Stroke-induced hexokinase 2 in circulating monocytes exacerbates vascular inflammation and atheroprogression
CONCLUSIONS: Stroke-induced monocyte Hk2 upregulation is a key mechanism underlying post-stroke vascular inflammation and atheroprogression.PMID:36893911 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtha.2023.02.021

Contemporary Antiplatelet and Anticoagulant Therapies for Secondary Stroke Prevention: A Narrative Review of Current Literature and Guidelines
Curr Neurol Neurosci Rep. 2023 Apr 11. doi: 10.1007/s11910-023-01266-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. The annual incidence of new or recurrent stroke is approximately 795,000 cases per year in the United States, of which 87% are ischemic in nature. In addition to the management of modifiable high-risk factors to reduce the risk of recurrent stroke, antithrombotic agents (antiplatelets and anticoagulants) play an important role in secondary stroke prevention. This review will discuss the published literature on the use of antiplatelets and antic...

Higher habitual dietary intakes of flavanols and anthocyanins differentially associate with lower incidence of ischemic stroke subtypes-A follow-up analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Higher habitual intakes of flavanols and anthocyanins are differentially associated with lower risk of ischemic stroke from atherosclerosis and/or cardioembolism, but not with other subtypes.PMID:37716608 | DOI:10.1016/j.tjnut.2023.09.011

The Impact of Social Determinants of Health and Lifestyle on the Association of Lipoprotein(a) with Myocardial Infarction and Stroke
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: SDOH and lifestyle factors were predictors for MI and stroke that did not impact the association between Lp(a) and cardiovascular events. Our findings support that Lp(a) is an independent risk factor for MI and possibly stroke.PMID:37693416 | PMC:PMC10491356 | DOI:10.1101/2023.09.01.23294968

Crosstalk between the Gut and Brain in Ischemic Stroke: Mechanistic Insights and Therapeutic Options
Mediators Inflamm. 2022 Oct 11;2022:6508046. doi: 10.1155/2022/6508046. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTThere has been a significant amount of interest in the past two decades in the study of the evolution of the gut microbiota, its internal and external impacts on the gut, and risk factors for cerebrovascular disorders such as cerebral ischemic stroke. The network of bidirectional communication between gut microorganisms and their host is known as the microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA). There is mounting evidence that maintaining gut microbiota homeostasis can frequently enhance the effectiveness of ischemic stroke treatment by mo...

Preclinical Evaluation of Fingolimod in Rodent Models of Stroke With Age or Atherosclerosis as Comorbidities
This study used a rigorous study design in normal male C57BL/6JOlaHsd mice and in mice with common stroke comorbidities to further evaluate the translational potential of fingolimod. Stroke was induced via middle cerebral artery electrocoagulation in 8-9-week old mice (young mice), 18 month old mice (aged mice), and in high-fat diet-fed 22-week old ApoE-/- mice (hyperlipidaemic mice). Recovery was evaluated using motor behavioural tests 3 and 7 days after stroke. Tissue damage was evaluated at 7 days. A lower dose of fingolimod, 0.5 mg/kg, but not 1 mg/kg, increased lesion size but decreased ipsilateral brain atrophy in yo...

Association between dietary antioxidant capacity and atherosclerotic carotid stenosis in patients with ischemic stroke
CONCLUSIONS: DTAC may influence the initiation and development of atherosclerosis, and, therefore, the risk of ischemic stroke.PMID:37210776 | DOI:10.1016/j.jstrokecerebrovasdis.2023.107148

Dietary Flavonoid Intake and Carotid Calcification in Patients with Ischemic Stroke
CONCLUSION: Dietary flavonoid intake is associated with carotid calcification, and, therefore, may influence the risk of stroke occurrence and recurrence.PMID:37524067 | DOI:10.1159/000532117

Posterior Circulation Ischaemic Stroke
Am J Med Sci. 2022 Jan 29:S0002-9629(22)00030-1. doi: 10.1016/j.amjms.2021.10.027. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPosterior circulation ischaemic stroke (PCIS) is a disease of high burden. They account for 20-25% of all ischaemic strokes. However, it is relatively under-researched and requires more clinical attention, since it carries worse functional outcomes. Vertigo, visual disturbances and sensory/motor disturbances are found in PCIS. Large artery atherosclerosis and embolism are main causes of PCIS, while there is growing evidence that vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia is a key association. Hypertension is the commonest r...
