Data-independent acquisition-based quantitative proteomic analysis of m.3243A>G MELAS reveals novel potential pathogenesis and therapeutic targets
The pathogenesis of mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke like episodes (MELAS) syndrome has not been fully elucidated. The m.3243A > G mutation which is responsible for 80% MELAS patients affects proteins with undetermined functions. Therefore, we performed quantitative proteomic analysis on skeletal muscle specimens from MELAS patients. We recruited 10 patients with definitive MELAS and 10 age- and gender- matched controls. Proteomic analysis based on nanospray liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was performed using data-independent acquisition (DIA) method and differentially ...

Development of a values-based decision aid to determine discharge destination: Case reports of older stroke survivors and their families
Conclusion: Older stroke patients can use the DA to think through the evidence-based information matching their own values to make a more satisfactory decision. The effectiveness of this DA should further be investigated in clinical settings.

A meta-analysis of intravenous thrombolysis versus bridging therapy for ischemic stroke
Conclusions: This study confirms that IVMT is more effective and safe than IVT alone in patients with AIS. However, more and higher-quality randomized clinical trials comparing IVMT to IV alone are warranted for validation.

Alzheimer’s disease related single nucleotide polymorphisms and correlation with intracerebral hemorrhage incidence
We examined whether published AD risk single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and haplotypes were associated with ICH utilizing genome-wide association study data from 2 independent studies (genetic and environmental risk factors for hemorrhagic stroke [GERFHS] study and genetics of cerebral hemorrhage with anticoagulation [GOCHA]). Analyses included evaluation by location of ICH. GERFHS and GOCHA cohorts contained 745 ICH cases and 536 controls for analysis. The strongest association was on 1q32 near Complement receptor type 1 (CR1), where rs6701713 was associated with all ICH (P = .0074, odds ratio [OR] = 2.07) an...

Serum neurofilament light chain levels are correlated with the infarct volume in patients with acute ischemic stroke
Neurofilament light chains (NfLs) are promising biomarkers of neuroaxonal damage in stroke patients. We investigated the correlations between NfL levels and infarct volume, initial stroke severity, and functional outcomes at discharge in patients with acute ischemic stroke.

Avellis syndrome with ipsilateral prosopalgia, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, and central post-stroke pain: A case report and literature review
We reported a case of Avellis syndrome who manifested as the typical reported manifestations. The patient, what’s more, presented with ipsilateral trigeminal, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, and central poststroke pain which were described for the first time. It is of great significance for clinicians to recognize the typical as well as other manifestations which helps to make a clear diagnosis.

The efficacy of transitional care services in patients with transient ischemic attack: A retrospective cohort study
Transient ischemic attack (TIA) carries a particularly high short-term risk of stroke, which is associated with brain dysfunction caused by a regional reduction in blood flow. Transitional care services present benefits in improving ischemic neurological function and decreasing the recurrence in patients with TIA. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of transitional care on clinical outcomes in patients hospitalized for TIA. We retrospectively collected data about 1288 patients with TIA from May 2017 to June 2019. Patients were divided into mild (n = 438), moderate (n = 420) and severe group (nâ...

Relationship between MTHFR C677T, homocysteine, and ischemic stroke in a large sample of the Han Chinese population
Ischemic stroke, one of the prevalent causes of death and disability worldwide, is linked to environmental and genetic factors, including polymorphisms in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene involved in homocysteine metabolism. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between the MTHFR C677T variant, plasma homocysteine, and risk of developing large-artery atherosclerotic ischemic stroke (LAAIS) among Han Chinese.

Blood pressure variability related to early outcome of acute ischemia stroke in a prospective observational study
In conclusion, the present study suggests that high BPV is a risk factor for poor early prognosis in acute ischemic stroke.

Effect of compressive therapy on sensorimotor function of the more affected upper extremity in chronic stroke patients: A randomized clinical trial
Conclusion: Upper extremity motor and passive somatosensory stimulation techniques are effective in improving sensorimotor function of the more affected UE, but none of them had the advantage over the other, in terms of improving motor and sensory function in chronic stroke patients.

The age factor influencing long-term physical functionality in stroke patients undergoing intra-arterial thrombectomy treatment
The treatment of acute ischemic stroke is heavily time-dependent, and even though, with the most efficient treatment, the long-term functional outcome is still highly variable. In this current study, the authors selected acute ischemic stroke patients who were qualified for intravenous thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator and followed by intra-arterial thrombectomy. With primary outcome defined by the functional level in a 1-year follow-up, we hypothesize that patients with older age are at a disadvantage in post-stroke recovery. However, an age-threshold should be determined to help clinicians in sel...
