Violet discoloration of urine: A case report and a literature review
CONCLUSION: Purple Urine Bag Syndrome can be managed by changing urinary catheter, and by the administration of appropriate antibiotics. Such event can be easily misdiagnosed thus leading to unnecessary and consuming measures. Creating a better awareness of this condition among physicians and healthcare givers is essential for better patient outcomes.PMID:34354830 | PMC:PMC8321942 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2021.102570

Association between the liver fat score (LFS) and cardiovascular diseases in the national health and nutrition examination survey 1999-2016
CONCLUSIONS: NAFLD is usually asymptomatic, but this large study of a large general population shows that LFS is associated with CHD, CHF, angina pectoris, cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Determining the LFS is worthwhile, as it identifies people with NAFLD, who may also be at increased cardiovascular risk.Key MessagesLiver fat score (LFS), a non-invasive marker of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is associated with coronary heart disease (CHD), congestive heart failure (CHF) and angina.LFS is also associated with increased cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.Determining the LFS is worthwhile as it ide...

Walnut intake, cognitive outcomes and risk factors: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Due to the non-uniformity of tests for cognition-related outcomes, definitive conclusions regarding the effect of walnut consumption on cognition could not be reached. Additionally, evidence does not show associations between walnut intake and glucose homeostasis or inflammation, cognitive decline risk-factors. High-quality studies with standardized measures are needed to clarify the role of walnuts in cognitive health.KEY MESSAGESThis is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 5 randomized clinical trials and 7 observational study articles of the impact of walnut intake on cognition decline and 27 randomized...

Effects of hypertension on the outcomes of COVID-19: a multicentre retrospective cohort study
Conclusion: Hypertension does not affect the outcome of COVID-19, which is different than the conclusions drawn in other studies. However, the 28-day mortality and total 60-day mortality rates of hypertensive patients (age ≥ 70) with COVID-19 were significantly elevated, and compared with the group of survivors, non-surviving COVID-19 patients with hypertension were older, had more basic diseases and had a more severe clinical condition.PMID:34080499 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2021.1931957

Impact of low triiodothyronine syndrome on long-term outcomes in patients with myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries
CONCLUSIONS: LT3S was independently associated with poor outcomes after MINOCA. Routine assessment of LT3S may provide valuable prognostic information in this specific population.PMID:34037508 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2021.1931428

Plexus anesthesia versus general anesthesia for carotid endarterectomy: A systematic review with meta-analyses
CONCLUSIONS: Based on the current, high risk of bias evidence, we concluded there is a need for new randomized clinical trials with overall low risk of bias comparing plexus anesthesia with general anesthesia in carotid endarterectomy with patch closure of the arterial wall in patients with a symptomatic and significant (≥50%) stenosis of the internal carotid artery.Protocol unique identification number (UIN): CRD42019139913, (https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?RecordID=139913).PMID:33996058 | PMC:PMC8094902 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2021.102327

Complications of endo-vascular aortic repair for abdominal aortic aneurysm: A retrospective single-centre experience
CONCLUSION: EVAR showed a high technical success rate with no conversion to OAR. The most common complications were type II and type I endoleaks followed by graft limb occlusion. The 30-day mortality was 2.3% due to perioperative MI. Only one late stent-graft related mortality was registered due to rupture-EVAR.PMID:33850623 | PMC:PMC8039833 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2021.102219

Risk profile, antithrombotic treatment and clinical outcomes of patients in Nordic countries with atrial fibrillation - results from the GARFIELD-AF registry
CONCLUSION: Nordic patients had significantly higher major bleeding than Non-Nordic-European patients. In contrast, rates of all-cause mortality and non-haemorrhagic stroke/SE were comparable.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: Unique identifier: NCT01090362.
