Fifteen-minute consultation: Recognition of sickle cell crises in the paediatric emergency department
Children with sickle cell disease can develop life-threatening and painful crises that require prompt assessment and efficient management by healthcare professionals in the emergency or acute care setting. Due to migration patterns and improved survival rates in high-prevalence countries, there is an increased tendency to encounter these patients across the UK. These factors warrant regular revisions in sickle cell crisis management, along with education for medical personnel and patients to improve clinical care and patient management. The focus of this article is on the initial assessment and management of acute paediatr...

Stroke in pediatric ECMO patients: analysis of the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database
CONCLUSIONS: Over the years, there is an apparent increase in the diagnosis of stroke. All types of stroke in ECMO patients are associated with increased LOS, although mortality is increased in hemorrhagic and combined stroke only.IMPACT: Stroke is a commonly seen complication in pediatric patients supported by ECMO. Understanding the trends will help in identifying modifiable risk factors that predict poor outcomes in this patient population.PMID:35505077 | DOI:10.1038/s41390-022-02088-7

COVID-19 and neurologic manifestations: a synthesis from the child neurologist's corner
CONCLUSIONS: Various neurologic manifestations have been associated with children's SARS-CoV-2 infection. It is important to identify and give them proper and opportune treatment because they can be potentially grave and life-threatening; some can lead to long-lasting sequelae. Different neuro-pathophysiological mechanisms have been proposed, however, a causal relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection and neurologic manifestations remains to be proven. Patients with neurologic diseases are especially affected by COVID-19, not only by the disease itself but also by its complications and pandemic management measures.PMID:354...

A rare cause of stroke in young children: minor head trauma associated with mineralising lenticulostriate angiopathy in three patients
Paediatr Int Child Health. 2022 Apr 26:1-5. doi: 10.1080/20469047.2022.2066386. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcute basal ganglia infarct following minor head trauma in association with mineralisation of lenticulostriate arteries is an increasingly recognised entity in childhood stroke. Three cases with a classical history and phenotypical features of mineralising angiopathy are described. Case 1 was a 2-year-old girl who presented with acute onset hemiparesis with a same-side upper motor neuron (UMN)-type facial palsy following minor head trauma. Case 2 was a 14-month-old boy who presented with a left side hemiparesis and...
