Could "cellular exercise" be the missing ingredient in a healthy life? Diets, caloric restriction, and exercise-induced hormesis
Nutrition. 2022 Feb 7;99-100:111629. doi: 10.1016/j.nut.2022.111629. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOvernutrition is a poor dietary habit that has been correlated with increased health risks, especially in the developed world. This leads to an imbalance between energy storage and energy breakdown. Many biochemical processes involving hormones are involved in conveying the excess of energy into pathologic states, mainly atherosclerosis, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. Diverse modalities of regular exercise have been shown to be beneficial, to varying extents, in overcoming the overnutrition comorbidities...

Long-term secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease with a Mediterranean diet and a low-fat diet (CORDIOPREV): a randomised controlled trial
This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT00924937.FINDINGS: From Oct 1, 2009, to Feb 28, 2012, a total of 1002 patients were enrolled, 500 (49·9%) in the low-fat diet group and 502 (50·1%) in the Mediterranean diet group. The mean age was 59·5 years (SD 8·7) and 827 (82·5%) of 1002 patients were men. The primary endpoint occurred in 198 participants: 87 in the Mediterranean diet group and 111 in the low-fat group (crude rate per 1000 person-years: 28·1 [95% CI 27·9-28·3] in the Mediterranean diet group vs 37·7 [37·5-37·9] in the low-fat group, log-rank p=0·039). Multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios ...

The enigmatic role of VCAM-1 expressed by macrophages in mitochondrial metabolism and atherosclerosis
CONCLUSION: We conclude that macrophage-specific VCAM-1 augments mitochondrial biogenesis and DNA oxidation via Cmpk2. Oxidized mitochondrial DNA in plaque macrophages increases inflammation via Sting, resulting in exacerbation of atherosclerosis.PMID:35557156 | DOI:10.1096/fasebj.2022.36.S1.R6141

Tongnao Decoction (TND) Alleviated Atherosclerosis by Playing Lowering Lipid, Anti-Inflammatory, and Antioxidant Roles
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that TND significantly protected from atherosclerosis via promoting endothelial cell survival and alleviating oxidative stress and inflammatory response, which may have become a treatment in atherosclerotic diseases.PMID:35663197 | PMC:PMC9159833 | DOI:10.1155/2022/6061197

Pathological Investigations of Intracranial Atherosclerosis Using Multiple Hypercholesterolemic Rabbit Models
CONCLUSIONS: ICAS was detected in WHHL and apoE KO rabbits, and occurred in specific locations in the cerebral arteries. Hypertension promotes the development of ICAS in the setting of hypercholesterolemia.PMID:35712258 | PMC:PMC9196249 | DOI:10.3389/fendo.2022.834207

Health benefits of astaxanthin against age-related diseases of multiple organs: A comprehensive review
Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr. 2022 Jun 16:1-66. doi: 10.1080/10408398.2022.2084600. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAge-related diseases are associated with increased morbidity in the past few decades and the cost associated with the treatment of these age-related diseases exerts a substantial impact on social and health care expenditure. Anti-aging strategies aim to mitigate, delay and reverse aging-associated diseases, thereby improving quality of life and reducing the burden of age-related pathologies. The natural dietary antioxidant supplementation offers substantial pharmacological and therapeutic effects against various dise...

Nomogram and Carotid Risk Score for Predicting Moderate or High Carotid Atherosclerosis among Asymptomatic Elderly Recycling Volunteers
Diagnostics (Basel). 2022 Jun 6;12(6):1407. doi: 10.3390/diagnostics12061407.ABSTRACTCarotid atherosclerosis is associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. We explored an appropriate method for selecting participants without ischemic cerebrovascular disease but with various comorbidities eligible for a carotid ultrasound. This was a retrospective subgroup analysis of the carotid plaque burden from a previous study involving a vascular and cognitive survey of 956 elderly recycling volunteers (778 women and 178 men; mean age: 70.8 years). We used carotid ultrasound to detect the carotid plaque and computed the...

Hawthorn fruit acid consumption attenuates hyperlipidemia-associated oxidative damage in rats
CONCLUSION: HFA administration can provide health benefits by counteracting the effects of hyperlipidemia caused by an HFD in the body, and the underlying mechanism of this event is closely related to the activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway.PMID:35990322 | PMC:PMC9384962 | DOI:10.3389/fnut.2022.936229

Crosstalk between neurological, cardiovascular, and lifestyle disorders: insulin and lipoproteins in the lead role
Pharmacol Rep. 2022 Sep 23. doi: 10.1007/s43440-022-00417-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInsulin resistance and impaired lipoprotein metabolism contribute to a plethora of metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. These alterations have been extensively linked with poor lifestyle choices, such as consumption of a high-fat diet, smoking, stress, and a redundant lifestyle. Moreover, these are also known to increase the co-morbidity of diseases like Type 2 diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. Under normal physiological conditions, insulin and lipoproteins exert a neuroprotective role in the central nervous system. However, ...

Guanmaitong Granule Attenuates Atherosclerosis by Inhibiting Inflammatory Immune Response in ApoE < sup > -/- < /sup > Mice Fed High-Fat Diet
CONCLUSION: Radix notoginseng, Radix salviae liguliobae, and Radix astragali are the main ingredients of GMTG for treating AS. Further, GMTG could regulate the level of serum lipids and inhibit inflammatory immune response, which resulted in anti-AS effects such as plaque stabilization, reduction of plaque burden, and plaque remodeling. GMTG is a promising multi-target treatment for AS.PMID:36148321 | PMC:PMC9489104 | DOI:10.2147/DDDT.S372143
