Development and psychometric properties of ECPICID‐AVC to measure informal caregivers’ skills when caring for older stroke survivors at home
ConclusionThe psychometric properties of the measurement tool showed acceptable results allowing its implementation in clinical practice by the nursing community staff for evaluating practical skills in informal caregivers when providing care to older stroke survivors living at home.

Swallowing Training Combined With Game-Based Biofeedback in Poststroke Dysphagia
Conclusions Laryngeal elevation training combined with game-based biofeedback augments the change in hyoid bone displacement and FOIS scores, and increases the NG tube removal rate in patients with poststroke dysphagia.

Too Early Initiation of Enteral Nutrition is Not Nutritionally Advantageous for Comatose Acute Stroke Patients.
CONCLUSION: It is nutritionally disadvantageous not to start nutritional support within 3 days after admission in comatose acute stroke patients. However, starting EN too early is not nutritionally beneficial, and TPN with 20% glucose fed through a tube is recommended as adequate nutrition for these patients. However, TPN should not be employed for longer than 10 days, because switching to EN after this period contributes to better nutritional recovery than continuing TPN. Impact of early enteral nutrition on short term prognosis after acute stroke
Publication date: Available online 14 July 2015 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience Author(s): Tianheng Zheng , Xinpu Zhu , Huazheng Liang , Haixia Huang , Jiandao Yang , Shaoshi Wang We hypothesized that early enteral nutritional support would improve the short term prognosis of acute stroke patients with dysphagia, demonstrated by lower malnutrition rates, lower complication rates, and lower National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores at 90days post stroke. Nutrition support is an essential element in the care of stroke patients and many studies have investigated the effect of specific nutritional ele...

Nasogastric feeding for stroke patients: practice and education.
CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that the management of NG feeding for dysphagic stroke patients requires standardisation, as does the education for nurses to ensure that this intervention is carried out safely, effectively and acceptably. PMID: 25815823 [PubMed - in process]

Clinical predictors of fever in stroke patients: relevance of nasogastric tube
ConclusionsIn patients with acute stroke, four clinical variables were found to be independently associated with the risk of developing fever and, of them, nasogastric tube was the strongest and most significant one.

Enteral tube feeding for dysphagic stroke patients.
Abstract Enteral feeding tubes, a nasogastric tube (NGT) or percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), are commonly used to provide nutrition, hydration and essential medications to stroke patients who cannot swallow. Early tube feeding is associated with improved survival after stroke and it is recommended that patients start tube feeding within 24 hours of hospital admission. NGT feeding is the preferred method for short-term feeding in the acute phase of stroke as it has the advantage of being easily placed at the bedside. However, there are often difficulties inserting the NGT and it can be easily dislodged by...

Safety and Effect of Metoclopramide to Prevent Pneumonia in Patients With Stroke Fed via Nasogastric Tubes Trial Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— This study suggests that metoclopramide may reduce the rate of pneumonia and may improve other clinical outcomes in patients with subacute stroke fed via nasogastric tube. These findings need to be confirmed in larger randomized and blinded trials. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: https://www.clinicaltrialsregister.eu. Dysphagia and Factors Associated with Respiratory Infections in the First Week Post Stroke
Conclusion: This study of a large cohort of acute stroke patients supports research indicating aspiration pneumonia is multifactorial in nature. NGT were associated with increased risk of respiratory infections and may contribute to infections by promoting oropharyngeal colonisation. Patients with severely impaired mobility were also at very high risk of respiratory infection.Neuroepidemiology 2014;43:140-144

Management of acid-related disorders in patients with dysphagia
Publication date: 6 September 2004 Source:The American Journal of Medicine Supplements, Volume 117, Issue 5, Supplement 1 Author(s): Colin W. Howden Dysphagia affects a large and growing number of individuals in the United States, particularly the elderly and those who are neurologically impaired. Swallowing difficulties may be due to age-related changes in oropharyngeal and esophageal functioning as well as central nervous system diseases such as stroke, Parkinson disease, and dementia. Among institutionalized individuals, dysphagia is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. An appreciation of the physiology ...

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy versus nasogastric feeding in older individuals with non-stroke dysphagia: A systematic review
Conclusion Firm conclusions could not be derived on whether PEG feeding is beneficial over NG feeding in older persons with non-stroke dysphagia, as previously published literature were unclear or had a high risk of bias. A well-designed and adequately powered RCT, which includes carer strain and quality of life as outcome measures is therefore urgently needed.

Effects of nasogastric catheterization in patients with stroke and dysphagia.
This study aimed to analyze the effects of gastric intubation in patients with stroke and dysphagia. A systematic literature review was performed in six databases, using the keywords stroke and intubation, gastrointestinal. One hundred and twenty studies were found, from which three clinical trials were selected. The results showed different outcomes, including: increased serum albumin level (gastrostomy), poor prognosis and risk of death (gastrostomy), increased treatment failures because of blocking, displacement and reinsertion need of the nasogastric tube, and increased incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding (nasogastr...
