A quick algorithmic review on management of viral infectious diseases in pediatric solid organ transplant recipients
Front Pediatr. 2023 Sep 4;11:1252495. doi: 10.3389/fped.2023.1252495. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTPediatric solid organ transplant is a life-saving procedure for children with end-stage organ failure. Viral infections are a common complication following pediatric solid organ transplantation (SOT), which can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Pediatric solid organ transplant recipients are at an increased risk of viral infections due to their immunosuppressed state. The most commonly encountered viruses include cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), ad...

Chronic Respiratory Diseases as a Risk Factor for Herpes Zoster Infection
CONCLUSIONS: In a standard clinical practice setting, the most prevalent respiratory diseases (asthma, COPD and lung cancer) are related to a higher risk of HZ and PHN. These data are fundamental to assess the potential impact of vaccination in this population.PMID:37734964 | DOI:10.1016/j.arbres.2023.08.010

Countering Mpox Vaccination Disparities in Los Angeles County, California, May-December 2022
Am J Public Health. 2023 Sep 21:e1-e5. doi: 10.2105/AJPH.2023.307409. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProviding equitable access to vaccines for individuals at risk for mpox was critical for containing the 2022 mpox outbreak in Los Angeles County, California. Eligible non-Hispanic Black/African American and Latinx individuals had lower vaccine uptake than did non-Hispanic White individuals, despite having higher mpox case rates. Strategies to address disparities in vaccine uptake included using familiar messaging technology to reach individuals at risk for mpox, using partnerships with community-based organizations to raise ...

Design and Implementation of a National Program to Monitor the Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 IgG Antibodies in England Using Self-Testing: The REACT-2 Study
Am J Public Health. 2023 Sep 21:e1-e9. doi: 10.2105/AJPH.2023.307381. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTData System. The UK Department of Health and Social Care funded the REal-time Assessment of Community Transmission-2 (REACT-2) study to estimate community prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 IgG (immunoglobulin G) antibodies in England. Data Collection/Processing. We obtained random cross-sectional samples of adults from the National Health Service (NHS) patient list (near-universal coverage). We sent participants a lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) self-test, and they reported the result online. Overall, 905 991 tests were performed (28...

Progress Toward Poliomyelitis Eradication - Afghanistan, January 2022-June 2023
This report describes activities and progress toward polio eradication in Afghanistan during January 2022-June 2023. Two WPV1 cases were reported during January-December 2022 and five during January-June 2023 (as of August 26), all from three provinces in the southeast and east regions bordering Pakistan. All five 2023 patients had reportedly received ≥16 oral poliovirus vaccine doses. WPV1 was detected in sewage samples from a site in the south region in May 2023 and one in the north region in June 2023, the first detections since February 2021 and March 2020, respectively. Restrictions on house-to-house vaccination lim...

pH-dependent conformational change within the Lassa virus transmembrane domain elicits efficient membrane fusion
Biochim Biophys Acta Biomembr. 2023 Sep 19:184233. doi: 10.1016/j.bbamem.2023.184233. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLassa virus (LASV) is the most prevalent member of the arenavirus family and the causative agent of Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic fever. Although there are annual outbreaks in West Africa, and recently isolated cases worldwide, there are no current therapeutics or vaccines, which poses LASV as a significant global public health threat. One of the key steps in LASV infection is the delivery of its genetic material by fusing its viral membrane with the host cell membrane. This process is facilitated by signi...

NMR chemical shift prediction and structural elucidation of linker-containing oligo- and polysaccharides using the computer program CASPER
Carbohydr Res. 2023 Sep 4;533:108937. doi: 10.1016/j.carres.2023.108937. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCarbohydrate structures containing alkyl groups as aglycones are useful for investigating enzyme activity and glycan-protein interactions. Moreover, linker-containing oligosaccharides with a spacer group are commonly used to print glycan microarrays or to prepare protein-conjugates as vaccine candidates. The structural accuracy of these synthesized glycans are essential for interpretation of results from biological experiments in which the compounds have been used and NMR spectroscopy can unravel and confirm their structu...

Identification of a novel transcriptional regulator, CorR, for copper stress response in < em > Edwardsiella piscicida < /em >
Appl Environ Microbiol. 2023 Sep 21:e0089923. doi: 10.1128/aem.00899-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCopper plays a vital role in the host-pathogen interface, potentially making components of the bacterial copper response suitable targets for the development of innovative antimicrobial strategies. The anti-copper arsenal of intracellular pathogens has expanded as an adaptation to survive copper toxicity in order to escape intracellular killing by the host immune system. Herein, we employed transposon insertion sequencing to investigate the genetic mechanisms underlying the survival of Edwardsiella piscicida under copper ...
