Alterations of functional connectivity in auditory and sensorimotor neural networks: A case report in a patient with cortical deafness after bilateral putaminal hemorrhagic stroke
Rationale: Cortical deafness is a rare auditory dysfunction caused by damage to brain auditory networks. The aim was to report alterations of functional connectivity in intrinsic auditory, motor, and sensory networks in a cortical deafness patient. Patient concerns: A 41-year-old woman suffered a right putaminal hemorrhage. Eight years earlier, she had suffered a left putaminal hemorrhage and had minimal sequelae. She had quadriparesis, imbalance, hypoesthesia, and complete hearing loss. Diagnoses: She was diagnosed with cortical deafness. After 6 months, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imagin...

Graded motor imagery training as a home exercise program for upper limb motor function in patients with chronic stroke: A randomized controlled trial
Purpose: Although several types of occupational therapy for motor recovery of the upper limb in patients with chronic stroke have been investigated, most treatments are performed in a hospital or clinic setting. We investigated the effect of graded motor imagery (GMI) training, as a home exercise program, on upper limb motor recovery and activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with stroke. Methods: This prospective randomized controlled trial recruited 42 subjects with chronic stroke. The intervention group received instruction regarding the GMI program and performed it at home over 8 weeks (30 minutes ...

Effect of thrombolysis in a mobile stroke unit versus in hospital for patients with ischemic stroke: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Introduction: Ischemic stroke caused by arterial occlusion is the cause of most strokes. The focus of treatment is rapid reperfusion through intravenous thrombolysis and intravascular thrombectomy. Two acute stroke management including prehospital thrombolysis and in hospital have been widely used clinically to treat ischemic stroke with satisfied efficacy. However, there is no systematic review comparing the effectiveness of these 2 therapies. The aim of this study is to compare the effect of prehospital thrombolysis versus in hospital for patients with ischemic stroke. Methods and analysis: The following elect...

Nationwide temporal trend analysis of reperfusion therapy utilization and mortality in acute ischemic stroke patients in Japan
This study aimed to elucidate nationwide trends in reperfusion therapy utilization and subsequent 30-day mortality in acute ischemic stroke patients in Japan. The analysis focused on intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (IV rt-PA) and endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). Using health insurance claims data, we calculated the age- and sex-adjusted monthly number of acute ischemic stroke patients who received IV rt-PA and/or EVT in Japan from April 2010 to March 2016, and investigated the 30-day all-cause mortality rates after undergoing these therapies. Through an interrupted time-series analysis, we examined ...

Therapeutic effect of Chinese herbal medicines for post-stroke depression: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of combination of CHM with routine western medicines versus routine western medicines alone in patients with post-stroke depression (PSD). Methods: Electronic databases such as PubMed, EmBase, Cochrane library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were systematically searched from inception till October 2019. Studies designed as randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and that investigated the therapeutic effects of CHM plus routine western medicines (CHM group) versus routine western medicines alone (control group) in PSD patients were eligible. The relative ris...

Anesthetic considerations in hyperparathyroid crisis: A case report
Introduction: Hyperparathyroid crisis is a rare and potentially life-threatening complication of severe calcium intoxication. Parathyroidectomy is the only curative method for hyperparathyroid crisis. Several case reports and case series have been published on the medical and surgical treatments for hyperparathyroid crisis, however, few reports have focused on the associated perioperative anesthetic management. Patient concerns: A 48-year-old Chinese woman presented with a 2-week history of nausea and vomiting and complained of mental status alteration including confusion and agitation in the 24 hours prior to...

A preliminary study of cortical morphology changes in acute brainstem ischemic stroke patients
The study aimed to explore the cortical thickness and gyrification abnormalities in acute brainstem ischemic patients in both the ipsilateral and contralateral hemisphere compared with healthy controls. Structural magnetic resonance imaging data were prospectively acquired in 48 acute brainstem ischemic patients, 21 patients with left lesion and 27 with right lesion, respectively. Thirty healthy controls were recruited. Cortical morphometry based on surface-based data analysis driven by CAT12 toolbox implemented in SPM12 was used to compare changes in cortical thickness and gyrification. Significant decreases of cortical t...

Significant reduction in the visits to the emergency room department during the COVID-19 pandemic in a tertiary hospital in Greece: Indirect victims of the pandemic?
COVID-19 pandemic caused a major crisis, affecting and straining health care systems, including some very advanced ones. The pandemic may have also indirectly affected access to health care for patients with other conditions, not related to COVID-19, even in countries not overwhelmed by an outbreak. We analyzed and compared visits to the emergency room (ER) department during the same calendar period of 2019 and 2020 (from March 1 to March 31 of each year) in our hospital, a medium size, tertiary center, located in the center of Athens, which is not a referral center for COVID-19. Total ER visits were reduced by 42.3%...

Comorbidities associated with different levels of total cholesterol in male and female acute ischemic stroke patients
This study recruited AIS patients between January 2000 and June 2016 classified into normal, borderline or high total cholesterol (TC). Normal was defined as ≤200 mg/dl, borderline 200 to 239 mg/dl and high ≥240 mg/dl based on Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) Guidelines for the classification of TC levels. The logistic regression model was used to predict clinical risk factors associated within men and women AIS patients with different levels of TC. A total of 3532 AIS patients presented with normal TC, 760 patients with borderline TC and 427 patients with high TC. The high total cholesterol group was more lik...
