Medication Self-Administration after Stroke (P5.181)
Conclusion: Stroke patients performed poorly on the HMS, and though performance improved after medication education, this may be related to spontaneous stroke recovery. MSA problems, assessed by HMS performance, may strongly predict post-acute care needs. Funded by: NJ Brain Injury Commission and Kessler FoundationDisclosure: Dr. Oyawusi has nothing to disclose. Clinical profile, risk factors, etiology and outcome of stroke in young Filipino adults. (P7.147)
Conclusion - Stroke occurs at a younger age in Filipinos compared to other Asian and European countries. The incidence of stroke in young Filipinos were similar to Asian figures but higher compared to European studies. Hypertension is the most common risk factor in the world followed by diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia. In Filipinos however, cultural vices such as smoking and alcoholism were the second and third leading risk factors. This paper to the best of our knowledge is the first to report the unique profile of stroke in young Filipino patients.Disclosure: Dr. Talamera has nothing to disclose. Dr. San Jose has noth...

Suicide after stroke
In their article "Poststroke suicide attempts and completed suicides: A socioeconomic and nationwide perspective,"1 Dr. Eriksson and colleagues focused on suicide after a serious brain injury (stroke). The authors work at Umea University in Sweden and the study was supported by the Swedish Council for Health and the Swedish Research Council. The study followed more than 220,000 people for 12 years after their stroke. Within this group, the authors counted the number of people who were admitted to a hospital for a suicide attempt and the number of people who died due to suicide. They found that younger less-educated men who...

Potential new uses of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants to treat and prevent stroke
Conclusion: There may be a role for NOACs in stroke prevention and treatment beyond atrial fibrillation. Randomized controlled trials are needed to compare NOACs to current stroke prevention and treatment strategies in certain subgroups of patients with cerebrovascular disease.

Arterial ischemic stroke in children with cardiac disease
Conclusions: Infants with cyanotic CHD were most frequently affected by AIS during the periprocedural period. Prospective cohort studies are required to determine effective primary and secondary prevention strategies.

The merging burden of HIV infection and stroke in the developing world
According to the WHO, at the end of 2014, the majority of the approximately 36.9 million people living with HIV/AIDS resided in low- to middle-income countries in sub-Saharan Africa.1 The same report indicated that cases in sub-Saharan Africa account for almost 70% of the global total of new HIV infections.1 The burden of stroke in developing countries parallels that of HIV/AIDS. Approximately 80% of people who have had a stroke live in low- to middle-income nations.2 Over the past 4 decades, stroke incidence in these countries has increased by more than 100%.3 In developing nations, HIV/AIDS and stroke are not mutually ex...

Statin therapy in acute ischemic stroke: Time for large randomized trials?
Despite improvements in stroke mortality coupled with therapeutic advances, stroke patients often face the prospect of substantial disability. Novel strategies are clearly needed to further improve stroke outcomes. These might include new indications for previously licensed drugs proven effective and safe in related disease processes,1 such as statins. Unlike strong evidence supporting statin use in cardiovascular risk reduction and acute myocardial ischemia, their effects on cerebral tissue and potential benefits on stroke outcomes remain poorly understood and understudied. The only current stroke-specific indication for ...

Association of Hemoglobin A1c and Baseline Ischemic Stroke Severity: A Population-Based Study (P1.187)
Conclusions: We found that elevated HbA1c was associated with decreased stroke severity at presentation. However, this effect is mediated by the history of DM rather than a specific dose-effect of glycemic control. Our results provide evidence that although chronic hyperglycemia increases risk of stroke, it is not associated with increased stroke severity.Disclosure: Dr. Yang has nothing to disclose. Palliative Care Consultation Did Not Reduce Length of Stay in a Comprehensive Stroke Center (P1.212)
Conclusion: Palliative care consultation for patients with ischemic or hemorrhagic strokes was not associated with decreased hospital costs or LoS. This is in contrast to previously reported studies. We will further analyze the effect of early palliative care on a larger sample size to validate the findings. We also propose that a standardized palliative care trigger tool be implemented for early PC consultation in patients with debilitating stroke, advanced age, and multiple comorbid conditions.Disclosure: Dr. Tversky has nothing to disclose. Delays in the Emergency Department, Medical Complications of Stroke and Predictors of Clinical Outcomes: The McGill Experience (P2.310)
Conclusions: This preliminary analysis of our cohort reveals that there is a significant delay in the admission of patients from the ED to the stroke unit, and that this delay is not in keeping with current Canadian Stroke Best Practice guidelines. Medical complications were prevalent, and pneumonia, brain edema and sepsis during admission were associated with worse clinical outcomes. Further work will explore the correlation between delays in ED, medical complications and clinical outcomes. Conclusions:Disclosure: Dr. Chen has nothing to disclose. Does Transferring Patients to Stroke Centers Increase Length of Stay (P2.313)
Conclusions: There was no difference in LOS or any clinical outcomes between the ED and transferred patients. Additionally, transferred patients did not receive more advanced procedures such as intra-arterial therapy or hemicraniectomy. Further studies exploring non-tPA patients and transient ischemic attack patients would be informative, as well as non-home, discharge location relative to the patient’s residence.Disclosure: Dr. Cossey has nothing to disclose. Practice advisory: Recurrent stroke with patent foramen ovale (update of practice parameter): Report of the Guideline Development, Dissemination, and Implementation Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology
Conclusions: Percutaneous PFO closure with the STARFlex device possibly does not provide a benefit in preventing stroke vs medical therapy alone (risk difference [RD] 0.13%, 95% confidence interval [CI] –2.2% to 2.0%). Percutaneous PFO closure with the AMPLATZER PFO Occluder possibly decreases the risk of recurrent stroke (RD –1.68%, 95% CI –3.18% to –0.19%), possibly increases the risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) (RD 1.64%, 95% CI 0.07%–3.2%), and is highly likely to be associated with a procedural complication risk of 3.4% (95% CI 2.3%–5%). There is insufficient evidence to d...
