Chronic comorbid conditions and asthma exacerbation occurrence in a general population sample
In conclusion, several chronic comorbid conditions were associated with asthma exacerbation occurrence, which confirms but also complements previous studies. Our observations contribute to understanding exacerbation risk estimation and, ultimately, personalized asthma management.PMID:37567896 | DOI:10.1038/s41533-023-00350-x

Age-Related Differences in the Contribution of Systolic Blood Pressure and Biomarkers to Cardiovascular Disease Risk Prediction: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study
Am J Cardiol. 2023 Aug 9;204:295-301. doi: 10.1016/j.amjcard.2023.07.118. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe sought to determine how biomarkers known to be associated with hypertension-induced end-organ injury complement the use of systolic blood pressure (SBP) for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk prediction at different ages. Using data from visits 2 (1990 to 1992) and 5 (2011 to 2013) of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, 3 models were used to predict CVD (composite of coronary heart disease, stroke, and heart failure). Model A included traditional risk factors (TRFs) except SBP, model B-TRF plus SBP, a...

Higher Risk of Incident Hyperthyroidism in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation
CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide insight into clinical risk factors for the development of hyperthyroidism in AF patients, as identified by the novel SAD HEC2 score. AF appears to be a common precursor of hyperthyroidism.PMID:37565329 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad448

Pharmacological interventions for asymptomatic carotid stenosis
CONCLUSIONS: Although there is no high-certainty evidence to support pharmacological intervention, this does not mean that pharmacological treatments are ineffective in preventing ischaemic cerebral events, morbidity, and mortality. High-quality RCTs are needed to better inform the best medical treatment that may reduce the burden of carotid stenosis. In the interim, clinicians will have to use other sources of information.PMID:37565307 | PMC:PMC10401652 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD013573.pub2

Cardiovascular effects of rivaroxaban in heart failure patients with sinus rhythm and coronary disease with and without diabetes: a retrospective international cohort study from COMMANDER-HF
Conclusions In COMMANDER-HF a diagnosis of diabetes conferred higher rates of cardiovascular events that, with exception of ischaemic stroke, was not substantially reduced by rivaroxaban. Rivaroxaban was associated with reduced risk of ischaemic stroke for patients with and without diabetes. Trial registration number NCT01877915; Post-results.

COVID-19 ’ s Impact on Heart Health Still Confounds Doctors
(ST. LOUIS) — Firefighter and paramedic Mike Camilleri once had no trouble hauling heavy gear up ladders. Now battling long COVID, he gingerly steps onto a treadmill to learn how his heart handles a simple walk. “This is, like, not a tough-guy test so don’t fake it,” warned Beth Hughes, a physical therapist at Washington University in St. Louis. [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] Somehow, a mild case of COVID-19 set off a chain reaction that eventually left Camilleri with dangerous blood pressure spikes, a heartbeat that raced with slight exertion, and episodes of intense chest pain...

Analysis of the clinical features and risk factors of kidney injury in patients with chronic heart failure-a retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Kidney injury occurred in more than half of the patients with CHF during hospitalization. The independent risk factors for kidney injury in the CHF patients included sex (male), hypertension, and stroke. Kidney injury was positively correlated with age and serum potassium, and negatively correlated with serum albumin, hemoglobin concentration, LVEF, and ARB application.PMID:37559657 | PMC:PMC10407521 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1016
