235 Association of stroke with psoriasis in end-stage renal disease patients
Previous research in the general population suggests that the inflammatory skin disease psoriasis is associated with an increased risk of vascular events, such as stroke. Thus, psoriasis may also represent a significant risk factor for stroke in dialysis patients. We queried the United States Renal Data System for incident dialysis patients between 2004 and 2015. Psoriasis was defined as having at least two ICD-9 or ICD-10 diagnosis codes. ICD codes were also used to query the outcome of interest, stroke, as well as other clinical risk factors.

The cardiovascular safety of oral alitretinoin. A population-based cohort study involving 19,513 patients exposed to oral alitretinoin
CONCLUSIONS: These data from an exhaustive nationwide population-based study did not support an increase in the incidence of atherothrombotic events under alitretinoin, regardless of the baseline cardiovascular risk of the patient.PMID:33735442 | DOI:10.1111/bjd.20069

How current biologic therapies affect the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with plaque psoriasis? A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Conclusions: Further trials are needed, including longer follow-up and patients with an increased cardiovascular risk, to assess the risk of MACEs. PMID: 33603620 [PubMed]

18756 Skin biopsy for the diagnosis of cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy: A report of two cases
Skin biopsy has become a useful tool for the diagnosis of extracutaneous diseases as a relatively benign procedure with a good performance. The evaluation of dermal and epidermal innervation and vasculature show distinct changes that support the diagnosis of specific neurologic diseases. Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is an inherited angiopathy caused by mutations in the NOTCH3 gene on chromosome 19. It is characterized by stroke and vascular cognitive impairment in the young and other neurological manifestations.

16834 Risk of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke subsequent to diagnosis for hidradenitis suppurativa: Real-world data from a large urban Midwestern US patient population
Background: Although hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) has been reported to be associated with cardiovascular events, the risk for stroke has been inconsistently reported. The aim of this study is to determine the incidence of stroke in HS patients from real world data within a large urban midwestern US dermatology patient population.

Dysphagia, Immobility, and Diet Acceptance: Main Factors Associated with Increased Risk of Pressure Injury in Patients Hospitalized after Stroke
OBJECTIVE To determine the predisposing factors for PI in patients hospitalized after stroke. METHODS This 7-day longitudinal study followed up with patients hospitalized after stroke. Assessments included mobility, nutrition, and the presence of dysphagia and anemia. The nutrition evaluation was based on anthropometric, biochemical, and dietary determinants. Pressure injury (PI) risk was assessed via the Braden Scale. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were applied. RESULTS Patients who were bedridden showed a greater risk of PI development upon admission (P = .004) and 7 days later (P

Comment on “Patient preference for cellulitis treatment: At-home care is preferred to hospital-based treatment”
To the Editor: We  read with interest the recent survey study from Gabel et al1 highlighting the preference of patients for at-home treatment of cellulitis rather than hospital-based care. Notably, these results reflected patient preferences well before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In light of recent reports linking patient anxiety over COVID-19 to delayed and decreased hospital presentations for acute medical problems such as myocardial infarction2 and stroke,3 we examined whether a similar trend was observed for patients presenting with skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) at an urban tertiary car e center at...

Identification of a mosaic activating mutation in GNA11 in atypical Sturge-Weber Syndrome
Sturge-Weber syndrome (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man #185300) is a capillary malformation condition (Bichsel and Bischoff, 2019, Comi, 2015). Affected regions include the skin (typically with facial cutaneous vascular malformations called port-wine birthmarks), brain (often resulting in seizures, intellectual disability, and recurrent stroke-like episodes), and eye (often causing glaucoma). We (Shirley et al., 2013) and others (Frigerio et al., 2015, Nakashima et al., 2014) reported that 90% of individuals with SWS or nonsyndromic PWB have a mosaic, activating mutation in GNAQ, encoding G protein subunit alpha q (G αq).

074 There are two isoforms of BP180 in the mouse brain
BP180 is a hemidesmosomal protein in the skin and other epithelial tissues. The extracellular domain NC16A of BP180 is the main target of pathogenic autoantibodies in bullous pemphigoid (BP). Anti-BP180 autoantibodies exist in both the sera and cerebrospinal fluids of patients with dementia or stroke, suggesting that BP180 could be a shared autoantigen of the skin and brain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of BP180 in the brain and whether BP180 in the brain is the same as skin in mice.

Intravenous injection of Muse cells as a potential therapeutic approach for epidermolysis bullosa
Multilineage-differentiating stress-enduring (Muse) cells, positive for stage-specific embryonic antigen (SSEA)-3, are endogenous pluripotent-like stem cells that reside in the bone marrow, peripheral blood and connective tissue of organs, and correspond to several percent of cultured mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) and fibroblasts (Kuroda et al., 2010). As shown by animal models of acute myocardial infarction, stroke and chronic kidney disease, intravenously injected Muse cells specifically home to damaged sites via the sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P, produced by damaged cells) – S1P receptor 2 (expressed on Muse ce...

Paraoxonase-1 and other factors related to oxidative stress in psoriasis.
Conclusions: Psoriasis promotes arteriosclerosis development by decreasing the levels of antiatherogenic and increasing the levels of proatherogenic agents. Adverse changes in psoriatic patients involve activity of paraoxonase-1, levels of α-tocopherol, uric acid, homocysteine as compared to healthy individuals selected by their age, BMI and abdominal circumference value. Atypical purpuric oedema of the nose during granulomatosis with polyangiitis.
We report the case of a 47-year-old woman presenting purpuric oedematous plaque with bullous detachment of the nose and hospitalised for the assessment of two suspicious neoplastic lung lesions discovered as a result of a recent stroke and repeated seromucosal otitis. Granulomatosis with polyangeitis was suspected because of multiple systemic lesions. The histopathology of skin lesions and laboratory investigation results were consistent with this diagnosis. A favourable outcome was achieved with corticosteroids and rituximab. DISCUSSION: The diagnosis of GPA is based on criteria established by the American College of...
