Aortic valve calcification and risk of stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Publication date: Available online 21 July 2018Source: Journal of Clinical NeuroscienceAuthor(s): Danfeng Zhang, Xianliang Dai, Chaoqun Wang, Kaiwei Han, Junyu Wang, Yan Dong, Jigang Chen, Lijun HouAbstractAortic valve calcification (AVC) is common among aged population and reported to be associated with the risk of stroke. However, the conclusions are inconsistent among studies. We performed a rigorous meta-analysis to unravel the AVC-stroke relationship. Embase, PubMed and Cochrane library were retrieved for related cohort studies investigating the correlations between AVC and risk of stroke. The language was limited to ...

Endothelial progenitor cells improve functional recovery in focal cerebral ischemia of rat by promoting angiogenesis via VEGF
Publication date: Available online 21 July 2018Source: Journal of Clinical NeuroscienceAuthor(s): Zhaohong Kong, Yan Hong, Jiang Zhu, Xin Cheng, Yumin LiuAbstractTo investigate the role of venous infusion of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in the reendothelialization of acute focal cerebral ischemia model in rats. And explore the mechanism of VEGF to promote angiogenesis of functional recovery in focal cerebral ischemia of rat. A model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) was used to mimic ischemia following EPCs extraction from the same donor rats. EPCs were characterized by CD34, CD45 and CD133 expressions, and...

Ischaemic stroke may symptomatically manifest as migraine aura
Publication date: Available online 19 July 2018Source: Journal of Clinical NeuroscienceAuthor(s): Michael J. Waters, Edmund Cheong, Jim Jannes, Timothy KleinigAbstractMigraine aura is a common stroke mimic. We hypothesised that some patients with typical migraine aura symptoms might have embolic stroke detected as the precipitant. We identified fourteen patients who presented with symptoms consistent with a clinical diagnosis of migraine aura, but demonstrated subsequent evidence of acute infarction on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In all patients, migraine aura symptoms were not directly attributable to the vascular l...

Moyamoya vasculopathy with anti-SCL-70 antibodies: A case report and review of the literature
We describe a patient with an ischemic stroke and angiographic findings of moyamoya in the setting of positive antinuclear antibodies and anti-Scl-70 antibodies with clinical features of scleroderma on exam. A review of current literature identified three similar cases where immunosuppression in addition to secondary stroke prevention led to reduced frequency of neurological sequelae. These cases plus our own demonstrate that patients with moyamoya vasculopathy in association with anti-Scl 70 antibodies exist on a spectrum with either predominant scleroderma features or neurological symptoms. There are a limited number of ...

Survival after in-hospital cardiac arrest among cerebrovascular disease patients
Publication date: August 2018Source: Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, Volume 54Author(s): Corey R. Fehnel, Alissa Trepman, Dale Steele, Muhib A. Khan, Brian Silver, Susan L. MitchellAbstractStroke is a leading cause of death and disability, and while preferences for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are frequently discussed, there is limited evidence detailing outcomes after CPR among acute cerebrovascular neurology (inclusive of stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)) patients. Systematic review and meta-analysis of PubMed and Cochrane libraries from January 1990 to December 2016 was conducted among stroke patients unde...

Metastatic prostate cancer mimicking a subdural hematoma: A case report and literature review
Publication date: Available online 4 July 2018Source: Journal of Clinical NeuroscienceAuthor(s): Andrew Nunno, Mahlon D. Johnson, Guan Wu, Yan Michael LiAbstractOccurrences of metastatic prostate cancer imitating a subdural hematoma are limited to a small number of case reports, even though prostate cancer spreads to the dura more than other types of cancer. Here, we present the case of a 64 year-old male whose prostate carcinoma’s metastasis mimicked a subdural hematoma, and he suffered a middle cerebral artery stroke. Prostate cancer’s high rate of progression to the dura is disproportionate to its relatively low r...

Genetic diagnosis of CADASIL in three Hong Kong Chinese patients: A novel mutation within the intracellular domain of NOTCH3
We report here the clinical and molecular findings of three unrelated Hong Kong Chinese families with CADASIL syndrome. Sanger sequencing of genomic DNA revealed a novel heterozygous variant NM_000435.2(NOTCH3):c.[5903_5904insATAA];[5903_5904=] NP_000426.2:p.(Asp1969∗);(Asp1969=) and two previously reported heterozygous mutations NM_000435.2(NOTCH3):c.[328C>T];[328C=] NP_000426.2:p.[(Arg110Cys)];[(Arg110=)] and NM_000435.2(NOTCH3):c.[580T>A];[580T=] NP_000426.2:p.(Cys194Ser);(Cys194=) in the three families respectively. Molecular basis of CADASIL in these three patients were further established. Genetic analysis provides...

Acute ischemic dissection of an “S”-shaped carotid artery: The “one-stop” value of using a detachable Solitaire AB stent
This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of endovascular repair using detachable Solitaire AB stents for acute ischemic dissection of “S”-shaped carotid arteries. From May 2015 to December 2016, a total of 127 patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) underwent endovascular treatment in our center. Among them, five AISs were due to acute dissection of an “S”-shaped carotid artery. Coexisting carotid embolism was identified in all five patients, who first underwent successful Solitaire AB stent-based retrieval of the embolism. All patients then underwent Solitaire AB stenting to reopen the occluded carot...

Han, Olivia Sobczyk, James Duffin, Danny M. Mandell, Michael Tymianski, Joseph A. Fisher, David J.
