Undetermined stroke with an embolic pattern--a common phenotype with high early recurrence risk.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite their younger age and more favorable risk factor profile compared with other phenotypes, USEP exhibited a high risk of stroke recurrence. PMID: 26224200 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Burden of depression and predictors among Ethiopian stroke survivors: Cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: The study findings presented that nearly half of the stroke patients suffered from post stroke depression. Post-stroke depression was strongly associated with patient occupation, marital status, and level of education There is urgent need for integration of screening for and management of post-stroke depression among stroke survivors.PMID:34712476 | PMC:PMC8531554 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2021.102926

Neurophysiology tools to lower the stroke onset to treatment time during the golden hour: microwaves, bioelectrical impedance and near infrared spectroscopy
Ann Med. 2022 Dec;54(1):2658-2671. doi: 10.1080/07853890.2022.2124448.ABSTRACTReperfusion therapy administration timing in acute ischaemic stroke is the main determinant of patients' mortality and long-term disability. Indeed, the first hour from the stroke onset is defined the "golden hour", in which the treatment has the highest efficacy and lowest side effects. Delayed ambulance transport, inappropriate triage and difficulty in accessing CT scans lead to delayed onset to treatment time (OTT) in clinical practice. To date brain CT scan is needed to rule out intracranial haemorrhage, which is a major contraindication to t...

Predictive value of motor-evoked potentials for motor recovery in patients with hemiparesis secondary to acute ischemic stroke
CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with moderate-to-severe ischemic stroke, MEP + patients had better motor recoveries (approximately 70%) than MEP- patients at 90 days post-stroke. MEP + patients had better functional outcomes than MEP- patients.PMID:37345693 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2023.2225144

Association of beta-2-microglobulin, cystatin C and lipocalin-2 with stroke risk in the general Chinese population
CONCLUSION: Elevated serum B2M, cystatin C and LCN-2 levels are associated with stroke risk. They may be novel biomarkers for clinicians to assess stroke risk.Key messagesSerum beta-2-microglobulin, cystatin C and lipocalin-2 levels are significantly associated with stroke risk.Beta-2-microglobulin, cystatin C and lipocalin-2 may serve as useful biomarkers for stroke risk stratification in the general population.PMID:37155257 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2023.2203516

Seasonality of Stroke in Finland.
CONCLUSIONS: All major stroke subtypes occurred most commonly in autumn and most infrequently in summer. Seasonality of in-hospital mortality and length of hospital stay appears to vary by stroke subtype. The seasonal pattern of ischemic stroke occurrence appears to have changed during the past decades. Lowering C-reactive protein with statins after an ischemic stroke avoids mortality and readmissions. A prospective cohort study.
CONCLUSIONS: Therapy with statins, either previous or early initiation, after an ischemic stroke, could improve the survival and readmission rates by lowering both cholesterol and hsCRP levels. PMID: 25895539 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Are 12-lead ECG findings associated with the risk of cardiovascular events after ischemic stroke in young adults?
CONCLUSION: A 12-lead ECG can be used for risk prediction of cardiovascular events but not for recurrent stroke in young IS patients. KEY MESSAGES ECG is an easy, inexpensive, and useful tool for identifying young ischemic stroke patients with a high risk for recurrent cardiovascular events and it has a statistically significant association with these events even after adjusting for confounding factors. Bundle branch blocks, P-terminal force, broader QRS complex, LVH according to Cornell voltage duration criteria, more leftward P-wave axis, prolonged QTc, and P-wave duration >120 ms are predictors for future cardiovas...

The Effects of Body Mass Index on In-hospital mortality following first ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke events: Does the "obesity paradox" apply?
CONCLUSION: Obese patients are less likely to die during hospitalization following first-time non-subarachnoid hemorrhage and ischemic stroke than non-overweight/non-obese patients. These findings support the "obesity paradox" concept, though more research is needed for recurrent stroke patients.PMID:34691415 | PMC:PMC8519764 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2021.102839

Red cell distribution width: a novel predictive biomarker for stroke risk after transient ischaemic attack
CONCLUSIONS: The early determination of RDW is a promising, rapid, easy and inexpensive biomarker to predict the subsequent stroke in TIA patients, especially for IS. KEY MESSAGESThe most important result of our study is to show that (1) the higher RDW, the earlier the stroke onset and (2) RDW ≥13.95% has a 2.52-fold risk of ischaemic stroke in TIA patients, and RDW ≥12.85% has a 1.51-fold risk of haemorrhagic stroke. As an economic and accessible hematological marker, baseline RDW may serve as a useful biomarker for risk stratification in TIA patients.PMID:35471128 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2022.2059558

Correlation between dietary selenium intake and stroke in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2018
CONCLUSIONS: Dietary selenium had a negative and non-linear correlation with the risk of stroke in adults. The correlation varied across different population subgroups.KEY MESSAGESDietary selenium had a negative and non-linear correlation with the risk of stroke in adults.Non-linear negative correlation trends were observed in subpopulations of females, age <60 years, poverty-income ratio <2.14, overweight and obesity, hypertension, non-diabetes, and non-anaemia.Dietary selenium intake of approximately 105 μg per day has an optimum effect on stroke.PMID:35594240 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2022.2058079
