Early retinal inflammatory biomarkers in the middle cerebral artery occlusion model of ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: This work demonstrates that there is a robust inflammatory response in the eye following MCAO, which may contribute to a worsening of retinal injury and visual impairment. These results mirror what has been observed in the brain after MCAO, suggesting a conserved inflammatory signaling response to ischemia in the central nervous system. Imaging of the eye may therefore serve as a useful non-invasive prognostic indicator of brain injury after MCAO. Future studies are needed to determine whether this inflammatory response is a potential target for therapeutic manipulation in retinal ischemia. PMID: 27293375 ...

The tos study control data: how well do neurology in-patients recall being examined and does it matter?
Conclusions Although recall bias is a potential problem for the TOS score, this control data indicates that it should not be seen as a significant issue and does not negate the findings of our previous data collection that large numbers of in–patients with neurological problems are not been appropriately examined. TOS scores provide a method of quantifying the thoroughness of neurological examination and we are at present in the process of organising a multicentre study in six countries using TOS scores to establish how widespread this problem is globally.

Left atrial volume changes is an early marker of end ‐organ damage in essential hypertension: A multidisciplinary approach to an old problem
ConclusionRT3DE measured LA phasic volumes and mechanical functions are associated with hypertensive EOD, which might serve as a surrogate endpoint for determining cardiovascular mortality and morbidity rates in patients with essential HT.

Spectrum of Eye Disease in Diabetes (SPEED) in India: A prospective facility-based study. Report # 3. Retinal vascular occlusion in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Conclusion: RVO is a frequent finding in people with T2DM. History of stroke carries the highest risk followed by HTN. The management of people with T2DM and RVO must also include comanagement of all associated systemic conditions.

Design of a Compact, Bimorph Deformable Mirror-Based Adaptive Optics Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope.
Authors: He Y, Deng G, Wei L, Li X, Yang J, Shi G, Zhang Y Abstract We have designed, constructed and tested an adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) using a bimorph mirror. The simulated AOSLO system achieves diffraction-limited criterion through all the raster scanning fields (6.4 mm pupil, 3° × 3° on pupil). The bimorph mirror-based AOSLO corrected ocular aberrations in model eyes to less than 0.1 μm RMS wavefront error with a closed-loop bandwidth of a few Hz. Facilitated with a bimorph mirror at a stroke of ±15 μm with 35 elements and an aperture of 20 mm, the new AOSLO system has a s...

Retinal pathology in idiopathic moyamoya angiopathy detected by optical coherence tomography
Conclusion: Our results indicate that even patients with moyamoya angiopathy who do not have obvious retinal abnormalities have retinal abnormalities. These can be detected by spectral domain optical coherence tomography, and the association of ONH abnormalities with the vascular changes may suggest that idiopathic moyamoya angiography is a systemic disease involving abnormalities of the early mesodermal development.

Statistical analysis of ocular monochromatic aberrations in Chinese population for adaptive optics ophthalmoscope design
Journal of Innovative Optical Health Sciences, Ahead of Print. It is necessary to know the distribution of the Chinese eye’s aberrations in clinical environment to guide high-resolution retinal imaging system design for large Chinese population application. We collected the monochromatic wave aberration of 332 healthy eyes and 344 diseased eyes in Chinese population across a 6.0-mm pupil. The aberration statistics of Chinese eyes including healthy eyes and diseased eyes were analyzed, and some differences of aberrations between the Chinese and European race were concluded. On this basis, the requirement for adaptive opti...

Vestibulocochlear nerve dysfunction as initial manifestation of Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia (P5.193)
Conclusions:Clinical findings from this case demonstrated early vascular complications of multiple peripheral neurosensory systems secondary to WM-related hyperviscosity. Early recognition of symptoms through detailed history taking and neurological examination is necessary for a correct diagnosis and better outcome.Disclosure: Dr. Humayun has nothing to disclose. Headache and pregnancy: a systematic review
AbstractThis systematic review summarizes the existing data on headache and pregnancy with a scope on clinical headache phenotypes, treatment of headaches in pregnancy and effects of headache medications on the child during pregnancy and breastfeeding, headache related complications, and diagnostics of headache in pregnancy. Headache during pregnancy can be both primary and secondary, and in the last case can be a symptom of a life-threatening condition. The most common secondary headaches are stroke, cerebral venous thrombosis, subarachnoid hemorrhage, pituitary tumor, choriocarcinoma, eclampsia, preeclampsia, idiopathic ...

Retinal Artery Occlusions.
Authors: Lang GE, Lang SJ Abstract Retinal artery occlusions are acute vascular diseases. Very often they are caused by an embolisation. Rarely a thrombosis is caused by an arteriitis. In the acute phase diagnosis in most of the cases can be made by ophthalmoscopy due to the whitish retinal edema and in central retinal artery occlusion the cherry red spot. Difficulties in making the diagnosis can occur in the chronic stage, especially after reperfusion of the retinal vessels, when the fundus colour returned to normal again. Several diagnostic procedures help to make the diagnosis. Unfortunately there is no generall...

Examining the ocular fundus in neurology
Purpose of review The funduscopic examination can be a technically difficult, and often omitted, portion of the neurologic examination, despite its great potential to influence patient care. Recent findings Medical practitioners are often first taught to examine the ocular fundus using a direct ophthalmoscope, however, this skill requires frequent practice. Nonmydriatic tabletop and portable fundus photography and even smartphone-based photography offer alternative and practical means for approaching examination of the ocular fundus. These alternative tools have been shown to be practical in a variety of settings incl...
