Supplemental Vitamins and Minerals for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Treatment
The objective of this study is to explore the current literature supporting the use oral multivitamins and multi/minerals (OMVMs) for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) treatment and prevention.Recent FindingsData on multivitamins, vitamin C and D, coenzyme Q, calcium, and selenium, has showed no consistent benefit for the prevention of CVD, myocardial infarction, or stroke, nor was there a benefit for all-cause mortality to support their routine supplementation. Folic acid alone and B vitamins with folic acid, B6 and B12, reduce stroke, whereas niacin and antioxidants are associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortalit...

Investigation of Computed-Tomography Based Predictors of Acute Stroke Related to Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: Aortic Wall Plaque Thickness Might be a Predictive Parameter of Stroke.
CONCLUSION: Aortic wall plaque thickness measured by contrast-enhanced CT might be a predictive parameter of strokes that occur within 48 hours after TAVR. PMID: 32005786 [PubMed - in process]

Effects of Blood Pressure Lowering Agents on Cardiovascular Outcomes in Weight Excess Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
ConclusionsIn hypertensive subjects with excess weight, diuretics are more effective for preventing HF and stroke than CCB and ACEI, respectively. CCB are a good first-line choice for prevention of cardiovascular disease, except HF.

Meta-analysis Evaluating Calcium Channel Blockers and the Risk of Peripheral Arterial Disease in Patients with Hypertension
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It affects 8.5 million Americans aged 40 years and above, and 202 million people worldwide.1 Given the significant burden and resource utilization associated with PAD, strategies for preventing the development of PAD could have an enormous impact. Hypertension is an established risk factor for the development of atherosclerotic vascular disease including PAD. Over the past two decades, several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have examined the efficacy of various antihypertensive agents in reducing mortality and other major adverse...

Comparison of First-Line Dual Combination Treatments in Hypertension: Real-World Evidence from Multinational Heterogeneous Cohorts.
CONCLUSIONS: There was no significant difference in mortality among A+C, A+D, and C+D combination treatment in patients without previous CVD. This finding was consistent across multi-national heterogeneous cohorts in real-world practice. PMID: 31642211 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Force Sensing by Piezo Channels in Cardiovascular Health and Disease.
Abstract Mechanical forces are fundamental in cardiovascular biology, and deciphering the mechanisms by which they act remains a testing frontier in cardiovascular research. Here, we raise awareness of 2 recently discovered proteins, Piezo1 and Piezo2, which assemble as transmembrane triskelions to combine exquisite force sensing with regulated calcium influx. There is emerging evidence for their importance in endothelial shear stress sensing and secretion, NO generation, vascular tone, angiogenesis, atherosclerosis, vascular permeability and remodeling, blood pressure regulation, insulin sensitivity, exercise per...

Correlates of the ratio of acceleration time to ejection time in patients with aortic stenosis: An echocardiographic and computed tomography study.
CONCLUSIONS: The AT/ET ratio is related to echocardiographic and CT-AVC indices of AS severity. However, multiple intricate factors beyond the haemodynamic and anatomical severity of AS influence the AT/ET ratio, including LV geometry, function and systolic blood pressure. These findings should be considered when assessing the AT/ET ratio in patients with AS and preserved LVEF. PMID: 31402281 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stroke Risk in Atrial Fibrillation: Beyond the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc Score
AbstractPurpose of ReviewStroke prevention is the cornerstone of atrial fibrillation (AF) management and the anticoagulation decision is currently based on CHA2DS2-VASc risk score. We discuss several novel risk factors besides those included in CHA2DS2-VASc score and alternative models for stroke prediction.Recent FindingsSeveral clinical markers including obstructive sleep apnea and renal failure, laboratory markers like brain natriuretic peptide, imaging criteria including left atrial appendage morphology, spontaneous echo contrast, and coronary artery calcium score may predict stroke in AF patients. Addition of African ...

Mediacalcosis in hemodialysis, predictors and prognosis
ConclusionMediacalcosis is a severe complication since it increases the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in hemodialysis patients, to this end, the individualization of entangled factors involved in its pathophysiology, will slow down or prevent its progression in the future.

Comparison of the measurement of the blood pressure in consultation versus home monitoring for the evaluation of the blood pressure targets in the diabetics of type 2
ConclusionIn our series of diabetics of type 2 patients, the comparison of the measurement of BP in consultation against home monitoring for the assessment of the BP targets, found a better evaluation in the home BP monitoring compared to consultation measurement of BP, with a gain of 17% in systolic BP and 12% in diastolic BP. We detected a masked hypertension in 4% of patients.

Use of Genetic Variants Related to Antihypertensive Drugs to Inform on Efficacy and Side Effects.
CONCLUSIONS: Genetic variants can be used to explore the efficacy and side effects of antihypertensive medications. The identified potential effect of nondihydropyridine CCBs on diverticulosis risk could have clinical implications and warrants further investigation. A Novel Role for the AnxA1-Fpr2/ALX Signaling Axis as a Key Regulator of Platelet Function to Promote Resolution of Inflammation.
Conclusions: AnxA1 affords protection by altering the platelet phenotype in cerebral I/RI from pro-pathogenic to regulatory, and reducing the propensity for platelets to aggregate and cause thrombosis by affecting integrin (αIIbβ3) activation, a previously unknown phenomenon. Thus, our data reveal a novel multi-faceted role for AnxA1 to act both as a therapeutic and a prophylactic drug via its ability to promote endogenous pro-resolving, anti-thrombo-inflammatory circuits in cerebral I/RI. Collectively, these results further advance our knowledge and understanding in the field of platelet and Resolution Biology. PMI...
