Urine toxicology screening in an urban stroke and TIA population
Conclusions: In this study, patients with stroke and TIA who were young and black were more likely to have urine toxicology screening. Eleven percent of all tested patients (and 9% of patients 50 years or older) were positive for cocaine. To avoid disparities, we suggest that all stroke and TIA patients be tested.

JURaSSiC: Accuracy of clinician vs risk score prediction of ischemic stroke outcomes
Conclusions: Clinicians with expertise in stroke performed poorly compared to a validated tool in predicting the outcomes of patients with an acute ischemic stroke. Use of the risk stroke outcome tool may be superior for decision-making following an acute ischemic stroke.

Association of atrial fibrillation with mortality and disability after ischemic stroke
Conclusions: Older age and increased stroke severity explain most of the association between AF and poorer outcomes after acute ischemic stroke. Nonuse of oral anticoagulant therapy represents the most important modifiable care gap to mitigate the association between AF and poor outcomes after ischemic stroke.

Quality of life after TIA and stroke: Ten-year results of the Oxford Vascular Study
Conclusion: Quality-adjusted survival is low over the 5 years after stroke and TIA, with severity and recurrent stroke being major predictors. There remains considerable scope for improvements in acute treatment and secondary prevention to improve the quality of life after TIA and stroke.

Long-term survival after ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation
Conclusions: Ischemic stroke approximately triples the mortality rate in patients with atrial fibrillation. This effect persists well beyond the immediate period poststroke and is strongly associated with disability after stroke. Stroke prevention by anticoagulation has even greater beneficial effects on survival than usually considered when focusing solely on 30-day mortality rates.

The Western States Stroke Consortium Telestroke Project (P7.120)
This study of telestroke utilizes four networks within the Western States Stroke Consortium (WSSC), encompassing rural and underserved areas in four states. Objectives:The objectives are to determine whether telemedicine consultations for stroke patients will improve care per guidelines compared to stroke patients treated at control hospitals and to determine whether the care provided via telemedicine consultations will be similar to care per guidelines provided to stroke patients treated at hub hospitals.Design:Prospective observational study recruiting from four networks with a 500 subject goal. Subjects with stroke onset...

Prehospital stroke scales in urban environments: A systematic review
Conclusions: Prehospital stroke scales varied in their accuracy and missed up to 30% of acute strokes in the field. Inconsistencies in performance may be due to sample size disparity, variability in stroke scale training, and divergent provider educational standards. Although LAPSS performed more consistently, visual comparison of graphical analysis revealed that LAPSS and CPSS had similar diagnostic capabilities.

Aspirin for secondary prevention after stroke of unknown etiology in resource-limited settings
Conclusions: The concern that the risks of aspirin in patients with stroke of unknown etiology could outweigh the benefits is not supported by our model, which predicts that aspirin for secondary prevention in patients with stroke of undetermined etiology in resource-limited settings could lead to decreased stroke-related mortality and stroke recurrence.

Deaths from stroke in US young adults, 1989-2009
Conclusions: Although hospitalizations for stroke in young patients have been increasing, the apparent decrease in mortality rates and in racial disparities suggests that recognition and treatment in this group may be improving.

Interactive Voice Response_A Novel Approach to Post-Stroke Depression Monitoring (P7.130)
Conclusions: Stroke patients with depressive symptoms were able and willing to engage in IVR symptom monitoring and the burden on the health team was minimal. Future studies are needed to understand why subjects dropped out of the intervention and to explore the efficacy of this approach.Disclosure: Dr. Rusche-Skolarus has nothing to disclose. Infection, vaccination, and childhood arterial ischemic stroke
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel to the brain is either blocked or ruptured. When blood to part of the brain is blocked, it causes what is called an ischemic stroke. Stroke is much more common in adults and the elderly. This is because fats and cholesterol can build up and block blood vessels as we age. Stroke is much less common in children. Stroke occurs in 11 per 100,000 children under the age of 18 every year.1 Still, it is one of the top 10 causes of death for children.2 We don't routinely expect children to have the major risk factors for atherosclerosis, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, an...

Risk of stroke in retinal vein occlusion
Conclusions: The present study provides new evidence that patients with incident RVO are at increased risk of stroke just after RVO occurrence. Immediate risk evaluation and proper treatment of stroke risk factors in patients with RVO are needed to reduce stroke-related mortality and morbidity.

Antecedent Aspirin Use Is Associated with Less Severe Symptoms on Admission for Ischemic Stroke (P1.184)
Conclusions: Antecedent aspirin use was independently associated with milder AIS severity on presentation, even after accounting for acute infarct volume. While the underlying biology of this apparently protective relationship requires further study, patients at high risk of stroke may benefit from routine aspirin use.Disclosure: Dr. Nelson has nothing to disclose. Physical Consequences of Depression Predominate in the Early Post Stroke Period (P1.220)
Conclusions: Physical features of depression show up within the first few weeks after a stroke. There may be an interaction between the syndrome of post stroke fatigue and PSD. Recognition and treatment of these physical features could potentially improve the results of rehabilitation from stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Bhattacharya has nothing to disclose.
