Frequency of cardioversions as an additional risk factor for stroke in atrial fibrillation - the FinCV-4 study
CONCLUSIONS: Frequency of CVs for symptomatic AF episodes provides additional information on stroke risk in AF patients with CHA2DS2-VASc score 1.Key messagesThis retrospective study offers a unique opportunity to observe the natural course of AF patients with infrequent episodes of clinical arrhythmia when they were not using OAC (before introduction of CHA2DS2-VASc score).Stroke or systemic embolism rate was very low (0.08 per 100 patient-years) in patients with one CHA2DS2-VASc point who visited the emergency room for cardioversion less than once a year.Frequency of cardioversions can be used for additional risk stratif...

Correlation between dietary selenium intake and stroke in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2018
CONCLUSIONS: Dietary selenium had a negative and non-linear correlation with the risk of stroke in adults. The correlation varied across different population subgroups.KEY MESSAGESDietary selenium had a negative and non-linear correlation with the risk of stroke in adults.Non-linear negative correlation trends were observed in subpopulations of females, age <60 years, poverty-income ratio <2.14, overweight and obesity, hypertension, non-diabetes, and non-anaemia.Dietary selenium intake of approximately 105 μg per day has an optimum effect on stroke.PMID:35594240 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2022.2058079

Tonic non-colonic convulsions-status epilepticus- as the presenting complaint of COVID-19
CONCLUSION: This case represents a rare case in the literature review which can increase the awareness of tonic non-clonic seizures and other neurological manifestations as the presenting symptom of the COVID19.PMID:35573473 | PMC:PMC9088155 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2022.103744

Pre-stroke socioeconomic status predicts upper limb motor recovery after inpatient neurorehabilitation
CONCLUSIONS: Higher pre-stroke SES is associated with better long-term recovery after discharge from rehabilitation. Understanding these factors can improve outpatient long-term stroke care and lead to better recovery.KEY MESSAGEHigher pre-stroke socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with better long-term recovery after discharge from rehabilitation both in terms of motor function and self-reported health status.Higher SES is associated with significantly higher utilization of outpatient therapies.Discharge management of rehabilitation clinics should identify and address socioeconomic factors in order to detect individu...

Characteristics of hemodynamic parameters after fluid resuscitation and vasoactive drugs administration in pediatric shock: A prospective observational study
CONCLUSIONS: Most pediatric shock patients were hypodynamic. Even when the CI was normal, the preload, inotropy, and afterload may still be abnormal. It represented the inotropy as a key to hemodynamic.PMID:35495407 | PMC:PMC9052134 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2022.103521

Red cell distribution width: a novel predictive biomarker for stroke risk after transient ischaemic attack
CONCLUSIONS: The early determination of RDW is a promising, rapid, easy and inexpensive biomarker to predict the subsequent stroke in TIA patients, especially for IS. KEY MESSAGESThe most important result of our study is to show that (1) the higher RDW, the earlier the stroke onset and (2) RDW ≥13.95% has a 2.52-fold risk of ischaemic stroke in TIA patients, and RDW ≥12.85% has a 1.51-fold risk of haemorrhagic stroke. As an economic and accessible hematological marker, baseline RDW may serve as a useful biomarker for risk stratification in TIA patients.PMID:35471128 | PMC:PMC9045760 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2022.2059558

Interventional radiology in low- and middle-income countries
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2022 Apr 5;77:103594. doi: 10.1016/j.amsu.2022.103594. eCollection 2022 May.ABSTRACTWith advancements in imaging techniques, interventional radiology (IR) has found an increased utility in multiple diseases such as ischemic stroke, tissue biopsies, oncology, trauma, etc. The benefit has been twofold in being minimally invasive and improved outcomes. IR in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is still in its nascent phase. The many hurdles include poorly structured post-graduate training, cost of procedures, and lack of awareness among referring physicians. There is a significant need to increase th...

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma revealed by a cerebral vascular stroke: A case report
We report the case of a 75-year-old patient admitted to the emergency room following a classic hemorrhagic stroke. The CT scan showed a hyperdense tumor-like process with perilesional edema, the diagnosis reinforced by (MRI). The patient underwent macroscopically total surgical excision and the anatomo pathological examination concluded a diffuse non-Hodgkin's B large cell lymphoma. The follow up was marked by a clear clinical improvement. Primary cerebral lymphomas can be polymorphic, so this diagnosis should always be kept in mind during stroke manifestations. This case illustrates the diagnostic difficulty of this rare ...
