Evidence based effects of yoga in neurological disorders
Publication date: Available online 7 June 2017 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience Author(s): A. Mooventhan, L. Nivethitha Though yoga is one of the widely used mind-body medicine for health promotion, disease prevention and as a possible treatment modality for neurological disorders, there is a lack of evidence-based review. Hence, we performed a comprehensive search in the PubMed/Medline electronic database to review relevant articles in English, using keywords “yoga and neurological disorder, yoga and multiple sclerosis, yoga and stroke, yoga and epilepsy, yoga and Parkinson's disease, yoga and dementia, yoga and...

Changing paradigm in the management of elderly patients with intracranial aneurysms: An institutional review
Publication date: Available online 7 June 2017 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience Author(s): Oleg Y. Chernyshev, Shyamal C. Bir, Tanmoy K. Maiti, Devi Prasad Patra, Cesar Liendo, Hugo Cuellar, Alireza Minagar, Anil Nanda Optimal treatment of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) in elderly patients has not yet been well established. We have investigated the clinical and radiological outcomes and predictors of unfavorable outcome of IAs in elderly patients. Radiological and clinical data of 85 elderly patients from 2010 through 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. Significant differences between the groups were determined by a ...

Clinical effects of air pollution on the central nervous system; a review
Publication date: Available online 18 May 2017 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience Author(s): Robin M. Babadjouni, Drew M. Hodis, Ryan Radwanski, Ramon Durazo, Arati Patel, Qinghai Liu, William J. Mack The purpose of this review is to describe recent clinical and epidemiological studies examining the adverse effects of urban air pollution on the central nervous system (CNS). Air pollution and particulate matter (PM) are associated with neuroinflammation and reactive oxygen species (ROS). These processes affect multiple CNS pathways. The conceptual framework of this review focuses on adverse effects of air pollution wi...

Chronic kidney disease is independently associated with acute recurrent cerebral infarct in patients with atrial fibrillation
Conclusions We found that RCI frequently develops about 5days after admission in patients with AIS and AF and that chronic kidney disease is independently associated with RCI.

Clinical predictors for favorable outcomes from endovascular recanalization in wake-up stroke
Conclusions The results of this study suggest that the SRDT is an independent predictor of both an improvement of NIHSS score and a good functional outcome in endovascular recanalization for WUS patients.

Evaluation of the role of susceptibility-weighted imaging in thrombolytic therapy for acute ischemic stroke
Publication date: Available online 20 February 2017 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience Author(s): Guangjian Zhao, Ling Sun, Ziran Wang, Liquan Wang, Zhongrong Cheng, Hongyan Lei, Daiqun Yang, Yansen Cui, Shirui Zhang We inspected low-intensity venous signals and microbleeds in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) using susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) before and after administration of within-thrombolytic-time-window thrombolytic therapies, and observed their prognosis and safety, in order to guide individualized thrombolytic therapies. Patients with AIS were divided into groups A or B according to the pres...

Pharmacologic cardioversion with intravenous amiodarone is likely safe in neurocritically Ill patients
Publication date: Available online 13 February 2017 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience Author(s): Michael Su, David Seki, Asma M. Moheet Neurological injury is often associated with cardiac abnormalities, including electrophysiological issues. Cardioversion of acute atrial fibrillation (<48h’ duration) without anticoagulation carries about a 0.7% risk of thromboembolism. There is limited data on managing acute atrial fibrillation specifically in the neuroscience intensive care unit (NSICU) setting. We sought to determine the safety of using intravenous (IV) amiodarone for restoring sinus rhythm in patients w...

Is carpal tunnel syndrome present in acute stroke patients? An investigative study using clinical and imaging screening tools
Publication date: Available online 10 February 2017 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience Author(s): Chen Lin, Aaron I. Loochtan, Brian Dresser, Jianhong Chang, Alfredo E. Farjat, Kingshuk Choudhury, Lisa D. Hobson-Webb Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is known to develop post-stroke. Median nerve ultrasound (US) is an inexpensive, effective means of screening. In this prospective feasibility study, we compared the ability of the physical exam, the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ) and median nerve US to screen for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) within 72hours of stroke onset. We enrolled 24 consecutive patients. Usin...

Global aphasia without hemiparesis may be caused by blunt head trauma: An adolescent boy with transient aphasia
We report a 15-year old boy with transient global aphasia without hemiparesis due to blunt head trauma. In our case, clinical findings occurred 1week later following head trauma. Emergence of the symptoms after a period of the first mechanical head trauma, draws attention to the importance of secondary process in traumatic brain injury.
