The estimated frequency of antiphospholipid antibodies in patients with pregnancy morbidity, stroke, myocardial infarction, and deep vein thrombosis
Conclusion: It is difficult to determine the frequency of a “clinically significant aPL profile” in patients with aPL‐related clinical outcomes due to the lack of robust data. Our best estimates of the incidence of aPL‐associated events should be confirmed with appropriately designed population studies. © 2013 American College of Rheumatology.

Neonatal Forearm Compartment Syndrome: Look for Cerebral Stroke
A male term newborn presented with a neonatal forearm compartment syndrome together with an ipsilateral cerebral stroke. Pregnancy and delivery were uneventful, except for oligohydramnios. His mother had celiac disease and hypothyroidism. Since birth, he showed a 4-cm bullous-ulcerated lesion on the left volar forearm and elbow fold (, A), with normal pulses, and an ipsilateral upper limb paresis with reduced motility, dropped wrist, no fingers extension, and grasping. Tendon reflexes were normal with Babinski sign bilaterally evident. Radiography showed a mild carpus asymmetry (left left). He had a residual scar on the fo...

Excess weight gain in the first 18 months of life is associated with later childhood overweight, obesity and greater arterial wall thickness
Commentary on: Skilton MR, Marks GB, Ayer JG, et al.. Weight gain in infancy and vascular risk factors in later childhood. Pediatrics 2013;131:e1821–8. Implications for practice and research The association between early postnatal weight gain and later childhood obesity suggests that programmes providing culturally tailored, universal, affordable or free support to families of newborns and infants are essential. Nursing care should emphasise the importance of optimal, rather than maximal, infant growth. Nursing research, in particular qualitative methods, could strengthen understanding of infant feeding practices and...

Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension and Diabetes and the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease, Stroke, and Diabetes Hospitalization in the Year Following Delivery
We examined hospital discharge diagnoses linked to birth certificate data in the year following delivery for 849,639 births during 1995–2004 in New York City, New York. Adjusted odds ratios characterized the relationship between pregnancy complications and subsequent hospitalization for cardiovascular disease, stroke, and diabetes. Gestational hypertension was related to heart failure (adjusted odds ratio = 2.6, 95% confidence interval: 1.5, 4.5). Preeclampsia was related to all of the outcomes considered except type 1 diabetes, with adjusted odds ratios ranging from 2.0 to 4.1. Gestational diabetes was strongly rela...
