Straight from the heart: Mysterious lipids may predict cardiac problems better than cholesterol
Stephanie Blendermann, 65, had good reason to worry about heart disease. Three of her sisters died in their 40s or early 50s from heart attacks, and her father needed surgery to bypass clogged arteries. She also suffered from an autoimmune disorder that results in chronic inflammation and boosts the odds of developing cardiovascular illnesses. “I have an interesting medical chart,” says Blendermann, a real estate agent in Prior Lake, Minnesota. Yet Blendermann’s routine lab results weren’t alarming. At checkups, her low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol hovered around the 100 milligrams-per-...

The Exosomal MicroRNA Profile Is Responsible for the Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Transplantation-Induced Improvement of Functional Recovery after Stroke in Rats
Conclusion: We confirmed that MSC transplantation repaired stroke-induced functional impairments in rats by regulating various pathways associated with nervous system protection and MSC differentiation through the deregulation of exosomal miRNAs.Neuroimmunomodulation

Ephrin-B2 PB-mononuclear cells reduce early post-stroke deficit in diabetic mice but not long-term memory impairment
CONCLUSIONS: Intravenous PB-MNC+ administration the day after stroke induction in diabetic mice improved sensorimotor deficit and reduced infarct volume at the short term, but was unable to prevent long-term memory loss. To what extent diabetes impacts on cell therapy efficacy will have to be specifically investigated in the future. Including vascular risk factors systematically in preclinical studies of cell therapy will provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms potentially limiting cell efficacy and also to identify good and bad responders, particularly in the long term.PMID:34520725 | DOI:10.1016/j.expneurol.2021.113864

The ABC's of Stroke Prevention: Reduction in Stroke Frequency Following a Quality Improvement Intervention by the Action Learning Network
To assess the frequency of stroke among ventricular assist device patients following a quality improvement bundled intervention (the “ABCs of Stroke Prevention” [ABCs] which focused on Anticoagulation, Blood pressure, and Communication) within the Advanced Cardiac Therapies Improving Outcomes Network (ACTION). The bundle intervention comprised 3 interventions. These were: a document harmonizing how to implement and maintain b ivalirudin infusion, a blood pressure management protocol and a daily stroke prevention checklist.

Biventricular imaging markers to predict outcomes in non ‐compaction cardiomyopathy: a machine learning study
ConclusionsOur findings show the importance of biventricular assessment to detect the severity of this cardiomyopathy and to plan for early clinical intervention. In addition, this study shows that even patients with normal LV function and negative late gadolinium enhancement had MACE. ML is a promising tool for analysing a large set of parameters to stratify and predict prognosis in LVNC patients.

Effects of Neurotrophic Factors in Glial Cells in the Central Nervous System: Expression and Properties in Neurodegeneration and Injury
Conclusion and Future Aspects This review summarizes available NTF expression data, compiles existing evidence on the effects of glial NTF signaling in healthy conditions and in disease models (Figure 1), and highlights the importance of this topic for future studies. The relationship between NTFs and glia is crucial for both the developing and adult brain. While some of these factors, such as NT-3 and CNTF, have highly potent effects on gliogenesis, others like BDNF and GDNF, are important for glia-mediated synapse formation. Neurotrophic factors play significant roles during neurodegenerative disorders. In many cases, ...

Haploidentical bone marrow transplant with post-transplant cyclophosphamide plus thiotepa improves donor engraftment in patients with sickle cell anemia: results of an international learning collaborative
Sickle cell disease (SCD) has evolved from a life-threatening condition in early childhood, to a chronic disease in adults [1,2]. Improved supportive care [3], use of hydroxyurea therapy [4], and regular blood transfusion therapy for primary [5] and secondary [6] stroke prevention, have resulted in improved childhood clinical outcomes and survival. Approximately 99% of all children born in high resource countries with SCD are expected to live to adulthood [7,8]. The most feared complication in children with SCD is stroke [9].
