Effects of Auditory Training in Older Adults
CONCLUSION: Overall, the study has extended the auditory benefit from the LACE training to the typical aging population in terms of improved communication ability, but the effect of training on auditory abilities did not transfer to gains in cognitive abilities.PMID:37656601 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00621

Viral Chemotaxis of Paramecium Bursaria Altered by Algal Endosymbionts
In this study, we investigated the influence of symbionts on Paramecium bursaria's chemotactic behavior toward chloroviruses. To achieve this, we performed choice experiments using chlorovirus and control candidate attractors (virus stabilization buffer and pond water). We quantified the movement of Paramecia grown with or without algal and viral symbionts toward each attractor. All Paramecia showed some chemotaxis toward viruses, but cells without algae and viruses showed the most movement toward viruses. Thus, the endosymbiotic algae (zoochlorellae) appeared to alter the movement of Paramecia toward chloroviruses, but it...

Pathogen-driven CRISPR screens identify TREX1 as a regulator of DNA self-sensing during influenza virus infection
Cell Host Microbe. 2023 Aug 21:S1931-3128(23)00326-8. doi: 10.1016/j.chom.2023.08.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHost:pathogen interactions dictate the outcome of infection, yet the limitations of current approaches leave large regions of this interface unexplored. Here, we develop a novel fitness-based screen that queries factors important during the middle to late stages of infection. This is achieved by engineering influenza virus to direct the screen by programming dCas9 to modulate host gene expression. Our genome-wide screen for pro-viral factors identifies the cytoplasmic DNA exonuclease TREX1. TREX1 degrades cy...

Zwitterionic mesoporous engineering aids peptide-dependent pattern profiling for identification of different liver diseases
Chem. Commun., 2023, Advance Article DOI: 10.1039/D3CC03231K, CommunicationZixing Xu, Wantong Zhang, Chunhui Deng, Nianrong Sun Zwitterionic mesoporous engineering was developed to assist high-throughput separation and analysis of peptide patterns. Its further coupling with machine learning achieved a precise diagnosis of different liver diseases. To cite this article before page numbers are assigned, use the DOI form of citation above. Cervical cancer screening positivity among women living with HIV in CDC-PEPFAR programs 2018-2022
CONCLUSIONS: These positivity rates are lower than expectations set by the published literature. Further research is needed to determine if these lower rates are attributable to the high level of consistent ART use among these populations, and systematic program monitoring and quality assurance activities are essential to ensure WLHIV have access to the highest possible quality prevention services.PMID:37643419 | DOI:10.1097/QAI.0000000000003286

< em > "We're just winging it < /em > ". Identifying targets for intervention to improve the provision of hearing support for residents living with dementia in long-term care: an interview study with care staff
CONCLUSIONS: Future interventions should include staff Training (on hearing support), Education (on the consequences of unsupported hearing loss), Enablement (dementia-friendly hearing devices), Incentivisation and Modelling (of Hearing Champions) and Environmental Restructuring (flexible audiology appointments to take place within the LTCH). Interventions should be multi-faceted to boost the capabilities, opportunities and motivations of LTCH staff.PMID:37641847 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2023.2245746

Sustained response following BTK inhibitors based treatment in HIV-related primary central nervous system lymphoma: case report
CONCLUSIONS: This report highlights the safety and effectiveness of BTK inhibitors, as well as lenalidomide and PD-1 inhibitor in HIV-related PCNSL patients. Both the new therapeutic approaches and a multidisciplinary team authentically contributed to improved survival outcome among HIV-positive PCNSL patients.PMID:37644480 | DOI:10.1186/s12981-023-00554-8

Zwitterionic mesoporous engineering aids peptide-dependent pattern profiling for identification of different liver diseases
Chem Commun (Camb). 2023 Aug 29. doi: 10.1039/d3cc03231k. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLiver disease remains a global health challenge, with its incidence steadily increasing worldwide. Herein, zwitterionic mesoporous engineering was developed for the identification of different liver diseases including liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Based on this engineering, a total of 2633 m/z signals were observed to be enriched. Notably, three key peptides were identified and showed high accuracy and precision for distinguishing the healthy and disease states, propelling the field of nanomedicine toward genuine personalized medici...
