Aspiration and dysphagia screening in acute stroke – the Gugging Swallowing Screen revisited
ConclusionsThis is the first time that a swallowing screening tool for patients with acute stroke has been revalidated in a larger population from another stroke center. The validity of a swallow screening test may vary according to different stroke severities.

Background and Purpose—Stroke guidelines recommend time-limited trials of nasogastric feeding prior to percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement. We sought to describe timing of PEG placement and identify factors associated with early PEG for acute ischemic stroke.Methods—We designed a retrospective observational study to examine time to PEG for ischemic stroke admissions in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, 2001 to 2011. Clinical significance of platelet reactivity during prasugrel therapy in patients with acute myocardial infarction.
CONCLUSIONS: It is feasible to treat AMI patients with prasugrel. HTPR is a significant independent risk factor for adverse events in AMI patients receiving prasugrel after primary PCI.

Prolonged impairment of deglutition in supratentorial ischaemic stroke: the predictive value of Parramatta Hospitals' Assessment of Dysphagia.
CONCLUSIONS: In a selected population at risk of aspiration, the PHAD with a threshold of 70 assessed in the second week after stroke onset may be a valuable tool to predict prolonged impairment of deglutition for another 4 weeks and to guide the decision about switching from NG to PEG tube feeding after supratentorial ischaemic stroke.

Pharyngeal Electrical Stimulation in Dysphagia Poststroke: A Prospective, Randomized Single-Blinded Interventional Study
Conclusions. Although the direction of observed differences were consistent with PES accelerating swallowing recovery over the first 2 weeks postintervention, suboptimal recruitment prevents definitive conclusions. Our study design experience and outcome data are essential to inform a definitive, multicenter randomized trial.

Swallowing Training Combined With Game-Based Biofeedback in Poststroke Dysphagia
Conclusions Laryngeal elevation training combined with game-based biofeedback augments the change in hyoid bone displacement and FOIS scores, and increases the NG tube removal rate in patients with poststroke dysphagia.

E-048 Factors Associated with Early Tracheostomy and Percutaneous Gastrostomy and Their Effects on Hospitalization in Hemorrhagic Stroke Patients
ConclusionsHemorrhagic stroke is a devastating neurovascular event that requires prompt intervention and vigilant management. Our study identified patient risk factors that may suggest candidacy for tracheotomy and PEG. Additionally, we found that timing of PEG may shape a patient’s hospital course. Complication rates related to tracheostomy and PEG in this population were minimal. In conclusion, this retrospective data set supports some benefit to early PEG placement in this population, and justifies the need for further prospective study.DisclosuresM. McCann: None. J. The lack of documentation of preferences in a cohort of adults who died after ischemic stroke
Conclusions:
Documented discussions about limitations on life-sustaining interventions during hospitalization were low, even though this cohort died within 30 days poststroke. Improving the documentation of preferences may be difficult given the 2015 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid 30-day stroke mortality hospital performance measure that is unadjusted for patient preferences regarding life-sustaining interventions.

Radiologic Percutaneous Gastrostomy in Nondistended Stomach: A Modified Approach
We describe a simple technique to prevent air escape from the stomach during gastrostomy tube placement. To the best of our knowledge, this technique has not yet been described in the literature.
Materials and Methods
Four patients with unsuccessful percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy were referred for fluoroscopic-guided gastrostomy. One patient had a pyriform sinus tumor and three had an ischemic stroke causing dysphagia. Limitations of Routine Verification of Nasogastric Tube Insertion Using X-ray and Auscultation: Two Case Reports of Life-Threatening Complications.
We present 2 cases of rare complications in which the routine verification methods could not detect all the complications related to the nasogastric tube placement. Failing a Dysphagia Screening Test after Acute Ischemic Stroke: Baseline Patient Factors and Outcomes (P6.037)
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with ischemic stroke who failed a dysphagia screening test had worse pre-admission function and more severe strokes, and developed much higher rates of complications and death than those who passed. Development and psychometric properties of ECPICID ‐AVC to measure informal caregivers’ skills when caring for older stroke survivors at home
ConclusionThe psychometric properties of the measurement tool showed acceptable results allowing its implementation in clinical practice by the nursing community staff for evaluating practical skills in informal caregivers when providing care to older stroke survivors living at home.
