Post-Stroke Working Memory Dysfunction: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review
AbstractThis review investigates the severity and nature of post-stroke working memory deficits with reference to the multi-component model of working memory. We conducted a systematic search in PubMed up to March 2019 with search terms for stroke and memory. Studies on adult stroke patients, that included a control group, and assessed working memory function, were selected. Effect sizes (Hedges ’g) were extracted from 50 studies (in total 3,084 stroke patients) based on the sample size, mean and standard deviation of patients and controls. Performance of stroke patients was compared to healthy controls on low-load (i.e....

Biphasic roles of pentraxin 3 in cerebrovascular function after white matter stroke.
Abstract Recent clinical studies suggest that pentraxin 3 (PTX3), which is known as an acute-phase protein that is produced rapidly at local sites of inflammation, may be a new biomarker of disease risk for central nervous system disorders, including stroke. However, the effects of PTX3 on cerebrovascular function in the neurovascular unit (NVU) after stroke are mostly unknown, and the basic research regarding the roles of PTX3 in NVU function is still limited. In this reverse translational study, we prepared mouse models of white matter stroke by vasoconstrictor (ET-1 or L-Nio) injection into the corpus callosum ...

Gender Difference in the Association Between Stroke Knowledge and Health Behavior Before the Onset of Stroke Among Chinese Hypertensive Patients
BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that men and women have different levels of stroke knowledge and differing health behaviors, which are important factors affecting blood pressure, as hypertension is a key risk factor for stroke occurrence. There has been little research on the effects of sex on the association between these 2 variables before the onset of stroke among Chinese hypertensive patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional study and a convenience sampling method were used. 272 male and 118 female hypertensive stroke patients were recruited. Each patient completed the Stroke Knowledge Questionnaire and the Health B...

Neurosteroids: a novel promise for the treatment of stroke and post ‐stroke complications
AbstractStroke is the primary reason for death and disability worldwide, with few treatment strategies to date. Neurosteroids, which are natural molecules in the brain, have aroused great interest in the field of stroke. Neurosteroids are a kind of steroid that acts on the nervous system, and are synthesized in the mitochondria of neurons or glial cells using cholesterol or other steroidal precursors. Neurosteroids mainly include estrogen, progesterone (PROG), allopregnanolone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and vitamin D (VD). Most of the preclinical studies have confirmed that neurosteroids can decrease the risk of strok...

Mechanical thrombectomy in patients with stroke due to large vessel occlusion in the anterior circulation and low baseline NIHSS score
J Integr Neurosci. 2021 Sep 30;20(3):645-650. doi: 10.31083/j.jin2003068.ABSTRACTWe sought to verify the benefit of mechanical thrombectomy in patients with acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion in the anterior circulation and low National Institute of Health stroke scale score at presentation. The prospective database of our stroke center was screened for patients with acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion and a baseline National Institute of Health stroke scale score ≤5 that had undergone mechanical thrombectomy. Outcome measures were the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at 90 days, brain b...
