Risk for Arterial Thromboembolic Events (ATEs) in Patients with Advanced Urinary Tract Cancer (aUTC) Treated with First-Line Chemotherapy: Single-Center, Observational Study
Curr Oncol. 2022 Aug 24;29(9):6077-6090. doi: 10.3390/curroncol29090478.ABSTRACTArterial thromboembolism has been associated with cancer or its treatment. Unlike venous thromboembolism, the incidence and risk factors have not been extensively studied. Here, we investigated the incidence of arterial thromboembolic events (ATEs) in an institutional series of advanced urinary tract cancer (aUTC) treated with cytotoxic chemotherapy. The ATE definition included peripheral arterial embolism/thrombosis, ischemic stroke and coronary events. A total of 354 aUTC patients were analyzed. Most patients (95.2%) received platinum-based c...

Mortality and Morbidity Effects of Long-Term Exposure to Low-Level PM < sub > 2.5 < /sub > , BC, NO < sub > 2 < /sub > , and O < sub > 3 < /sub > : An Analysis of European Cohorts in the ELAPSE Project
CONCLUSIONS: Long-term exposure to PM2.5, NO2, and BC was positively associated with natural-cause and cause-specific mortality in the pooled cohort and the administrative cohorts. Associations were found well below current limit values and guidelines for PM2.5 and NO2. Associations tended to be supralinear, with steeper slopes at low exposures with no indication of a threshold. Two-pollutant models documented the importance of characterizing the ambient mixture with both NO2 and PM2.5. We mostly found negative associations with O3. In two-pollutant models with NO2, the negative associations with O3 were attenuated to esse...

Analysis of Epidemiological Characteristics of New Cardiovascular Diseases in Cancer Patients with Cardiovascular Disease
J Oncol. 2022 Aug 31;2022:5157398. doi: 10.1155/2022/5157398. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTIn cancer patients, a cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a prevalent occurrence. When a patient has both heart disease and cancer, the treatment can be complicated because treatment for one condition can have an adverse effect on the outcome of the other. A cardiovascular disease that involves heart failures, coronary artery disease (CAD), stroke, pericardial diseases, arrhythmias, and valve and vascular dysfunction is a serious worry for long-term cancer patients. Because preclinical research is limited, it is critical to comprehend the pa...

Increased Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) Level Is Highly Associated with Low Skeletal Muscle Mass in Asymptomatic Adults: A Population-Based Study
J Clin Med. 2022 Aug 26;11(17):5009. doi: 10.3390/jcm11175009.ABSTRACTWe investigated the relationship between high carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels and low skeletal muscle mass (LMM) in asymptomatic adults in a population-based study. A total of 202,602 adults (mean age 41.7 years) without malignancy, stroke, cardiovascular disease, or chronic lung/liver disease were included. A high CEA level was defined as ≥5 ng/mL. Skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) was calculated based on appendicular muscle mass (kg)/height (m)2. Participants were classified into three groups based on SMI: "normal", "mild LMM", and "severe LMM."...

Recent advances in drug delivery and targeting to the brain
J Control Release. 2022 Aug 31:S0168-3659(22)00574-0. doi: 10.1016/j.jconrel.2022.08.051. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOur body keeps separating the toxic chemicals in the blood from the brain. A significant number of drugs do not enter the central nervous system (CNS) due to the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Certain diseases, such as tumor growth and stroke, are known to increase the permeability of the BBB. However, the heterogeneity of this permeation makes it difficult and unpredictable to transport drugs to the brain. In recent years, research has been directed toward increasing drug penetration inside the brain, and na...

Computed Tomography Angiography Quantification of Intracranial and Extracranial Vascular Narrowing in Ischemic Stroke: Differences Between Patients With and Without Illicit Drug Use
CONCLUSIONS: By using computed tomography angiography, we found that stroke patients with history of cocaine consumption had a higher incidence of intracranial circulation narrowing compared with matched controls.PMID:36055121 | DOI:10.1097/RCT.0000000000001367
