The utility of heart-type free fatty-acid binding-protein (HFABP) levels for differentiating acute ischemic stroke from stroke mimics
This study was a prospective, single-center, observational diagnostic accuracy study with a nested cohort design. The estimated sample size was 126 patients, with a 1:1 case and control ratio. We included all consecutive patients with a lateralizing symptom (motor or sensory) or finding suggesting AIS (139 patients) who presented to ED within 24  h of their symptom onset and collected plasma at admission to the ED. After further evaluations, 111 patients (79.8%) were diagnosed with AIS and 28 with other neurological diseases (stroke-mimics).FindingsIn our study, the median HFABP levels of the cases and controls were 2.6 Â...

Iatrogenic Air Embolisms During Endovascular Interventions: Impact of Origin and Number of Air Bubbles on Cerebral Infarctions
ConclusionIatrogenic AEs originating at the ascending aorta cause a  similar number and pattern of cerebral infarctions compared to those with origin at the carotid artery. These findings underline the relevance and potential risk of AE occurring during endovascular interventions at the aortic valve and ascending aorta.

Endovascular Treatment for Acute Isolated Internal Carotid Artery Occlusion
ConclusionAlthough the benefit on functional outcome did not reach statistical significance, the results for NIHSS score improvement, and safety support the use of EVT in patients with stroke due to isolated ICA occlusion.

Mesenchymal-derived extracellular vesicles enhance microglia-mediated synapse remodeling after cortical injury in aging Rhesus monkeys
Understanding the microglial neuro-immune interactions in the primate brain is vital to developing therapeutics for cortical injury, such as stroke or traumatic brain injury. Our previous work showed that mese...

Frequency and predictors of poststroke epilepsy after mechanical thrombectomy for large vessel occlusion stroke: results from a multicenter cohort study
ConclusionIn our study, patients with large vessel occlusion stroke receiving MT had a 9% prevalence of PSE over a median follow-up period of 6.5  years. Besides larger infarct size, presence of cerebral microbleeds on brain MRI predicted PSE occurrence.

Association of Ferroptosis with Severity and Outcomes in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients Undergoing Endovascular Thrombectomy: A Case-control Study
AbstractFerroptosis, an iron-dependent form of cell death, is characterized by intracellular accumulation of iron and reactive oxygen species-induced lipid peroxidation. Animal experiments have shown the important roles of ferroptosis in ischemic stroke, but the evidence in human stroke is insufficient. This prospective study evaluated the associations between plasma ferroptosis biomarkers at hyperacute stage and long-term outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke undergoing endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). The plasma samples were collected immediately before and after EVT (T1 and T2) and at 24  h (T3) for the 126 s...

LncRNA XIST Exacerbates Oxygen-Glucose Deprivation/Reoxygenation-Induced Cerebral Injury Through the miR-25-3p/TRAF3 Axis
AbstractIschemic stroke causes lethal damage to the brain. Identifying key regulators of OGD/R-induced cerebral injury is important for developing novel therapies for ischemic stroke. HMC3 and SH-SY5Y cells were treated with OGD/R as anin vitro ischemic stroke model. Cell viability and apoptosis were determined via CCK-8 assay and flow cytometry. Inflammatory cytokines were examined by ELISA. Luciferase activity was measured for evaluating the interaction of XIST, miR-25-3p, and TRAF3. Bcl-2, Bax, Bad, cleaved-caspase 3, total caspase 3, and TRAF3 were detected via western blotting. HMC3 and SH-SY5Y cells showed increased ...

SLC26A11 Inhibition Reduces Oncotic Neuronal Death and Attenuates Stroke Reperfusion Injury
In this study, electrophysiological properties of chloride current in primary cultured neurons were characterized using low chloride solution, 4,4 ′-diisothiocyano-2,2′-stilbenedisulfonic acid, and SLC26A11-specific siRNA under physiological conditions or ATP-depleted conditions. In vivo effect of SLC26A11 was evaluated on a rat stroke reperfusion model. We found that SLC26A11 mRNA in primary cultured neurons was upregulated as early as 6  h after oxygen glucose deprivation, and later, the protein level was elevated accordingly. Blockade of SLC26A11 activity could reduce chloride entry and attenuate hypoxia-induced ne...

Association between within-visit blood pressure variability, stroke, coronary heart disease, and cardiovascular mortality
CONCLUSIONS: Within-visit variability in SBP is associated with increased risks of stroke, coronary heart disease, and cardiovascular mortality, but the relationship is confounded by age and covariates.PMID:37655640 | DOI:10.5603/pjnns.94839
