Household Secondhand Smoke Exposure Confers Higher Stroke Risk and Poorer Stroke Prognosis (S42.005)
CONCLUSIONS: Household SHS is associated with a 1.5-fold increase in stroke risk and a 2-fold increase in mortality after stroke among never-smokers. While prospective studies are needed to assess causality, this study highlights the importance of obtaining SHS exposure history and counseling patients and their families on the potential impact of SHS on post-stroke outcomes.Disclosure: Dr. Lin has nothing to disclose. Neighborhood socioeconomic index and stroke incidence in a national cohort of blacks and whites
Conclusions: Risk of incident stroke increased with decreasing nSES but the effect of nSES is attenuated through individual SES and stroke risk factors. The effect of neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics that contribute to increased stroke risk is similar in black and white participants.

Ischemic stroke subtypes and migraine with visual aura in the ARIC study
Conclusion: In participants with migraine with visual aura in late middle age, increased risk of cardioembolic stroke was observed. Migraine with visual aura was linked to increased stroke risk, while migraine without visual aura was not, over the period of 20 years. These results are specific to older migraineurs.

Risk of fractures after stroke: Results from the Ontario Stroke Registry
Conclusions: Stroke is associated with an increased risk of low-trauma fractures. Individuals with stroke and additional risk factors for fractures may benefit from targeted screening for low bone mineral density and initiation of treatment for fracture prevention.

Orosomucoid-1 Protein Dynamics Following Ischemic Stroke in Humans and Mice (P1.265)
Conclusions:ORM-1 is a sexually dimorphic protein involved in the early (<24 hour) response to ischemic stroke. This research demonstrates that sex differences exist in post-stroke ORM-1 protein dynamics, and serves as an initial step in determining the mechanism of ORM-1 in the ischemic stroke response and its potential as a future therapeutic target for both sexes.Study Supported by:NIH Grant 5 R01 NS055215 09, and Hartford Hospital, Hartford, CT.Additional thanks to Sharon DiMauro, Lori Capozzi, and to the Scientific Research Committee at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.Disclosure: Dr. Mistry has not...

Analysis of Diagnostic Accuracy, Workflow and Time to Treatment during In-house 'Stroke Codes (P4.282)
Conclusions:Only a minority of ‘stroke codes’ were activated for new ischemic stroke/TIA or large vessel occlusion, while the remaining codes were for altered mental status, seizure, or non-neurologic etiologies. A notable delay occurred between time of code call and imaging. Improved identification of focal symptoms and use of parallel processing for evaluation will be studied in a prospective analysis in effort to improve patient identification and response times.Disclosure: Dr. Manners has nothing to disclose. Dysphagia after stroke: State of the science and environmental survey of a comprehensive stroke center (P5.293)
Conclusions:Discussion:Despite evidence that placement of PEG tube worsens functional outcome after stroke, over one quarter of all admitted stroke patients in our study received PEG based on formalized assessment. It is unclear if the duration of PEG tube use post discharge and delay in PEG tube placement would have assisted the patient to avoid this procedure. Conclusions:A large percentage of stroke patients receive PEG tube during hospitalization. Future research will formally assess the trajectory of swallow recovery in the hyperacute phase of care in order to identify a subpopulation of stroke patients with rapid reco...

Feasibility of Integrating Post Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Assessments in Stroke Clinic (P5.295)
Conclusions:Significant post stroke fatigue, depression and rehabilitative challenges are prevalent, even in patients with mild stroke. Total small vessel disease score and risk of recurrent stroke: Validation in 2 large cohorts
Conclusions: The total SVD score has predictive value for recurrent stroke after TIA/ischemic stroke. Prediction of recurrence in patients with nonlacunar events highlights the potential role of SVD in wider stroke etiology.

Hydration Practices for the Acute Stroke Patient in an Academic, Certified Stroke Center (P3.125)
Conclusions: Although dehydration is common in the acute stroke population, initiation of fluid supplementation is delayed and many patients spend time without fluids. This provides a foundation for a system improvement project targeting time to fluid administration as well as the development of a fluid resuscitation algorithm for future prospective trials as we attempt to improve clinical outcome.Disclosure: Dr. Bahouth has nothing to disclose.
