Computed tomography angiography-based radiomics model for predicting carotid atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability
This study aimed to identify radiomic features associated with the neovascularization of CAP and construct a prediction model for CAP vulnerability based on radiomic features. CTA data and clinical data of patients with CAPs who underwent CTA and CEUS between January 2018 and December 2021 in Beijing Hospital were retrospectively collected. The data were divided into a training cohort and a testing cohort using a 7:3 split. According to the examination of CEUS, CAPs were dichotomized into vulnerable and stable groups. 3D Slicer software was used to delineate the region of interest in CTA images, and the Pyradiomics package...

Incidental Finding of Arteria Lusoria in COVID-19 Patient with Aortic Thrombus Complicated by Recurrent Limb Ischemia
We report the case of a 64-year-old woman with recent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pneumonia who was admitted to the hospital due to a giant floating thrombus in the ascending aorta with multiple ischemic events. Aortic computed tomography angiogram revealed an aberrant right subclavian artery associated with bicarotid trunk that might have protected carotid arteries from embol migration. Thrombosis is a rare clinical presentation in coronavirus disease 2019 infection but with serious complications that must be kept in mind to detect and avoid morbidities like ischemic stroke. Poststroke venous thromboembolism and neutrophil activation: an illustrated review
Res Pract Thromb Haemost. 2023 Apr 29;7(4):100170. doi: 10.1016/j.rpth.2023.100170. eCollection 2023 May.ABSTRACTPatients with acute ischemic stroke are at a high risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), estimated to affect approximately 80,000 patients with stroke each year in the United States. The prevalence of symptomatic DVT after acute stroke is approximately 10%. VTE is associated with increased rates of in-hospital death and disability, with higher prevalence of in-hospital complications and increased 1-year mortality in patients with stroke. Current guidelines recommend the use of ...

Short-term effects of individual exposure to PM < sub > 2.5 < /sub > on hospital admissions for myocardial infarction and stroke: a population-based case-crossover study in Guangzhou, China
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Jun 5. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-28058-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSome studies have investigated the effects of PM2.5 on cardiovascular diseases based on the population-average exposure data from several monitoring stations. No one has explored the short-term effect of PM2.5 on cardiovascular hospitalizations using individual-level exposure data. We assessed the short-term effects of individual exposure to PM2.5 on hospitalizations for myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke in Guangzhou, China, during 2014-2019. The population-based data on cardio-cerebrovascular events were provided by ...

Risks of neurological and psychiatric sequelae 2 years after hospitalisation or intensive care admission with COVID-19 compared to admissions for other causes
Brain Behav Immun. 2023 May 30:S0889-1591(23)00132-0. doi: 10.1016/j.bbi.2023.05.014. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe association between COVID-19 and subsequent neurological and psychiatric disorders is well established. However, two important questions remain unanswered. First, what are the risks in those admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) with COVID-19? Admission to ICU is itself associated with neurological and psychiatric sequelae and it is not clear whether COVID-19 further increases those risks or changes their profile. Second, what are the trajectories of neurological and psychiatric risks in patients admitted...

Effect of prior anticoagulation therapy on stroke severity and in-hospital outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke and atrial fibrillation
We aimed to assess the prevalence of prior anticoagulation therapy (warfarin or non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants [NOACs]) among patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and atrial fibrillation (AF) in China and investigate the associations between prior anticoagulation therapy and initial stroke severity and in-hospital outcomes.

How do we ensure that more patients receive stroke thrombectomy in the UK?
Br J Hosp Med (Lond). 2023 May 2;84(5):1-4. doi: 10.12968/hmed.2023.0111. Epub 2023 May 22.ABSTRACTStroke is a major cause of death in the UK. Mechanical thrombectomy is the most effective treatment for large vessel ischaemic strokes. Despite this, very few patients in the UK receive mechanical thrombectomy. This editorial explores the main barriers to mechanical thrombectomy use and mechanisms to improve uptake.PMID:37235673 | DOI:10.12968/hmed.2023.0111
