Persistent depression is a predictor of quality of life in stroke survivors: results from a 5-year follow-up study of a Chinese cohort.
CONCLUSIONS: Persistent depression at the 1-year follow-up could predicted poor MCS scores at the 5-year follow-up. The development of interventional strategies targeting post-stroke patients with persistent depression is warranted. PMID: 31436596 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Incidence of stroke and traumatic brain injury in New Zealand: contrasting the BIONIC and ARCOS-IV studies.
CONCLUSIONS: Differences in TBI and stroke incidence suggest targeting prevention very differently for the two groups. Incidence profiles suggest TBI is much more common; and a need to target males and those of Māori ethnicity for TBI prevention. PMID: 31563926 [PubMed - in process]

A Study of Clinico-radiological and Socio-demographic Profile of Patients with Stroke in a Terttary Care Hospital of South West Rajasthan.
Authors: Kaur G, Samar N, Sharma J, Pareek KK, Veerwal R, Kajla P, Raghuvendra Abstract Introduction: Cerebrovascular disorders (CVD) are increasing in prevalence and incidence in Indian population. Global burden of disease study shows that of the 9.4 million deaths in India, 619,000 were due to stroke. A matter of concern is that in the last two decades there is a significant increase in prevalence rate of stroke. Aim: To find the demographic characteristics along with clinico-radiological profile and of patients presenting with stroke in a tertiary care hospital in Rajasthan. Methodology: This cross secti...

Influence of chronic kidney disease and haemodialysis on stroke outcome
CONCLUSION: Despite significant functional and neurological improvements following rehabilitation, stroke patients with underlying CKD had higher average duration of hospital stay, more recurrent hospitalisations and poorer survival outcomes than those without underlying CKD. This could be attributed to the complications associated with CKD rather than stroke. Multidisciplinary community rehabilitation may be an alternative to reduce recurrent hospitalisations and morbidity in this group of patients. PMID: 32241068 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

miR-135b levels in the peripheral blood serve as a marker associated with acute ischemic stroke.
In conclusion, data from the present study suggest that elevated expression of miR-135b in the peripheral blood of patients with acute ischemic stroke is closely associated with disease severity. PMID: 32346417 [PubMed]

Diagnosis and Treatment for embolic stroke of undetermined source: Consensus statement from the Taiwan stroke society and Taiwan society of cardiology.
Abstract Cryptogenic stroke comprises about one-quarter of ischemic strokes with high recurrence rate; however, studies specifically investigating the features and treatment of this stroke subtype are rare. The concept of 'embolic stroke of undetermined source' (ESUS) may facilitate the development of a standardized approach to diagnose cryptogenic stroke and improve clinical trials. Since recent large randomized control trials failed to demonstrate a reduction in stroke recurrence with anticoagulants, anti-platelet agents remain the first-line treatment for ESUS patients. Nevertheless, patients with high risk of ...

Effectiveness of statins in patients with stroke due to cervical artery dissection: A preliminary study.
This study aimed to investigate the effect of statins on neurological outcomes after a stroke due to CAD. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study including consecutive patients diagnosed with a stroke due to CAD. Subjects were classified into non-statin, simvastatin 20mg, simvastatin 40mg, and high-potency statin groups. After 2 years, the functional outcome, stroke recurrence, major cardiovascular events, and mortality were assessed. RESULTS: Among the 54 patients included in our cohort, there were 16 (29.6%) patients without statins, 22 (40.7%) with simvastatin 20mg, 12 (22.2%) with simvastatin 40mg and ...

Association of RAGE with acute ischemic stroke prognosis in type 2 diabetes
ConclusionAcute ischemic stroke is associated with elevated serum RAGE level, which, at admission, is an independent predictor of poor outcome for stroke in type 2 diabetes.

Automated CT Perfusion Imaging to Aid in the Selection of Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke for Mechanical Thrombectomy: A Health Technology Assessment.
Conclusions: Automated CT perfusion imaging has an acceptable sensitivity and specificity for detecting brain areas that have been affected by stroke. In patients selected for mechanical thrombectomy using automated CT perfusion imaging, there was significant improvement in functional independence. Mechanical thrombectomy informed by automated CT perfusion imaging is likely to be cost-effective. We estimate that publicly funding automated CT perfusion imaging in Ontario would result in additional costs of $1.3 million in year 1 and $0.9 million per year thereafter. Popular knowledge of stroke in S ão Paulo: a cross-sectional study within the World Stroke Campaign
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the severity and prevalence of stroke, the population still has little information on this disease. In this context, the importance of mounting campaigns to improve prevention and treatment and to contribute to healthcare policies becomes evident.PMID:33729417 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2020.0116.R1.18112020
