Comparison of Herbal Medicines Used for Women ’s Menstruation Diseases in Different Areas of the World
Conclusion: Women’s menstruation health is directly related to their health condition. Traditional medicines of most ethnic groups have contributed to women’s health care and treatment of gynecological diseases. Practitioners in this field have gained elaborate experience in treatments and medication, and assembled a large number of effective drugs and prescriptions. These experiences have also been inherited and developed by modern clinical application and scientific research. However, the basic research on these drugs is not sufficient, the knowledge of drug use has not been fully popularized, the advantages of drugs...

Tanning Beds, Rue, and Major Burns: An Alarming Association
We present a major burns case report associated with the use of rue (an herb used in Colombia for cultural beliefs) before entering a tanning bed. The patient presented superficial wounds that evolved to deeper ones in a phytophotodermatitis reaction that acted as a chemical burn. The patient presented an estimated percentage of total burn surface area of 85% with second-degree burns. It took two and a half months to apply multiple debridements and bandage coverage before discharge. One month later, the patient presented a dark purplish pigmentation mainly in the lower limbs. Since ancient times, rue has been used as part ...

Chemical constituents of Ruta graveolens L. and their melanogenic effects and action mechanism
In this study, we isolated a new furanocoumarin named Rutagrarin (1) along with 14 known compounds (2-15) from the aerial parts of R. graveolens and elucidated their chemical structures via various spectroscopy. We found that compound 5 promoted melanogenesis and tyrosinase activity in B16 cells. Further investigation on underlying mechanisms revealed that compound 5 activated the transcription of microtia-related transcription factors and promoted the production of melanin in B16 cells via the Akt/GSK-3β/β-catenin pathway. Therefore, we confirmed the traditional efficacy of R. graveolens and speculated that compound 5 c...

Medicinal Plants for Mitigating Pain and Inflammatory-Related Conditions: An Appraisal of Ethnobotanical Uses and Patterns in South Africa
In South Africa, traditional medicine remains the first point of call for a significant proportion of the population seeking primary healthcare needs. This is particularly important for treating common conditions including pain and inflammation which are often associated with many disease conditions. This review focuses on the analysis of the trend and pattern of plants used for mitigating pain and inflammatory-related conditions in South African folk medicine. An extensive search was conducted using various scientific databases and popular ethnobotanical literature focusing on South African ethnobotany. Based on the syste...
