Trajectories of memory, language, and visuoperceptual problems in people with stroke during the first year and controls in Colombia.
Conclusion: These findings suggest profound disparities in post-stroke cognitive functioning in Colombia compared to other more developed global region and underscore the importance of comprehensive cognitive rehabilitation services for individuals with stroke in Colombia and other similar global regions. Implications for rehabilitation Because this study found only negligible cognitive improvements beyond practice effects over the first year after stroke in Colombia among individuals without access to acute rehabilitation, it is imperative that comprehensive cognitive rehabilitation services be implemented immediately dur...

Comparing the Course of Mental Health over the First Year after Stroke with Healthy Controls in Colombia, South America
Conclusions This is the first study to examine the course of mental health over the first year post-stroke in Latin America, specifically in Ibague, Colombia. Despite the improvements in anxiety and depression over the first year post-stroke, patient anxiety and depression were still worse in comparison to healthy controls. The current findings indicate a need for rehabilitation services in Colombia, especially targeting mental health issues.

Translation and cultural validation of clinical observational scales - the Fugl-Meyer assessment for post stroke sensorimotor function in Colombian Spanish.
CONCLUSIONS: Use of FMA will allow unified description of stroke severity and motor recovery in Spanish speaking countries. This will open up possibility to compare stroke and rehabilitation outcomes with other countries and regions world-wide. Comprehensive methodological procedures provided can facilitate introduction of well-established clinical scales in other languages. Implications for Rehabilitation The Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) of upper and lower extremity is the most used and recommended clinical scale for evaluation of sensorimotor impairment after stroke. The Spanish version of FMA, validated in this study, is...

Intra- and inter-rater reliability of Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Upper Extremity in stroke.
CONCLUSION: The FMA-UE is reliable both within and between raters in patients with stroke in the early subacute phase. A wider international use of FMA-UE will allow comparison of stroke recovery between regions and countries and thereby potentially improve the quality of care and rehabilitation in persons with stroke worldwide. Disparities Influencing Functional Outcomes Between Rural and Urban Patients With Acute Stroke
ConclusionsRural patients treated in our center were more likely to present with severe strokes and unfavorable mRS at hospital discharge and 3-month follow-up compared to urban, despite having similar risk factors. There is an inverse relationship, which is not related to the poverty rate or the percentage of people with barriers to access to health. There is a need for further studies that assess barriers inherent in rural patients and establish a regional stroke network.

Ischemic stroke in young patients in Medell ín, Colombia
CONCLUSIONS: The high frequency of traditional risk factors in young patients highlights the need to optimize primary and secondary prevention plans. This study provides new insights about the relevance of illicit substance abuse in Colombia as a cause of stroke in young patients, unlike the previous one conducted in Bogotá. Infectious causes were other peculiarities found. It is necessary to investigate the reasons for the high proportion of undetermined causes.PMID:36138366 | DOI:10.1186/s12883-022-02895-9

Massive acute ischemic stroke after Bothrops spp. envenomation in southwestern Colombia: Case report and literature review
We present here the case of a 50-year-old male with no comorbidities referred from a rural area in southwest Colombia with a Bothrops spp. snakebite on the left hand. On admission, the patient presented with a deterioration of consciousness and required mechanical ventilation assistance. The MRI showed multiple ischemic areas in the bilateral frontaltemporal and occipital regions. Two months later, the patient had a favorable resolution, although central paresis in the III and VI cranial nerves and positive Babinski's sign persisted. As already mentioned, the pathophysiology of ischemic stroke due to snakebite is complex b...
