Prevalence and Risk Factors of Carotid Artery Stenosis (CAS) Among Cardiac Surgery Patients
CONCLUSION: This study shows a high prevalence of CAS among cardiac surgery patients. In addition, older age, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension were found to be major risk factors for CAS. Gender and weight status were not associated with CAS. Preoperative carotid duplex scan is a useful exam to identify CAS among cardiac surgery patients and, therefore, to predict and reduce postoperative neurological complications.PMID:37200653 | PMC:PMC10186855 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.37634

The Great Contrast Shortage of 2022 —Lessons learnt in Australia
ConclusionOur findings demonstrate that the IBCM shortage crisis had a very significant impact on the delivery of healthcare. While V/Q scans could (partially) substitute for CTPA studies in suspected pulmonary emboli, there appeared to be no valid alternative for CTNA studies in stroke calls. The unexpected and critical shortage of IBCM forced healthcare professionals to conserve resources, prioritise indications, triage patients based on risk, explore alternate imaging strategies and prepare for similar events recurring in the future.

Dual Antiplatelet Therapy Duration After Multivessel Optimal Intravascular Ultrasound-Guided Percutaneous Coronary Intervention
CONCLUSIONS: The adoption of short DAPT duration was still low in this trial conducted after the release of the STOPDAPT-2 trial results. The 1-year incidence of cardiovascular events was not different between the shorter and longer DAPT groups, suggesting no apparent benefit of prolonged DAPT in reducing cardiovascular events even in patients who undergo multivessel PCI.PMID:37197941 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-23-0141

Association of visceral adiposity index with asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis: a population-based study in Shandong, China
CONCLUSIONS: The possible correlation between VAI and aICAS was found to be positive for the first time among Chinese rural residents over 40 years old. A higher VAI was found to be significantly associated with aICAS among the participants who were underweight or normal weight, and these results may provide additional risk stratification information for aICAS.PMID:37198613 | DOI:10.1186/s12944-023-01831-1

Associations of plaque morphology and location with Intraplaque neovascularization in the carotid artery by contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging
Conclusion: The location and morphology of carotid plaques were significantly associated with the IPN grade on CEUS, and therefore show potential as biomarkers for plaque vulnerability. Serum HDL-C was also identified as a protective factor against IPN, and may play a role in the management of carotid atherosclerosis. Our study provided a potential strategy for identification of vulnerable carotid plaques and elucidated the important imaging predictors of stroke.

Comparing ultrasonographically assessed carotid and abdominal aorta plaques in cardiovascular disease risk estimation
CONCLUSIONS: Both carotid and abdominal aorta plaques are significant risk factors for CV events, but only carotid plaques provide prognostic information beyond traditional CV risk factors on fatal CV events. If one ultrasound parameter for plaque detection and CV risk estimation had to be chosen, carotid plaques may be preferred over abdominal aorta.PMID:37161438 | DOI:10.1186/s12872-023-03264-1

Mineralizing Lenticulostriate Vasculopathy: An Emerging Risk Factor for Basal Ganglia Stroke after Minor Head Trauma in Young Children
Mineralizing lenticulostriate vasculopathy is a well-recognized risk factor for basal ganglia stroke after minor head trauma in infants and young children. It is diagnosed on head computed tomography by the presence of basal ganglia calcification, seen as punctate hyperdensities on axial and linear hyperdensities on reconstructed coronal and sagittal images. In children with anterior fontanel window, its presence is suggested by branching hyperechogenic stripes in the basal ganglia region on cranial ultrasound.

Inflammation and endothelial function ‐related gene polymorphisms are associated with carotid atherosclerosis—A study of community population in Southwest China
ConclusionThe prevalences of increased CCA-IMT and vulnerable plaque were high in Southwestern China's high-risk stroke population. Furthermore, inflammation and endothelial function-related gene polymorphisms were associated with carotid atherosclerosis.
