Impact of atrial fibrillation on the risk of ischemic stroke in patients on hemodialysis: BOREAS-HD3 Study
ConclusionPresent analyses using comprehensive adjustment for multiple confounders, including prior history of ischemic stroke, indicated that AF independently increases the risk of new-onset of ischemic stroke by more than twofold in Japanese HD patients.

Higher Mortality Due to Intracerebral Hemorrhage in Dialysis Patients: A Comparison with the General Population in Japan
Abstract Cerebrovascular diseases, including intracerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, and subarachnoid hemorrhage, remain prevalent causes of morbidity and mortality among dialysis patients. Their mortality rate for cerebrovascular diseases is roughly three times higher than that in the general population. However, whether mortality rates for all subtypes of cerebrovascular diseases are equally higher has not been evaluated. The aim of this study was to determine the mortality rate for each stroke subtype, comparing dialysis patients and the general population in Japan. We used mortality data reported by the Japanese...

Outcome of Pericardiectomy for Constrictive Pericarditis in Japan: A Nationwide Outcome Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Pericardiectomy is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Careful consideration should be given to these risk factors in the process of patient selection and perioperative management. PMID: 23791164 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effects of Sleepiness on Survival in Japanese Hemodialysis Patients: J-DOPPS Study
Sleep disorder and poor sleep quality are common in chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients. They have been claimed as a cause of morbidity and mortality. The relationship between the degree of sleepiness and survival has not been studied. We studied the degree of sleepiness in 1,252 adult HD patients (age ≥20 years) recruited into the Dialysis Outcomes Practice Pattern Study in Japan (J-DOPPS III), using the Japanese version of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (JESS) questionnaire. Demographic data were presented for three subgroups: low, intermediate, and high JESS score. Cox proportional hazard regre ssion analysis was perform...

Evaluation of health utility values for diabetic complications, treatment regimens, glycemic control and other subjective symptoms in diabetic patients using the EQ-5D-5L
ConclusionsThe utility decrement related to each diabetic complication varied with its severity and accompanying symptoms. Complex treatment regimens were independently associated with lower utility values. The utility decrement associated with diabetic complication and complex treatment regimens would be overestimated in the analysis without adjustment for glycemic control or other subjective symptoms.

Association of renal arteriosclerosis and hypertension with renal and cardiovascular outcomes in Japanese type 2 diabetic patients with diabetic nephropathy
ConclusionsRenal AS was associated with increasing risks for renal composite events and cardiovascular events in both normal ‐range BP and HT. The risks of renal composite events and cardiovascular events were the highest in both renal AS and HT.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Use of proton pump inhibitors is associated with an increase in adverse cardiovascular events in patients with hemodialysis: Insight from the kids registry.
CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that the use of PPIs in patients with maintenance hemodialysis might increase mortality and cardiovascular events without decreasing the risk of bleeding. Therefore, it should always be analyzed if a patient truly needs PPIs. PMID: 31735546 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Device use for proximal anastomosis on ascending aorta in off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting.
CONCLUSIONS: Clinical safety of Device use in CABG comparable to No-touch for mortality and morbidity. Hemostasis may be a key issue for accomplishing higher level quality control when devices used in proximal anastomosis of CABG. PMID: 33065052 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
