Combining Human Umbilical Cord Blood Cells With Erythropoietin Enhances Angiogenesis/Neurogenesis and Behavioral Recovery After Stroke
In conclusion, our results suggest that hUCBC infusion in combination with EPO administration demonstrates therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of stroke-induced injury by promoting neurogenesis and angiogenesis. Further research that delineates the therapeutic mechanism of systemically administered hUCBC and EPO is required. Ethics Statement All experimental procedures involving animals were performed in accordance with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals as adopted and promulgated by the U. S. National Institutes of Health and were approved by CHA University Institutional Animal Care & Use Com...

Influence of Statin Pretreatment on Initial Neurological Severity and Short-Term Functional Outcome in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients: The Fukuoka Stroke Registry
This study aimed at determining these associations in ischemic stroke patients. Methods: Among patients registered in the Fukuoka Stroke Registry from June 2007 to October 2014, 3,848 patients with ischemic stroke within 24 h of onset, who had been functionally independent before onset, were enrolled in this study. Ischemic stroke was classified as cardioembolic or non-cardioembolic infarction. Primary and secondary study outcomes were mild neurological symptoms defined as a National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score of ≤4 on admission and favorable functional outcome defined as a modified Rankin Scale score of ≤...

U ‐curve relation between cholesterol and prior ischemic stroke
ConclusionOur hypothesis was falsified. The association between lower cholesterol levels and higher frequency of prior ischemic stroke in patients with cholesterol <5.5 mmol/L cannot be solely an effect of aggressive statin treatment in patients with prior ischemic stroke, as the association pertained also to patients who did not use statin. Previous studies on ischemic stroke patients have shown conflicting results concerning the association between cholesterol level and patient outcome. We hypothesized that acute ischemic stroke patients with increased cholesterol on admission more frequently had experienced prior i...

Left ventricular wall motion abnormalities are associated with stroke recurrence
Conclusions: This study suggests that LVWMA, even when unassociated with high-risk cardioembolic sources, could be an independent predictor for stroke recurrence in patients with ischemic stroke.

Temporal Trends and Predictors of Drug Utilization and Outcomes in First-Ever Stroke Patients: A Population-Based Study Using the Singapore Stroke Registry
ConclusionsPrescription of secondary stroke preventive medications (particularly in ischemic stroke) was associated with more favorable outcomes, highlighting the importance of physician adherence to evidence-based pharmacotherapy.

Statin Effects in Atrial Fibrillation-Related Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Statin therapy for AF-related stroke may reduce all-cause mortality and improve functional outcomes. Randomized controlled studies are warranted to confirm the effects of statins on the outcomes of AF-related stroke.

Effect of 20 mg/day Atorvastatin: Recurrent Stroke Survey in Chinese Ischemic Stroke Patients with Prior Intracranial Hemorrhage.
CONCLUSIONS: Medication with 20 mg/day atorvastatin may be beneficial in reducing ischemic stroke recurrence in ischemic stroke patients with a history of ICH and is not associated with an increased risk of ICH recurrence. PMID: 23894236 [PubMed]

Transient ischemic attack and ischemic stroke patients with or without prior stroke
ConclusionsBoth in TIA and IS, vascular risk factors were more common in patients with a history of stroke compared with those without. In contrast to other secondary preventive medications, OAC treatment in the presence of AF was underutilized in patients with a history of stroke.

Statin treatment before stroke reduces pro-inflammatory cytokine levels after stroke.
CONCLUSION: Stroke induces changes in the RhoA-ROCK pathway in T-cells. CRP and NIHSS score correlated positively in the study. Statins may have an anti-inflammatory effect as statin treatment before stroke reduces post-stroke pro-inflammatory levels. RhoA GTPase and its downstream effectors are possibly the key to improve statin treatment in stroke. PMID: 30574850 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Characteristics and Factors for Short-Term Functional Outcome in Stroke Patients With Atrial Fibrillation, Nationwide Retrospective Cohort Study
Conclusion: Our results suggest that presence of non-relevant extracranial cerebral atherosclerosis may affect poor functional outcome and prior stroke statin therapy may be feasible in Korean stroke patients with AF.

Prestroke statin use enhances collateralization in acute ischemic stroke patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that prestroke statin use was associated with good leptomeningeal collaterals and clinical outcomes in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients presenting with occlusion of the middle cerebral artery. However, clinical studies should be conducted to verify this claim. PMID: 32925118 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Primary Prevention of Stroke in Argentina: a Missed Opportunity? Data from the ARENAS Registry (P1.111)
CONCLUSIONS: this study provides data on stroke risk factors prevalence and control in an Argentine cohort. Our results show a high percentage of at-risk patients without adequate control in the primary prevention setting, denoting a missing opportunity to reduce the burden of stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Atallah has nothing to disclose.
