Gastrointestinal Infection in South African Children under the Age of 5 years: A Mini Review
CONCLUSIONS: This mini review outlines the epidemiology and trends relating to parasitic, viral, and bacterial agents responsible for gastroenteritis in children in South Africa. An increase in sequence-independent diagnostic approaches will improve the identification of pathogens to resolve undiagnosed cases of gastroenteritis. Emerging state and national surveillance systems should focus on improving the identification of gastrointestinal pathogens in children and the development of further vaccines against gastrointestinal pathogens.PMID:37663241 | PMC:PMC10469397 | DOI:10.1155/2023/1906782

Biphasic pleural mesothelioma in a goat
Can Vet J. 2023 Sep;64(9):828-832.ABSTRACTAn 8-year-old Saanen goat doe was seen for inappetence, tachycardia, and intermittent bluish-grey discoloration of the oral mucous membranes. On physical examination, the goat was mildly tachypneic and tachycardic, with reduced sounds auscultated on the left side of the thorax. Euthanasia was elected. Necropsy revealed an infiltrative, multinodular mass within the left thoracic cavity and innumerable small, tan nodules disseminated across the pleura of the lungs, thoracic walls, and diaphragm. Upon histologic examination, the mass was composed of highly pleomorphic, fusiform to pol...

Roaming behavior of the owned domestic cats (Felis catus) with possible roles in the transmission of Opisthorchis viverrini in the endemic area in Khon Kaen, Thailand
Acta Trop. 2023 Sep 1:107013. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2023.107013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the endemic area of the liver fluke (Opisthorchis viverrini) infection, effective control of opisthorchiasis using One Health approaches requires transmission interruption in all hosts in the parasite life cycle. Owned domestic cats (Felis catus) are considered an important species among mammalian reservoirs. Similar to humans, household cats become infected by eating raw, contaminated fish and spread the O. viverrini eggs to the environment by defecation. In rural areas, cat owners usually feed their cats with human food...

Molecular evidence of Bartonella spp. in wild lowland tapirs (Tapirus terrestris), the largest land mammals in Brazil
Comp Immunol Microbiol Infect Dis. 2023 Aug 23;101:102042. doi: 10.1016/j.cimid.2023.102042. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe genus Bartonella (Hyphomicrobiales: Bartonellaceae) encompasses facultative intracellular α-proteobacteria that parasite erythrocytes and endothelial cells from a wide range of vertebrate hosts and can cause disease in animals and humans. Considering the large diversity of vertebrate species that may act as reservoirs and arthropod species that may be associated with Bartonella transmission, the exposure of animals and humans to these microorganisms is likely underestimated. The present study aime...
