Outcome after acute ischemic stroke treatment during Covid-19 outbreak in South-East Tuscany
CONCLUSION: During the lockdown period due to Covid-19 pandemic, patients with acute ischemic stroke had a worse prognosis. These findings suggest the need to improve the health system organization to guarantee an appropriate treatment during the pandemic, including the patients that are not affected by Covid-19.PMID:34579640 | DOI:10.2174/1871529X21666210927094058

Incidence, prevalence and disability associated with neurological disorders in Italy between 1990 and 2019: an analysis based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
ConclusionsThe increase in YLDs associated with neurological conditions is mostly due to population ageing and growth: nevertheless, lived disability and, as a consequence, impact on health systems has increased. Actions are needed to improve outcome and mitigate disability associated with neurological conditions, spanning among diagnosis, treatment, care pathways and workplace interventions.

Female disadvantage in risk of adverse outcomes after incident diabetic foot hospitalizations: A population cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: After incident DFD hospitalizations, females with DFD associated with amputations or with arterial disease are burdened by a greater excess risk of subsequent adverse cardiovascular events, compared with those with background DFD.PMID:34455962 | DOI:10.2174/1573399817666210827121937

Pharmacokinetics of Direct Oral Anticoagulants in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Extreme Obesity
Clin Ther. 2021 Aug 5:S0149-2918(21)00247-2. doi: 10.1016/j.clinthera.2021.07.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE: Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are recommended in preference to vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) eligible for oral anticoagulation therapy; however, data and clinical experiences supporting the use of DOACs in patients with a body mass index ≥40 kg/m2 or weight >120 kg remain limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetic properties of DOACs in patients with AF and extreme obesity.METHODS: We enrolled all consecutiv...

Molecular Analysis of Prothrombotic Gene Variants in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke and with Transient Ischemic Attack
Conclusions: the present data argue that some gene variants have a role in IS and this appears to be an interesting possibility to be pursued in large population studies to help design specific strategies for IS prevention.PMID:34357004 | PMC:PMC8306646 | DOI:10.3390/medicina57070723
