How AI Is Changing Medical Imaging to Improve Patient Care
That doctors can peer into the human body without making a single incision once seemed like a miraculous concept. But medical imaging in radiology has come a long way, and the latest artificial intelligence (AI)-driven techniques are going much further: exploiting the massive computing abilities of AI and machine learning to mine body scans for differences that even the human eye can miss. Imaging in medicine now involves sophisticated ways of analyzing every data point to distinguish disease from health and signal from noise. If the first few decades of radiology were about refining the resolution of the pictures taken of...

Physical therapy interventions for the correction of equinus foot deformity in post-stroke patients with triceps spasticity: A scoping review
ConclusionsThis scoping review summarized available primary literature based on PT treatments for the correction of EFD. By highlighting the remaining gaps in knowledge, it provides a reference for future studies on this pathology. Further investigations are necessary to pinpoint the best dosage and delivery methods. Future studies should investigate whether early rehabilitation programs started during the acute phase might help prevent or limit the development of secondary deformities.

Non-traditional lipid parameters as potential predictors of carotid plaque vulnerability and stenosis in patients with acute ischemic stroke
CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence that non-traditional lipid parameters (LP-C, non-HDL-C/HDL-C, non-HDL-C, CRI-I, and CRI-II) were potential predictors of carotid plaque vulnerability in patients with AIS. However, no significant correlation was observed between TG/HDL-C and AIP. RLP-C, non-HDL-C/HDL-C, non-HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, CRI-I, CRI-II, and AIP were closely related to the degree of carotid plaque stenosis. Non-traditional lipid parameters can be used as novel biomarkers of carotid plaque vulnerability and stenosis.PMID:36301362 | DOI:10.1007/s10072-022-06472-3

Attention-Based UNet Deep Learning Model for Plaque Segmentation in Carotid Ultrasound for Stroke Risk Stratification: An Artificial Intelligence Paradigm
This study proposes an attention-channel-based UNet deep learning (DL) model that identifies the carotid plaques in the internal carotid artery (ICA) and common carotid artery (CCA) images. Our experiments consist of 970 ICA images from the UK, 379 CCA images from diabetic Japanese patients, and 300 CCA images from post-menopausal women from Hong Kong. We combined both CCA images to form an integrated database of 679 images. A rotation transformation technique was applied to 679 CCA images, doubling the database for the experiments. The cross-validation K5 (80% training: 20% testing) protocol was applied for accuracy deter...

A narrative review on the application of high-intensity focused ultrasound for the treatment of occlusive and thrombotic arterial disease
CONCLUSIONS: In current preclinical and clinical data, the safety and efficacy of HIFU shows great promise in the treatment of atherosclerotic arterial disease. Future focused studies are warranted to guide the refinement of HIFU settings for more widespread adoption of this technology.PMID:36276806 | PMC:PMC9579503 | DOI:10.1016/j.jvssci.2022.08.001

Exploratory study to assess feasibility of intracerebral hemorrhage detection by point of care cranial ultrasound
ConclusionsOur exploratory analysis yielded preliminary data on use of point of care cranial ultrasound for ICH diagnosis to inform imaging techniques, cranial topography on B mode and sample size estimation for future studies to evaluate sensitivity and specificity of cranial POCUS in adult patients. This pilot study is limited by small sample size and over representation of ICH in the study. Cranial POCUS is feasible using POCUS machines and may have potential as a screening tool if validated in adequately powered studies.

Applicability and efficacy of ultrasound elastography in neurosurgery: a systematic review of the literature
CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review showed that, despite the lack of strong evidences, USE is a valid intraoperative tool, especially in oncological neurosurgery.PMID:36239425 | DOI:10.23736/S0390-5616.22.05866-0

In vitro study about prevention of vascular reocclusion by low intensity ultrasonic irradiation
Drug Discov Ther. 2022 Oct 9. doi: 10.5582/ddt.2022.01064. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFor the treatment of acute ischemic stroke, the current standard of care is thrombolysis by the administration of intravenous (IV) recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (rt-PA). Although this approach is proven to be effective, reocclusion within 24 hours occurs in about 20% of patients who receive recanalization by rt-PA. In addition, the administration of anticoagulants within 24 hours after IV rt-PA increases the risk of intracranial hemorrhage; therefore, treatment with anticoagulants is contraindicated in this population. ...
