Predictors of early and late stroke following cardiac surgery.
We examined the rate and predictors of long-term stroke in a cohort of patients who underwent cardiac surgery. METHODS: We obtained linked data for patients who underwent cardiac surgery in the province of Ontario between 1996 and 2006. We analyzed the incidence of stroke and death up to 2 years postoperatively. RESULTS: Of 108 711 patients, 1.8% (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.7%-1.9%) had a stroke perioperatively, and 3.6% (95% CI 3.5%-3.7%) had a stroke within the ensuing 2 years. The strongest predictors of both early and late stroke were advanced age (≥ 65 year; adjusted hazard ratio [HR] for all stroke 1....

Influence of chronic kidney disease and haemodialysis on stroke outcome
CONCLUSION: Despite significant functional and neurological improvements following rehabilitation, stroke patients with underlying CKD had higher average duration of hospital stay, more recurrent hospitalisations and poorer survival outcomes than those without underlying CKD. This could be attributed to the complications associated with CKD rather than stroke. Multidisciplinary community rehabilitation may be an alternative to reduce recurrent hospitalisations and morbidity in this group of patients. PMID: 32241068 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of psoriasis and stroke in end-stage renal disease patients
CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to prior research in the general population, psoriasis in ESRD patients was not associated with the risk of stroke after controlling for various demographic and clinical parameters. Our finding emphasizes the importance of controlling for a variety of factors in population studies examining associations of diseases and risk factors.PMID:37716600 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2023.09.014

Acute kidney injury without need for dialysis, incidence, its impact on long-term stroke survival and progression to chronic kidney disease
Conclusions We found AKI during stroke admission was associated with increased mortality as compared with those without AKI on univariate analysis. AKI without need of renal replacement therapy was also associated with progression to CKD in this cohort. This suggests that patients with AKI need to have their renal function monitored longitudinally for development of CKD.

Hemorrhagic Stroke in Chronic Kidney Disease.
Authors: Jha VK, Sharda V, Mirza SA, Shashibhushan, Bhol KK Abstract Hemorrhagic stroke is leading cause of death in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) population. Uremic patients are susceptible to hemorrhagic complications due to multiple reasons i.e platelet dysfunction, low platelet number, use of heparin during hemodialysis, use of anticoagulants for thromboembolic risk etc. Prevention and treatment of hemorrhagic stroke is complicated in CKD setting and if not managed properly can lead to several fold increased mortality and morbidity rate. In this brief review we will discuss about the magnitude of hemorrhagic str...

Renal transplantation delays major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) in  patients with end-stage renal disease: A nationwide population-based study
Conclusion RT seemed not to reduce the risk of MACEs directly, but it could have dramatically delayed MACEs and stroke episodes in the ESRD patients. Furthermore, a lower mortality rate was observed in the ESRD patients who received RT than in those undergoing chronic dialysis. Further in-depth investigation is necessary to identify other protective factors against MACEs or stroke in ESRD.

Phosphate binders for preventing and treating chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD).
CONCLUSIONS: In studies of adults with CKD G5D treated with dialysis, sevelamer may lower death (all causes) compared to calcium-based binders and incur less treatment-related hypercalcaemia, while we found no clinically important benefits of any phosphate binder on cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke, fracture or coronary artery calcification. The effects of binders on patient-important outcomes compared to placebo are uncertain. In patients with CKD G2 to G5, the effects of sevelamer, lanthanum, and iron-based phosphate binders on cardiovascular, vascular calcification, and bone outcomes compared to place...

HMG CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) for kidney transplant recipients.
CONCLUSIONS: Statins may reduce cardiovascular events in kidney transplant recipients, although treatment effects are imprecise. Statin treatment has uncertain effects on overall mortality, stroke, kidney function, and toxicity outcomes in kidney transplant recipients. Additional studies would improve our confidence in the treatment benefits and harms of statins on cardiovascular events in this clinical setting. PMID: 24470059 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

HMG CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) for people with chronic kidney disease not requiring dialysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Statins consistently lower death and major cardiovascular events by 20% in people with CKD not requiring dialysis. Statin-related effects on stroke and kidney function were found to be uncertain and adverse effects of treatment are incompletely understood. Statins have an important role in primary prevention of cardiovascular events and mortality in people who have CKD. PMID: 24880031 [PubMed - in process]

Prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia and their associations with micro- and macrovascular diseases in patients with diabetes in Taiwan: An analysis of nationwide data for 2000-2009.
CONCLUSION: Although progressively increased prevalence of dyslipidemia and hypertension was observed in patients with diabetes in Taiwan, there was a decrease in the prevalence of stroke and CVD in the past 10 years. Among those with macrovascular diseases, except PVD, there was a trend of decreased prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia during the study period. In patients with microvascular diseases, prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia in patients with eye diseases increased in the past 10 years. More aggressive management of different risk factors is warranted in diabetic patients with various vascular dis...

HMG CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) for people with chronic kidney disease not requiring dialysis.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most frequent cause of death in people with early stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD), for whom the absolute risk of cardiovascular events is similar to people who have existing coronary artery disease. This is an update of a review published in 2009, and includes evidence from 27 new studies (25,068 participants) in addition to the 26 studies (20,324 participants) assessed previously; and excludes three previously included studies (107 participants). This updated review includes 50 studies (45,285 participants); of these 38 (37,274 participants) were met...
