Variants in genes related to inflammation and endothelial function can increase the risk for carotid atherosclerosis in southwestern China
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis was observed to be extremely high in the high-risk stroke population in southwestern China. There were associations observed between the specific variants in inflammation and endothelial function relevant genes and carotid atherosclerosis. The high-risk interactive genotypes among IL1A rs1609682, ITGA2 rs1991013, and HABP2 rs7923349 significantly increased the risk of carotid atherosclerosis. These results are expected to provide novel strategies for the prevention of carotid atherosclerosis. The gene-gene interactive analysis used in this study may be very helpful to e...

Doppler flow morphology characteristics of epiaortic arteries in aortic valve pathologies: a retrospective study on a cohort of patients with ischemic stroke
ConclusionsWell defined, qualitative Doppler flow characteristics detectable in the CCA and ICA are highly predictive for aortic valve disease. The consideration of these flow characteristics can be useful to streamline diagnostic and therapeutic measures, especially in the outpatient setting.

Associations of plaque morphology and location with Intraplaque neovascularization in the carotid artery by contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging
CONCLUSION: The location and morphology of carotid plaques were significantly associated with the IPN grade on CEUS, and therefore show potential as biomarkers for plaque vulnerability. Serum HDL-C was also identified as a protective factor against IPN, and may play a role in the management of carotid atherosclerosis. Our study provided a potential strategy for identification of vulnerable carotid plaques and elucidated the important imaging predictors of stroke.PMID:37251224 | PMC:PMC10213664 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2023.1097070

Society for Vascular Surgery duplex ultrasound surveillance guidelines are safe and cost effective for transcarotid artery revascularization
The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness and cost effectiveness of post-TCAR CDUS surveillance regimens in monitoring for in-stent restenosis (ISR) and associated stroke risk at a single-center community institution.

Ultrasound brain pulses put mice in a hibernation-like state
It’s a classic science fiction trope: Astronauts on an interstellar journey are kept in sleek, refrigerated pods in a state of suspended animation. Although such pods remain purely fictional, scientists have pursued research into inducing a hibernation-like state in humans to lessen the damage caused by medical conditions such as heart attacks and stroke, and to reduce the stress and costs of future long-distance space sojourns. In a study published today in Nature Metabolism , scientists report that they can trigger a similar state in mice by targeting part of their brain with pulses of ultrasound ...

Risk Factors of Asymptomatic Carotid Artery Disease in Geriatric Evaluated Using Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (IMT) Measurement, the First Indonesian Population Study
Int J Angiol. 2022 Jun 28;32(2):95-99. doi: 10.1055/s-0042-1750040. eCollection 2023 Jun.ABSTRACTCarotid artery disease in geriatric is one of the important etiologies of stroke, which topped the cause of mortality in Indonesia. Specific prevention should be done as early as asymptomatic disease occurred. Initial assessment can be performed using ultrasound by measuring the intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid artery, which can evaluate earlier progression of the atherosclerosis process. Unfortunately, we do not have risk factors categorization that show us which geriatric population fall under high-risk stratification ...

Subclinical Vascular Composites Predict Clinical Cardiovascular Disease, Stroke, and Dementia: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)
CONCLUSIONS: Subclinical vascular composites of arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis may be useful biomarkers to inform the vascular pathways contributing to events of CVD, CHD, stroke, and dementia.PMID:37205504 | PMC:PMC10187443 | DOI:10.1101/2023.05.01.23289364

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Carotid Artery Stenosis (CAS) Among Cardiac Surgery Patients
CONCLUSION: This study shows a high prevalence of CAS among cardiac surgery patients. In addition, older age, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension were found to be major risk factors for CAS. Gender and weight status were not associated with CAS. Preoperative carotid duplex scan is a useful exam to identify CAS among cardiac surgery patients and, therefore, to predict and reduce postoperative neurological complications.PMID:37200653 | PMC:PMC10186855 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.37634

The Great Contrast Shortage of 2022 —Lessons learnt in Australia
ConclusionOur findings demonstrate that the IBCM shortage crisis had a very significant impact on the delivery of healthcare. While V/Q scans could (partially) substitute for CTPA studies in suspected pulmonary emboli, there appeared to be no valid alternative for CTNA studies in stroke calls. The unexpected and critical shortage of IBCM forced healthcare professionals to conserve resources, prioritise indications, triage patients based on risk, explore alternate imaging strategies and prepare for similar events recurring in the future.

Dual Antiplatelet Therapy Duration After Multivessel Optimal Intravascular Ultrasound-Guided Percutaneous Coronary Intervention
CONCLUSIONS: The adoption of short DAPT duration was still low in this trial conducted after the release of the STOPDAPT-2 trial results. The 1-year incidence of cardiovascular events was not different between the shorter and longer DAPT groups, suggesting no apparent benefit of prolonged DAPT in reducing cardiovascular events even in patients who undergo multivessel PCI.PMID:37197941 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-23-0141
