A Prototype Worldwide Survey of Diagnostic and Treatment Modalities for Stroke
Stroke is a global health problem. However, very little is known about stroke care in low- to middle-income countries. Obtaining country-specific information could enable us to develop targeted programs to improve stroke care. We surveyed neurologists from 12 countries (Chile, Georgia, Nigeria, Qatar, India, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Denmark, Brazil, Belgium, and Bangladesh) using a web-based survey tool. Data were analyzed both for individual countries and by income classification (low income, lower middle income, upper middle income, and high income).

Outcome Predictors of Stroke Mortality in the Neurocritical Care Unit
Conclusions: Our analysis showed that mortality risk in critically ill patients with hemorrhagic stroke was closer to mortality risk in patients with ischemic stroke than has been reported in other analyses. Hypertension, chronic heart failure, ischemic heart disease and atrial fibrillation were the most frequent comorbidities in patients who developed severe (life-threatening) stroke. Coma and cerebral edema on admission appear to be associated with poor outcome. This is the first publication of in-hospital stroke mortality from a Central Asian population and could form the basis for future research including development ...

Epidemiology of stroke and transient ischemic attacks in the population of the territories adjacent to the former Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site, Kazakhstan
Radiat Environ Biophys. 2021 Nov 25. doi: 10.1007/s00411-021-00955-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe issue of radiation exposure as a potential cause of cerebrovascular disease raises many concerns. The aim of the present study was to investigate the epidemiology of stroke and transient ischemic attacks (TIA) along with the associated risk factors among the population of East Kazakhstan exposed to ionising radiation from the former Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site (SNTS) in comparison with the unexposed population of the same region. This 5-year retrospective cross-sectional study included the data on 10,970 patients, of...

Features of gas exchange and metabolism of the brain during revascularization of the carotid arteries
Bratisl Lek Listy. 2023 Feb 28. doi: 10.4149/BLL_2023_054. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe relevance of the stated topic of scientific research is determined by the fact that stroke is still the most important medical and social problem both in the world as a whole and in the Republic of Kazakhstan in particular due to high rates of morbidity, mortality, and disability. In addition, cerebrovascular diseases occupy one of the leading places in the structure of morbidity, disability and mortality, second only to coronary heart disease in Kazakhstan as well as around the world. The purpose of this research work is to study ...

Benefits and Limitations of Long-Term Eculizumab Treatment for Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH): Real-World Data from Large Cohort Study in Russia
Conclusions: The results of the study show both the high efficacy and limitations of treatment with eculizumab for PNH in real-world practice. Prospectively confirmed significant improvement of the overall survival on eculizumab stress the need for faster and wider access to costly therapy. Nevertherless, a number of limitations, including BTH and extravascular hemolysis, lack of control of bone marrow failure and further clonal evolution, determine the relevance of next-generation complement inhibitors and risk-adjusted allogeneic HSCT as a curative option.DisclosuresKulagin: Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc: Consultancy, Honoraria.

Sex Difference of Radiation Response in Occupational and Accidental Exposure
Conclusion and Outlook This review summarizes the data from major human studies on the health risks of radiation exposure and shows that sex can potentially influence the prolonged response to radiation exposure (Figure 1 and Tables 1, 2). These data suggest that long-term radiosensitivity in females is higher than that in males who receive a comparable dose of radiation. Our analysis of the literature agrees with the conclusions of the recent report on the Biological effects of ionizing radiation (BEIR VII) published in 2006 by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), United States (National Research Council, 2006). The B...

Case Report: First Two Identified Cases of Fabry Disease in Central Asia
Conclusion: This is the first description of cases of Fabry disease in Central Asia. An extensive family pedigree enabled the identification of ten additional family members. Patients with rare genetic diseases often experience substantial delays in diagnosis due to their rarity and non-specific symptoms, which can negatively impact their management and delay treatment. FD may be difficult to diagnose because of the non-specificity of its early and later-onset symptoms and its X-linked inheritance. Raising awareness of clinicians is important for earlier diagnosis and optimal outcome of specific therapies.
