Leptin predicts short-term major adverse cardiac events in patients with coronary artery disease.
CONCLUSIONS: High plasma leptin levels predict short-term occurrence of CHF or cardiac death and ACS or stroke in patients with CAD independently of established risk factors. Electrocardiogram changes and atrial arrhythmias in individuals carrying sodium channel SCN5A D1275N mutation.

Effect of renal function on whole blood and fibrin clot formation in atrial fibrillation patients on warfarin.
CONCLUSION: In warfarinised AF patients, renal function is linked to whole blood clot and fibrin clot formation, structure and dissolution, but has no effect on the INR. Key messages Despite oral anticoagulation, patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) still suffer from stroke and venous thromboembolism. The effect of renal function in warfarinised patients with AF is unknown and may account for excess thrombosis and/or haemorrhage. Using two different laboratory methods, our data point to an effect of renal function on clot structure and function that is independent of an effect of warfarin.

Diabetes and new-onset atrial fibrillation in a hypertensive population.
CONCLUSION: Diabetes was modestly associated with new-onset AF in hypertensive patients with no ischemic vascular disease. Among diabetic patients, only obesity reached significance in its association with this arrhythmia.

Time interval between infective endocarditis first symptoms and diagnosis: relationship to infective endocarditis characteristics, microorganisms and prognosis.
CONCLUSIONS: The time interval between IE first symptoms and diagnosis is closely related to the IE clinical presentation, patient characteristics and causative microorganism. Better prognosis reported in late-diagnosed IE may be related to a higher rate of valvular surgery. Seasonality of Stroke in Finland.
CONCLUSIONS: All major stroke subtypes occurred most commonly in autumn and most infrequently in summer. Seasonality of in-hospital mortality and length of hospital stay appears to vary by stroke subtype. The seasonal pattern of ischemic stroke occurrence appears to have changed during the past decades.

Obstructive sleep apnea risk and psychological health among non-Hispanic blacks in the Metabolic Syndrome Outcome (MetSO) cohort study.
CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that non-Hispanic blacks with metabolic syndrome who experience anxiety and/or depression should be screened for OSA.

Are 12-lead ECG findings associated with the risk of cardiovascular events after ischemic stroke in young adults?
CONCLUSION: A 12-lead ECG can be used for risk prediction of cardiovascular events but not for recurrent stroke in young IS patients. KEY MESSAGES ECG is an easy, inexpensive, and useful tool for identifying young ischemic stroke patients with a high risk for recurrent cardiovascular events and it has a statistically significant association with these events even after adjusting for confounding factors. Predictive role of CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores on stroke and thromboembolism in patients without atrial fibrillation: a meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Though having good diagnostic accuracy, the clinical application of the CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores in predicting risk of stroke development in non-AF patients still needs further validation. Key message The overall diagnostic accuracy of CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc in stroke-risk stratification was good in patients with non-atrial fibrillation.

Is monocyte to HDL ratio superior to monocyte count in predicting the cardiovascular outcomes: evidence from a large cohort of Chinese patients undergoing coronary angiography.
CONCLUSIONS: Our data firstly indicated that MHR was an independent predictor of MACEs whereas the prognostic impact was not superior to MC in patients who underwent coronary angiography. Key messages MHR has been suggested as a novel prognostic indicator of several cardiovascular diseases. No study is currently available regarding the comparison of MHR to MC in predicting the outcomes in a large cohort of patients undergoing coronary angiography. Our data firstly indicate that MHR is independently associated with MACEs in patients undergoing coronary angiography whereas the prognostic impact is similar to MC.

Conclusion Our results suggest that non-Hispanic blacks with metabolic syndrome who experience anxiety and/or depression should be screened for OSA. Key messages This study assessed associations of moderate to severe depression and anxiety with risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among non-Hispanic blacks with metabolic syndrome. Patients with depression had nearly two-fold increased odds of being at risk for OSA. Patients with anxiety had three-fold increased odds of being at risk for OSA.

MicroRNA profiling in migraine without aura: pilot study.
CONCLUSION: A specific circulating miRNAs profile is associated with migraine without aura. Remarkably, the same miRNAs are known to be modulated in the setting of atherosclerosis and stroke in humans. This study represents a first step towards further characterization of MO diagnosis/pathophysiology, also in relation to its link with cardiovascular risk.
