Risk profile, antithrombotic treatment and clinical outcomes of patients in Nordic countries with atrial fibrillation - results from the GARFIELD-AF registry
CONCLUSION: Nordic patients had significantly higher major bleeding than Non-Nordic-European patients. In contrast, rates of all-cause mortality and non-haemorrhagic stroke/SE were comparable.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: Unique identifier: NCT01090362. URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov.KEY MESSAGE: Nordic countries had significantly higher major bleeding than Non-Nordic-European countries. Rates of mortality and non-haemorrhagic stroke/SE were similar .PMID:33818226 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2021.1893897

The utility of brain CT scan modality in the management of dizziness at the emergency department: A retrospective single-center study
CONCLUSION: The study's findings indicate low effectiveness of head CT scan compared to MRI for dizziness management. Future studies are suggested to provide more insights into the cost-effectiveness and utility of head CT scans and MRI in providing valuable findings.PMID:33796287 | PMC:PMC7995485 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2021.102220

Stroke mimics: incidence, aetiology, clinical features and treatment
Ann Med. 2021 Dec;53(1):420-436. doi: 10.1080/07853890.2021.1890205.ABSTRACTMimics account for almost half of hospital admissions for suspected stroke. Stroke mimics may present as a functional (conversion) disorder or may be part of the symptomatology of a neurological or medical disorder. While many underlying conditions can be recognized rapidly by careful assessment, a significant proportion of patients unfortunately still receive thrombolysis and admission to a high-intensity stroke unit with inherent risks and unnecessary costs. Accurate diagnosis is important as recurrent presentations may be common in many disorder...

Vertebral artery injury due to air rifle: A case report
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2021 Feb 5;63:102149. doi: 10.1016/j.amsu.2021.01.097. eCollection 2021 Mar.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: This case report presents a rare case of vertebral artery and spinal cord injury due to air rifle pellet.CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 19-year-old male was shot on his left neck incidentally during recreational air rifle game. He was taken to the other hospital before being referred to our hospital.CLINICAL FINDINGS AND INVESTIGATIONS: The patient presented with total loss of motoric function on his left side of the body together with sensoric function on the contralateral side from the level of ...

Inadequate oral anticoagulation with warfarin in women with cerebrovascular event and history of atrial fibrillation: the FibStroke study.
CONCLUSIONS: OAC was underused in high-risk AF patients, particularly women, but prescribed often in men with low or moderate stroke risk. Reasons for omitting OAC treatment were poorly reported, particularly for women. KEY MESSAGE Women were at higher stroke risk, but were less often treated with oral anticoagulation (OAC). Men were more often on OAC at low or moderate stroke risk. Reasons for omitting guideline based OAC were poorly reported, particularly for women. PMID: 33475002 [PubMed - in process]

Title: Cytomegalovirus antibody levels and mortality among hospitalized elderly patients.
Conclusions: Increased IgG antibody levels against CMV are associated with increased short and long-term mortality in elderly hospitalized patients, especially in the patients without cardiovascular disease. PMID: 32803995 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prognostic value of myocardial injury-related findings onresting electrocardiography for cardiovascular risk in the asymptomatic general population: The 12-year follow-up report from the Ansan-Ansung cohort.
Conclusions: The presence of STA oranterior PQ wasassociated with worse cardiovascular outcomes in the asymptomatic general population. However, the addition of MIFs to the conventional risk estimators was of limited value in the prediction of MACEs. Key MessagesMyocardial injury-related findings including ST-T wave abnormalities and anterior pathologic Q waves in resting electrocardiography predict long-term cardiovascular outcomes in an asymptomatic low-risk population. However, ST-T wave abnormalities and anterior pathologic Q waves add only limited value to conventional cardiovascular risk estimators in the prediction o...

The prevalence and prognostic significance of interatrial block in the general population.
Discussion IAB is a rather frequent finding in the general population. IAB is a risk factor for AF and is associated with an increased risk of stroke or TIA independently of associated AF. Key messagesBoth partial and advanced interatrial block are associated with increased risk of atrial fibrillation in the general population.Advanced interatrial block is an independent risk factor for stroke and transient ischemic attack. The clinical significance of interatrial block is dependent on the subtype classification. Endothelial function in patients with atrial fibrillation.
Authors: Khan AA, Thomas GN, Lip GYH, Shantsila A Abstract Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart arrhythmia and is associated with poor outcomes. The adverse effects of atrial fibrillation are mediated through multiple pathways, including endothelial dysfunction, as measured by flow-mediated dilatation. Flow-mediated dilatation has demonstrated endothelial dysfunction in several conditions and is associated with poor outcomes including mortality, yet can be improved with medical therapy. It is thus a useful tool in assessing endothelial function in patients.Endothelial dysfunction is present in patients with...
